The passion over perpetua: a new approach to the Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis

    Get PDF
Although the Passio Santarum Perpetuae et Felicitatis has received much scholarly attention in the past twenty years, it has been used primarily as a source of information on the martyr Perpetua. Other aspects of the account, such as its Montanist theology and its unique portrayal of women have been largely ignored by scholars interested in tearing it apart for relavent information on Perpetua. The Passio contains three distinct portions, each produced by a member from the religious community of Carthage in the early third-century C.E. It therefore serves as a unique historical window into early Christian North Africa, displaying a community in many ways theologically distinct from its most well known member, the apologist Tertullian. The author of the narrative portion of the account as well as the self-written account of the martyr Saturus have been marginalized due to the enormous stature of Perpetua, the first female martyr to write an account of her own persecution. In many cases, these two male figures are ignored due to a perceived relationship with Tertullian, who is looked upon with derision for his patriarchal attitudes toward women and their role in religious life. It is the purpose of this thesis to demonstrate that the Passio promotes a view of Christianity that is distinct from the one espoused by Tertullian’s writing. It will also show that the Passio presents a consistent set of theological themes in all three of its parts and offers a more progressive understanding of women as they function in the church than the one offered by Tertullian

Analyzing User Comments On YouTube Coding Tutorial Videos

Video coding tutorials enable expert and novice programmers to visually observe real developers write, debug, and execute code. Previous research in this domain has focused on helping programmers find relevant content in coding tutorial videos as well as understanding the motivation and needs of content creators. In this thesis, we focus on the link connecting programmers creating coding videos with their audience. More specifically, we analyze user comments on YouTube coding tutorial videos. Our main objective is to help content creators to effectively understand the needs and concerns of their viewers, thus respond faster to these concerns and deliver higher-quality content. A dataset of 6000 comments sampled from 12 YouTube coding videos is used to conduct our analysis. Important user questions and concerns are then automatically classified and summarized. The results show that Support Vector Machines can detect useful viewers\u27 comments on coding videos with an average accuracy of 77%. The results also show that SumBasic, an extractive frequency-based summarization technique with redundancy control, can sufficiently capture the main concerns present in viewers\u27 comments

Evaluating the Impacts of Metals on Aquatic Birds in Lake Chapala, and the Use of Stable Isotopes for Predicting the Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken Diet

The largest tropical lake in Mexico, Lake Chapala, is a major fishery and a recipient of many contaminants (industrial and agricultural) via the Lerma River. The objectives were to evaluate concentrations of mercury (Hg), aluminum (Al), barium (Ba), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), strontium (Sr), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn) in fish and wildlife of Lake Chapala. I also used stable isotopes carbon (δ¹³C) and nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) to determine trophic differences between the 3 collected fish species. I collected water, sediment, fish, and feather samples and measured these samples for Hg and other metals. Mercury concentrations in water were higher compared to other lakes around the world, but not as high as those determined from the Jose Antonio Alzate reservoir in Mexico. Sediment Hg concentrations were similar to those reported by other studies from Lake Chapala. Also, the Hg concentrations measured in fish were similar to those from other studies. Feather samples collected had a wide range of δD values; therefore using these values were not useful for predicting significant relationships between areas of feather growth and areas of Hg acquisition. Concentrations of other metals in water, sediments, and fish were also similar to those reported in previous studies. An Attwater’s prairie-chicken (APC) study was conducted to determine the diet of wild APC populations once released from captivity with the use of stable isotope analysis of δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N. I also compared historic and contemporary APC feather δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values to one another. I collected vegetation, insect, fecal, and blood samples from APCs on the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge (APCNWR). The stable isotope analysis revealed the mixing model produces different results dependent on the number of diet sources used. When analyzing δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N from blood, the main diet source is C₃ vegetation (forbs) when 3, 4, and 5 diet sources are used. Historic feather’s δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values showed that spiders (3 and 4 diet sources) and rice (5 diet sources) contributed the most to APC diet. Contemporary feather δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values determined insects (3 sources), forbs (3 sources), and C₄ vegetation (grasses; 5 sources) contributed the most

Synthesis and Characterization of Linear and Star -Branched Poly(gamma-Stearyl-L-Glutamate).

The synthesis and characterization of linear and star branched poly(γ\gamma-stearyl-L-glutamate) (PSLG) is reported. A new synthesis for N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) monomers was developed by employing bis(trichloromethyl)carbonate (triphosgene) to functionalize the corresponding α\alpha-amino acid. Multi-functional primary amino initiators (central units) were synthesized to enable the production of three, four, six and nine arm star polymers by reaction of the central units with the desired NCA. Linear PSLG was produced by either sodium methoxide initiation or benzyl amine initiation of γ\gamma-stearyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxyanhydride (SLGNCA). The highest molecular weight polymers were produced from methoxide initiation. Other molecular weights can be produced from the same ratio of methoxide to monomer by varying the initial concentration of the monomer in the reaction. The polymers were characterized by \sp1H and \sp{13}C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), dynamic and static laser light scattering (DLS and SLS), and to a lesser extent by light microscopy. Also, molecular models of both the linear and the star polymers were produced using SYBYL. DSC analysis reveals two endothermic transitions; the lower temperature transition corresponding to the melting of the side chains and the second transition corresponding to a liquid crystalline phase transition of the melted polymer. SLS yielded weight average molecular weight, radius of gyration, and 2nd virial coefficient. From these data and corresponding DLS measurements, other PSLG dimensions were calculated such as the diameter, the hydrodynamic radius, and the length. A Mark-Houwink plot was constructed from the linear PSLG data. The lower functionality PSLG star polymers exhibit negative values for the 2nd virial coefficient when measured in tetrahydrofuran (THF) which is indicative of aggregation. DLS supported this interpretation of the virial coefficient. DSC thermograms also indicate a phase transition at about 68\sp\circC for the high molecular weight stars. GPC analysis of linear PSLG yielded a GPC calibration curve as well an indication of their polydispersity
