The problem-based learning (PBL) is a teaching-learning method that uses
the problem as a starting point for the acquisition and integration of new
knowledge. In the development of PBL the problem is the way to achieve the
knowledge, skills and abilities. Problem-based learning and case study focuses
on the student and therefore imply a change in the teacher role: from protagonist
to tutor or guide. A tutor offers questions that contribute to understanding and
managing the problem promoting meaningful learning. On the other hand,
information and communication technologies introduces important changes in
teaching and learning on the basis of two issues: a) access and how to acquire
information, b) new forms of teacher-student relationship. This work shows
some experiences for the development of PBL, case studies and concept mapping
as classroom experiences for Biological Sciences students at the Complutense
University of Madrid. Two biological sciences fields were considered: plant
physiology and evolutionary plant biology

Francisco A. Delay model for the dynamics of information units in the digital environment
The digital revolution has transformed the exchange of information between people, blurring the traditional roles of sources and recipients as active and passive entities. To study this, we build on a publicly available database of quotes, organized as units of information flowing through media and blogs with minimal distortion. Building on this, we offer an innovative interpretation of the observed temporal patterns through a minimal model with two ingredients: a two-way feedback between sources and recipients, and a delay in the media’s response to activity on blogs. Our model successfully fits the variety of observed patterns, revealing different attention decays in media and blogs, with rebounds of information typically occurring between 1 and 4 days after the initial dissemination. More important perhaps, the model uncovers a functional relationship between the rate of information flow from media to blogs and the decay of public attention, suggesting a simplification in the mechanisms of information exchange in digital media. Although further research is required to generalize these findings fully, our results demonstrate that even a bare-bones model can capture essential mechanisms of information dynamics in the digital environment
Accuracy of periodontitis diagnosis obtained using multiple molecular biomarkers in oral fluids: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Aim
To determine the accuracy of biomarker combinations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva through meta-analysis to diagnose periodontitis in systemically healthy subjects.
Methods
Studies on combining two or more biomarkers providing a binary classification table, sensitivity/specificity values or group sizes in subjects diagnosed with periodontitis were included. The search was performed in August 2022 through PUBMED, EMBASE, Cochrane, LILACS, SCOPUS and Web of Science. The methodological quality of the articles selected was evaluated using the QUADAS-2 checklist. Hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic modelling was employed to perform the meta-analyses (CRD42020175021).
Results
Twenty-one combinations in GCF and 47 in saliva were evaluated. Meta-analyses were possible for six salivary combinations (median sensitivity/specificity values): IL-6 with MMP-8 (86.2%/80.5%); IL-1β with IL-6 (83.0%/83.7%); IL-1β with MMP-8 (82.7%/80.8%); MIP-1α with MMP-8 (71.0%/75.6%); IL-1β, IL-6 and MMP-8 (81.8%/84.3%); and IL-1β, IL-6, MIP-1α and MMP-8 (76.6%/79.7%).
Conclusions
Two-biomarker combinations in oral fluids show high diagnostic accuracy for periodontitis, which is not substantially improved by incorporating more biomarkers. In saliva, the dual combinations of IL-1β, IL-6 and MMP-8 have an excellent ability to detect periodontitis and a good capacity to detect non-periodontitis. Because of the limited number of biomarker combinations evaluated, further research is required to corroborate these observationsThis study was funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) through the project PI21/00588 and co-funded by the European UnionS
Long-term outcomes with agalsidase alfa enzyme replacement therapy: Analysis using deconstructed composite events
This is a retrospective analysis of Fabry Outcome Survey data from children/adults (n = 677) receiving agalsidase alfa enzyme replacement therapy for a median of 3 years, examining cerebrovascular, cardiac, and renal morbidity endpoints separately. Cardiac events occurred at younger ages than cerebrovascular or renal events, cerebrovascular events were more frequent in females than males, and males were more likely to experience cardiac and renal events at a younger age than females
Acylcarnitine profile in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: The value of butyrylcarnitine as a prognostic marker
Optimal prognostic markers evaluating early neuroprotective interventions in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are lacking. This study was designed to assess the prognostic value of acylcarnitines in neonatal HIE.An observational cohort study was conducted over 10 years in 67 HIE. Variables analyzed included sex, blood cord pH, Apgar score, hypothermia treatment (yes/no), neuron-specific enolase (NSE) levels, and clinical outcome (neurological examination, brain magnetic resonance imaging [MRI], and electroencephalogram) before discharge and at 6 months. Acylcarnitine profiles were analyzed by tandem-mass spectrometry on dried-blood spots collected on day 3 for newborn screening. A cohort of healthy newborns was used as control group.HIE patients had significantly increased C4, C5, C5:1, C6, C6-OH, C8 levels (all P < .01) and decreased long-chain acylcarnitine levels (P < .03). Hypothermia treatment was associated with a decrease in C4 levels (p = 0.005) and an increase in most long-chain acylcarnitine levels (P < .01). A significant association was found between C4 levels and NSE on day 1 of hypothermia treatment (P = .002) and abnormal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at discharge (P = .037). In the hypothermia group, C4 levels decreased in patients with favorable outcomes but remained high in those who progressed unfavorably.C4 appears to be a good prognostic marker in HIE, as blood levels correlated with NSE levels and abnormal MRI findings. Furthermore, hypothermia did not lead to decreased levels in patients with adverse outcomes
