    Chapter Experience, sensorial skills and personality qualifying a wine consumer as an expert

    This paper analyses the characteristics of wine consumers that may qualify them as wine experts. The wine evaluation expertise of consumers, as measured by various degrees of self-perceived ability, is hypothesised to causally depend on cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics of wine experience, on sensorial skills relevant for wine assessment and on wine consumption-related personality aspects. Our work consisted in measuring and analysing the relationships between the self-assessment of the ability to wine assessment given by a convenience sample of consumers and the qualification of their consumption experience and training (ranging from “simple” consumer to producer/seller to professional sommeliers), their sensorial (olfactory, flavour) skills and enogastronomic culture. Wine culture is defined as the capacity to harmonise wine and food and conceive wine as a nutritional, social and health-related means. The analysed data refer to a tasting experiment held as a social activity during a scientific meeting in Pescara, Italy, in 2018. The sample of wine assessors who filled in the evaluation questionnaire included both meeting participants and people belonging to AIS-Abruzzo, the regional association of chartered sommeliers. The data collected at wine tasters showed that there were strong relationships between the self-evaluation as wine expert and the consumption experience, the assessment skills, and the wine consumption “culture”. The relationships differed according to age, activity and length of wine consumption experience of the assessors

    Chapter Wine preferences based on intrinsic attributes: A tasting experiment in Alto Adige/Südtirol province

    Different methods have been developed by researchers in modelling wine consumers purchase behaviour. The quality of a food product is described by a set of characteristics ascribable to the intrinsic and extrinsic product attributes (Olson and Jacoby, 1972). Price, brand, region of origin, grapes and gained awards are the key extrinsic attributes and physical characteristics of the wine such as taste and flavour are intrinsic attributes. This paper addresses the problem of measuring the intrinsic attributes that characterise the wine, based on specific characteristics and the impact on consumers in terms of preferences. To this end, a fractional factorial experiment held on a selection of white wines of the Alto Adige/Südtirol province in Italy. The sensorial experiment involved a voluntary sample of 33 mild wine consumers and concerned 6 grape varieties typical of that territory. For each variety, two producing cellars were selected for a total of 12 evaluated wines. The experiment followed a double-blind administration procedure to the sample and a paper questionnaire was used to elicit the consumers’ opinions on the tasted wines. The results show that intrinsic attributes, such as taste-olfactory intensity, harmony and olfactory complexity, are the drivers used in combination by consumers to rank wines in order of preference

    The psychometric assessment of offenders with an intellectual disability

    Two psychometric assessments, developed for use with mainstream offenders of normal intelligence, measuring impulsivity and locus of control respectively, were adapted for use with offenders with an intellectual disability (ID). The language and sentence structures used were simplified, and the content of questions was changed to provide contexts that were familiar to detained offenders with ID. Data generated from the responses of 47 male offenders with ID indicated that both tools demonstrated good levels of reliability, in terms of internal consistency, test re-test reliability and correlations with other tools measuring related concepts . Both instruments were found not to differentiate detained offenders with ID (n=47) from two control groups of non-offenders with ID (n=2x46). In addition, an examination of the utility of the impulsivity tool in predicting institutional aggression using receiver operator characteristics, was examined. Two risk assessments, the PCL-R (Hare, 2003) and the HCR-20 (Webster, Douglas, Eaves & Hart, 1997), were also included in this study. The results indicated that the impulsivity measure did not predict institutional aggression. However, the HCR-20 and its sub-scales and the PCL-R and its factors both provided moderate and strong predictive ability, particularly in relation to physical aggression.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    The emergency and delay management in total talus extrusion: Case report and review of literature after 24 months of follow up

    Abstract Total talus extrusion is a rare and severe injury. It is burdened by many complications as avascular necrosis and osteomyelitis even if a proper debridement of extruded talus is performed. Few case reports or case series were published, and because of the rarity of this event, there are no guidelines for treatment. We report the first case on an octogenarian man providing a long-term follow-up performing contrast enhanced magnetic resonances. The authors report the case of an octogenarian man who fell from an olive tree reporting a total talus extrusion associated with the fracture of the medial malleolus. After an accurate debridement and washing of the wound, the talus was anatomically repositioned and the fracture was treated with an external fixator. The wound healed with difficulty after 12 months and the patient developed a chronic osteomyelitis of the talar dome and avascular necrosis of talar head. We followed the patient for 24 months performing contrast enhanced magnetic resonances and evaluating the development of the avascular necrosis. Even if we encountered these complications, the treatment allowed the patient to walk without pain, using a talus type shoe and one crutch. Although the literature suggests that an anatomic replacement of talus allows avoiding main complications, we deem that the patient's age is an important biological feature to consider in the prognostic stratification. Moreover, primary talectomy and tibio-calcaneal fusion should be reserved as a salvage procedure. Talus replacement allows an overall good outcome for the patients, retaining height, and allowing a good quality of life

    Combining on-hardware prototyping and high level simulation for DSE of multi-ASIP system

    Abstract-Modern heterogeneous multi-processor embedded systems very often expose to the designer a large number of degrees of freedom, related to the application partitioning/mapping and to the component-and system-level architecture composition. The number is even larger when the designer targets systems based on configurable Application Specific Instructionset Processors, due to the fine customizability of their internal architecture. This poses the need for effective and user-friendly design tools, capable to deal with the extremely wide systemlevel design space exposed by multi-processor architecture and, at the same time, with an extended variety of processing element architectural configurations, to be evaluated in detail and in reasonable times. As a possible solution, within the MADNESS project [1], an integrated toolset has been proposed, combining the benefits of novel fast FPGA-based prototyping techniques with those provided by high-level simulation. In the toolset, the resulting evaluation platform serves as an underlying layer for a Design Space search algorithm. The paper presents the individual tools included in the toolset and their interaction strategy. The approach is then evaluated with a design space exploration case study, taking as a target application a video compression kernel. The integrated toolset has been used to produce a Pareto front of evaluated system-level configurations

    The role of PIAS3, p-STAT3 and ALR in colorectalcancer: new translational molecular features for an old disease

    OBJECTIVE: Human colorectal cancer (CRC) is characterized by a sequence of biological events that determine its induction and progression. Gut microbiota has an impor-tant role in this multistep model of carcinogen-esis, as well as constitutive activation of Signal Transducer and Activator Factors 3 (p-STAT3) and Protein Inhibitor of Activated STAT3 (PIAS3), which negatively controls STAT3. It has been re-ported that a liver growth factor, the Augmenter of Liver Regeneration (ALR), an anti-apoptotic, anti-metastatic factor, exerts protective/cell sur-vival and anti-metastatic activities and has been detected highly expressed in neoplastic cells. PATIENTS AND METHODS: To evaluate, by immunohistochemistry, p-STAT3, PIAS3 and ALR expression in neoplastic human tissues from CRC patients, grouping the data in accord-ance with the histological alterations (G1, G2 and G3) and metastasis presence. Western blot (WB) analysis of ALR was also determined in ne-oplastic and surrounding tissues. Finally, cell proliferation (Ki-67) and apoptosis (Bcl-2) were determined. RESULTS : Colon cancer tissue samples showed: (1) ALR and p-STAT3 strongly over-ex-pression in 100% of G1 tissue samples, reducing in G2 and G3 tissue samples; (2) PIAS3 immuno-logical determination was poorly expressed in G1 tissue samples and highly expressed in the 100% of colorectal tissues from group G2 and G3. Ki-67 progressively increases with the im-portance of the anatomic-pathological altera-tions and Bcl-2 resulted higher in G3 tissue sam-ples compared to G1 neoplastic tissues. WB data evidenced, in neoplastic tissues, compared to the tumour-surrounding tissues, ALR over-ex-pressed in G1 neoplastic tissues and down-ex-pressed in G3 neoplastic tissues.CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrate a dif-ferent dynamism of the investigated factors in relation to the severity of CRC histological find-ings. We hypothesize that the positive expres-sion of ALR and p-STAT3 in the neoplastic tis-sue samples from CRC G1 group, associated to the absence of PIAS3, could be useful marker to identify an early stage of the disease. Based on these data and on our previous studies on gut microbiota in precancerous intestinal lesions, we are confident that, after microbial priming, a cascade of molecular events is started. So, the detectable molecules acting in these initial steps should be considered for the study of CRC progression and therapy
