    VGOS VLBI Intensives between MACGO12M and WETTZ13S for the rapid determination of UT1-UTC

    In this work, we present a status update and results of the designated research and development VLBI Intensive program VGOS-INT-S, observed between MACGO12M and WETTZ13S for the rapid determination of the Earth's phase of rotation, expressed via UT1-UTC. The main novelty of these sessions is the use of a special observation strategy, rapidly alternating between high- and low-elevation scans, enabling an improved determination of delays caused by the neutral atmosphere. Since 2021, 25 Intensive sessions have been observed successfully. In early 2022, VGOS-INT-S was among the most accurate Intensive programs with an average formal error σUT1−UTC\sigma_{UT1-UTC} of 3.1 μ\mus and a bias w.r.t. IERS C04 of 1.1 μ\mus.     The impact of preoperative patient characteristics on health states after total hip replacement and related satisfaction thresholds: a cohort study

    Background: The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of preoperative patient characteristics on health outcomes 6 months after total hip replacement (THR), to support patient's decision making in daily practice with predicted health states and satisfaction thresholds. By giving incremental effects for different patient subgroups, we support comparative effectiveness research (CER) on osteoarthritis interventions. Methods: In 2012, 321 patients participated in health state evaluation before and 6 months after THR. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was measured with the EQ-5D questionnaire. Hip-specific pain, function, and mobility were measured with the WOMAC in a prospective observation of a cohort. The predictive capability of preoperative patient characteristics - classified according to socio-demographic factors, medical factors, and health state variables - for changes in health outcomes is tested by correlation analysis and multivariate linear regressions. Related satisfaction thresholds were calculated with the patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) concept. Results: The mean WOMAC and EQ-5D scores before operation were 52 and 60 respectively (0 worst, 100 best). At the 6-month follow-up, scores improved by 35 and 19 units. On average, patients reported satisfaction with the operation if postoperative (change) WOMAC scores were higher than 85 (32) and postoperative (change) EQ-5D scores were higher than 79 (14). Conclusions: Changes in WOMAC and EQ-5D scores can mainly be explained by preoperative scores. The lower the preoperative WOMAC or EQ-5D scores, the higher the change in the scores. Very good or very poor preoperative scores lower the probability of patient satisfaction with THR. Shared decision making using a personalized risk assessment approach provides predicted health states and satisfaction thresholds

    Effects of Hydrographic Variability on the Spatial, Seasonal and Diel Diving Patterns of Southern Elephant Seals in the Eastern Weddell Sea

    Weddell Sea hydrography and circulation is driven by influx of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) at its eastern margin. Entrainment and upwelling of this high-nutrient, oxygen-depleted water mass within the Weddell Gyre also supports the mesopelagic ecosystem within the gyre and the rich benthic community along the Antarctic shelf. We used Conductivity-Temperature-Depth Satellite Relay Data Loggers (CTD-SRDLs) to examine the importance of hydrographic variability, ice cover and season on the movements and diving behavior of southern elephant seals in the eastern Weddell Sea region during their overwinter feeding trips from Bouvetøya. We developed a model describing diving depth as a function of local time of day to account for diel variation in diving behavior. Seals feeding in pelagic ice-free waters during the summer months displayed clear diel variation, with daytime dives reaching 500-1500 m and night-time targeting of the subsurface temperature and salinity maxima characteristic of CDW around 150–300 meters. This pattern was especially clear in the Weddell Cold and Warm Regimes within the gyre, occurred in the ACC, but was absent at the Dronning Maud Land shelf region where seals fed benthically. Diel variation was almost absent in pelagic feeding areas covered by winter sea ice, where seals targeted deep layers around 500–700 meters. Thus, elephant seals appear to switch between feeding strategies when moving between oceanic regimes or in response to seasonal environmental conditions. While they are on the shelf, they exploit the locally-rich benthic ecosystem, while diel patterns in pelagic waters in summer are probably a response to strong vertical migration patterns within the copepod-based pelagic food web. Behavioral flexibility that permits such switching between different feeding strategies may have important consequences regarding the potential for southern elephant seals to adapt to variability or systematic changes in their environment resulting from climate change

    An exploratory policy analysis of electric vehicle sales competition and sensitivity to infrastructure in Europe

    This research contributes to discussions about policy interventions to stimulate the transition of vehicle technology. Concentrating on passenger cars, an extensive system dynamics based market agent model of powertrain technology transitions within the EU up to 2050 is employed. With a focus on subsidy scenarios for both infrastructure deployment and vehicle purchase, and set within the context of the EU fleet emission regulations, we find that there are important interactions between different powertrain types and with infrastructure provision. For example, strong plug-in electric vehicle (PiEV) policy could inhibit the maturity of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Infrastructure provision is important for improving the utility of a PiEV, but we find that in the early market it may have a weaker correlation with uptake than other policy options, until the PiEV stock share is over around 5%. Furthermore, an attempt to install a ratio of much more than one charge point per 10 PiEV may lead to little gains and high costs. PiEV sales are relatively insensitive at target levels over 25 PiEV per charge point. The results of our study can help policymakers to find the right balance and timing of measures targeting the transition towards low carbon alternative vehicles

    Improved VLBI scheduling through evolutionary strategies

    Since mid-2020, various Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observation programs organized by the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS) are scheduled using a new algorithm inspired by evolutionary processes based on selection, crossover and mutation. It mimics the biological concept "survival of the fittest" to iteratively explore the scheduling parameter space looking for the best solution. In this work, we will present the general workflow of the algorithm as well as discuss its strengths and potential weaknesses. Moreover, we will highlight how the improved scheduling affects the precision of geodetic parameters. In the case of difficult-to-schedule OHG sessions, an improvement in the precision of the geodetic parameters of up to 15% could be identified based on Monte-Carlo simulations, as well as an increase in the number of observations of up to 10% compared to classical scheduling approaches
