Role of tectonic stress in seepage evolution along the gas hydrate‐charged Vestnesa Ridge, Fram Strait
Methane expulsion from the world ocean floor is a broadly observed phenomenon known to be episodic. Yet the processes that modulate seepage remain elusive. In the Arctic offshore west Svalbard, for instance, seepage at 200–400 m water depth may be explained by ocean temperature‐controlled gas hydrate instabilities at the shelf break, but additional processes are required to explain seepage in permanently cold waters at depths \u3e1000 m. We discuss the influence of tectonic stress on seepage evolution along the ~100 km long hydrate‐bearing Vestnesa Ridge in Fram Strait. High‐resolution P‐Cable 3‐D seismic data revealed fine‐scale (\u3e10 m width) near‐vertical faults and fractures controlling seepage distribution. Gas chimneys record multiple seepage events coinciding with glacial intensification and active faulting. The faults document the influence of nearby tectonic stress fields in seepage evolution along this deepwater gas hydrate system for at least the last ~2.7 Ma
GPU-friendly neural networks for remote sensing scene classification
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have proven to be very efficient for the analysis of remote sensing (RS) images. Due to the inherent complexity of extracting features from these images, along with the increasing amount of data to be processed (and the diversity of applications), there is a clear tendency to develop and employ increasingly deep and complex CNNs. In this regard, graphics processing units (GPUs) are frequently used to optimize their execution, both for the training and inference stages, optimizing the performance of neural models through their many-core architecture. Hence, the efficient use of the GPU resources should be at the core of optimizations. This letter analyzes the possibilities of using a new family of CNNs, denoted as TResNets, to provide an efficient solution to the RS scene classification problem. Moreover, the considered models have been combined with mixed precision to enhance their training performance. Our experimental results, conducted over three publicly available RS data sets, show that the proposed networks achieve better accuracy and more efficient use of GPU resources than other state-of-the-art networks. Impact of Temperature, Ethanol and Cell Wall Material Composition on Cell Wall-Anthocyanin Interactions.
The effects of temperature and ethanol concentration on the kinetics of anthocyanin adsorption and desorption interactions with five cell wall materials (CWM) of different composition were investigated. Using temperatures of 15 °C and 30 °C and model wine with ethanol concentrations of 0% and 15% (v/v) over 120 min, the adsorption and desorption rates of five anthocyanin-glucosides were recorded in triplicate. Small-scale experiments were conducted using a benchtop incubator to mimic a single berry fermentation. Results indicate that more than 90% of the adsorption occurs within the first 60 min of the addition of anthocyanins to CWM. However, desorption appears to occur much faster, with maximum desorption being reached after 30 min. The extent of both adsorption and desorption was clearly dependent not only on temperature and ethanol concentration but also on the CWM composition
HelpWave: an integrated web centred system
In developed societies populations are aging. Facing the global slump states are reducing expenses bringing crisis to health care systems. Solutions to decrease costs are needed.
Within ICT, smartphones’ features can help provide personalised health and care services that meet individual needs. There is a huge rise of applications that effectively help people but they act independently, each one for a certain purpose.
In this paper we propose the HelpWave system, a cloud-centred architecture information system that integrates data from the users’ smartphones APPs. Conceived as a social care network its aim is to reinforce connection between caregivers and carereceiver as for instance, older people

Towards a computational- and algorithmic-level account of concept blending using analogies and amalgams
Concept blending–a cognitive process which allows for the combination of certain elements (and their relations) from originally distinct conceptual spaces into a new unified space combining these previously separate elements, and enables reasoning and inference over the combination–is taken as a key element of creative thought and combinatorial creativity. In this article, we summarise our work towards the development of a computational-level and algorithmic-level account of concept blending, combining approaches from computational analogy-making and case-based reasoning (CBR). We present the theoretical background, as well as an algorithmic proposal integrating higher-order anti-unification matching and generalisation from analogy with amalgams from CBR. The feasibility of the approach is then exemplified in two case studies
