    Reduced C*-algebra of the p-adic group GL(n) II

    Let G be the p-adic group GL(n). Using C*-algebra techniques, we obtain a very explicit description of the tempered dual of G in terms of Bernstein parameters and extended quotients. We also prove that Plancherel measure (on the tempered dual of a reductive p-adic group) is rotation-invariant.Comment: 15 page

    Superselection in the presence of constraints

    For systems which contain both superselection structure and constraints, we study compatibility between constraining and superselection. Specifically, we start with a generalisation of Doplicher-Roberts superselection theory to the case of nontrivial centre, and a set of Dirac quantum constraints and find conditions under which the superselection structures will survive constraining in some form. This involves an analysis of the restriction and factorisation of superselection structures. We develop an example for this theory, modelled on interacting QED.Comment: Latex, 38 page

    By exploiting the relation between Fredholm modules and the Segal-Shale-Stinespring version of canonical quantization, and taking as starting point the first-quantized fields described by Connes' axioms for noncommutative spin geometries, a Hamiltonian framework for fermion quantum fields over noncommutative manifolds is introduced.     Quantizing the damped harmonic oscillator

    We consider the Fermi quantization of the classical damped harmonic oscillator (dho). In past work on the subject, authors double the phase space of the dho in order to close the system at each moment in time. For an infinite-dimensional phase space, this method requires one to construct a representation of the CAR algebra for each time. We show that unitary dilation of the contraction semigroup governing the dynamics of the system is a logical extension of the doubling procedure, and it allows one to avoid the mathematical difficulties encountered with the previous method.Comment: 4 pages, no figure

    Information-theoretic principle entails orthomodularity of a lattice

    Quantum logical axiomatic systems for quantum theory usually include a postulate that a lattice under consideration is orthomodular. We propose a derivation of orthomodularity from an information-theoretic axiom.     A Rigorous Geometric Derivation of the Chiral Anomaly in Curved Backgrounds

    We discuss the chiral anomaly for a Weyl field in a curved background and show that a novel index theorem for the Lorentzian Dirac operator can be applied to describe the gravitational chiral anomaly. A formula for the total charge generated by the gravitational and gauge field background is derived directly in Lorentzian signature and in a mathematically rigorous manner. It contains a term identical to the integrand in the Atiyah–Singer index theorem and another term involving the η -invariant of the Cauchy hypersurfaces
