The impacts of uncertainty shocks on the Global Financial Cycle: a multiperspective SVAR analysis

openThis thesis aims to investigate the role of global uncertainty shocks in affecting the Global Financial Cycle (GFC). Three kinds of uncertainty are considered: financial uncertainty, the uncertainty surrounding economic policies and the geopolitical uncertainty. The contribution and the impact of each uncertainty shock is assessed through a SVAR analysis, that employs multiple sets of identification strategies and estimation techniques. Specifically, the uncertainty shocks are identified alternatively with the Cholesky decomposition technique and with the Penalty Function Approach, whereas the VAR models are estimated by means of OLS and Bayesian estimations. We find that the three uncertainty measures have heterogenous effects on the GFC, which are substantially negative and depend on the underlying econometric specification. However, financial uncertainty, as measured by the Global Financial Uncertainty indicator, proves to be the most important driver of GFC, since its shock explains the highest percentage of variance of GFC and triggers the most relevant reaction in GFC in every econometric specification. This thesis aims to investigate the role of global uncertainty shocks in affecting the Global Financial Cycle (GFC). BACKGROUND: This study describes the in-service training experience of perioperative nurses from the SickKids-Ethiopia Paediatrics Perioperative Nursing Training Program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The study emphasizes specifically how nurses applied the knowledge and skills gained from the Paediatrics Perioperative Nursing Training program in their subsequent practice and consider the situational factors that facilitated or hindered implementing these new knowledge and skills.METHODS: The first author led qualitative in-depth interviews with nine perioperative nurses who participated in training in September 2016, and systematically developed descriptive codes and themes to analyze the data.RESULTS: The authors found that participants experienced improved knowledge, skills, confidence, and job retention related to perioperative nursing practice after participating in Paediatrics Perioperative Nursing Training. Participants also stressed key challenges including lack of access to ongoing perioperative inservice training and problematic staffing policies that impact perioperative nurses’ ability to fully utilize and share new knowledge gained during CPD training.CONCLUSION: The findings highlighted the value of specialized perioperative CPD training for Ethiopian nurses, yet also pointed to multidimensional challenges for knowledge translation and sustainability of best practices. The authors offer recommendations for individual and institutional strategies to address some of them

Social Housing in the European Union

The following article summarizes the findings of the report «2012 Housing Europe Review» (Pittini and Laino, 2011), published by the European Social Housing Observatory – the research department of the international not for profit organisation CECODHAS Housing Europe. This Review focuses on social housing in the European Union and aims at providing a clearer picture of the way social housing systems are structured across the EU, while identifying the main recent developments in the sector. In this article we attempt a brief analysis of the social housing sector from different perspectives: the diversity of definitions at the national level and common characteristics across Europe, the size of the sector, which kind of actors are involved in social housing provision, who can benefit from a social dwelling in the different national contexts, how the sector is financed and what are the most significant trends and challenges

The origin of the 90 degree magneto-optical Kerr rotation in CeSb

We calculate the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation for CeSb in the near-infrared spectral range. Using an exact formula for large Kerr rotation angles and a simplified electronic structure of CeSb we find at \hbar \omega = 0.46 eV a Kerr rotation of 90 degree which then for decreasing \omega jumps to -90 degree as recently observed. We identify the general origin of possible 180 degree polarization rotations as resulting from mainly nonmagnetic optical properties, in particular from the ratio of the dominant interband resonance frequency to the plasma frequency. The dependence of the Kerr rotation on moments and magnetization is discussed.Comment: 6 pages, REVTEX, 5 eps figure
