A novel design of active inductors based on current controlled voltage sources
This brief presents a new structure of active inductors. These synthetic inductors are designed using current controlled voltage sources. The signal flow graph method is used for this purpose. For the practical realization, operational transresistance amplifiers (OTRAs) are replicated using current conveyors. The proposed inductors have very interesting properties because the value of its inductance is proportional to the product of the parameter of the OTRAs (rm1rm2) and thus, small capacitor values can be used. Current conveyor based simulated inductors are presented and SPICE simulations are given to show the viability of the proposed synthesis technique. ©2010 IEEE
Measuring the Higgs boson's parity using tau --> rho nu
We present a very promising method for a measurement of the Higgs boson
parity using the H/A -> tau^+ tau^- --> rho^+ nu rho^- nu --> pi^+ pi^0 nu pi^-
pi^0 nu decay chain. The method is both model independent and independent of
the Higgs production mechanism. Angular distributions of the tau decay products
which are sensitive to the Higgs boson parity are defined and are found to be
measurable using typical properties of a future detector for an e^+ e^- linear
collider. The prospects for the measurement of the parity of a Higgs boson with
a mass of 120 GeV are quantified for the case of e^+ e^- collisons of 500 GeV
center of mass energy with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb^-1. The Standard
Model Higgsstrahlung production process is used as an example.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX, version of Phys. Lett.
Assessment of photobiological safety of energy-efficiency urban lighting
Exceeding the safe threshold for exposure on high energy radiation (UV and blue light) could cause the emergence of a number of diseases. Eyesight is particularly sensitive to excessive lighting. This paper presents the laboratory research on the assessment of the photobiological risk generated by the energy-efficiency urban lighting. The results show that LED lighting systems can be a source of radiation that significantly negatively affects the eyesight and could contribute to circadian rhythm disorders
Probing the CP nature of the Higgs boson at linear colliders with tau spin correlations; the case of mixed scalar--pseudoscalar couplings
The prospects for the measurement of the pseudoscalar admixture in the
h-tau-tau coupling to a Standard Model Higgs boson of 120 GeV mass are
discussed in a quantitative manner e+ e- collisions of 350 GeV centre-of-mass
energy. Specific angular distributions in the h --> tau tau; tau --> rho nu
decay chain can be used to probe mixing angles of scalar--pseudoscalar
h-tau-tau couplings. In the discussion of the feasibility of the method,
assumptions on the properties of a future detector for an e+ e- linear collider
such as TESLA are used. The Standard Model Higgsstrahlung production process is
taken as an example. For the expected performance of a typical Linear Collider
set-up, the sensitivity of a measurement of the scalar--pseudoscalar mixing
angle turned out to be 6 degree. It will be straightforward to apply our
results to estimate the sensitivity of a measurement, in cases another scenario
of the Higgs boson sector (Standard Model or not) is chosen by nature. The
experimental error of the method is expected to be limited by the statistics.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX. Corrections of published version include
Measuring the Higgs boson parity at a Linear Collider using the tau impact parameter and tau --> rho nu decay
We demonstrate that a measurement of the impact parameter in one-prong tau
decay can be useful for the determination of the Higgs boson parity in the H/A
--> tau tau; tau --> rho nu decay chain. We have estimated that for a detection
set-up such as TESLA, use of the information from the tau impact parameter can
improve the significance of the measurement of the parity of the Standard Model
120 GeV Higgs boson to 4.5 sigma, and in general by factor of about 1.5 with
respect to the method where this information is not used.
We also show that the variation in the assumption on the precision of the
measurement of the impact parameter and/or pi's momenta does not affect the
sensitivity of the method. This is because the method remains limited by the
type of twofold ambiguity in reconstructing the tau momentum.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, LaTe
End‑of‑life care for patients with advanced lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Survey among Polish pulmonologists
Copyright by Medycyna Praktyczna, Kraków 2019 INTRODUCTION There is evidence that people with nonmalignant disease receive poorer end‑of‑life (EOL) care compared with people with cancer. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to assess the selected aspects of symptomatic treatment and communication between physicians and patients diagnosed with either advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or lung cancer. METHODS A questionnaire survey was conducted online among members of the Polish Respiratory Society. RESULTS Properly completed questionnaires were returned by 174 respondents (27.2% of those proved to be contacted by email). In COPD, 32% of respondents always or often used opioids in chronic breathlessness and 18.3% always or often referred patients to a palliative care (PC) specialist. Nearly 80% of the respondents claimed that bedside discussions on EOL issues with people with COPD are essential, although only 20% would always or often initiate them. In people with lung cancer, opioids were routinely used for relief of chronic breathlessness by 80% of physicians; 81.7% referred patients to a PC specialist. More than half of the respondents always or often discussed EOL issues only with the patient’s caregivers or relatives. Younger physicians, those at an earlier stage of their career, those caring for higher numbers of patients with lung cancer, and those who were better acquainted with Polish Respiratory Society recommendations for PC in chronic lung diseases seemed to provide better EOL care for COPD patients. CONCLUSIONS Patients with COPD, as compared with patients with lung cancer, were less frequently treated with opioids to relieve chronic breathlessness or referred for a PC consultation. Discussing the EOL issues with a patient was generally found challenging by physicians, and most often pursued with caregivers instead. The COPD recommendations on PC may prove helpful in providing better EOL care by pulmonologists

The Monte Carlo Program KoralW version 1.51 and The Concurrent Monte Carlo KoralW&YFSWW3 with All Background Graphs and First Order Corrections to W-Pair Production
The version 1.51 of the Monte Carlo (MC) program KoralW for all processes is presented. The most important change
since the previous version 1.42 is the facility for writing MC events on the
mass storage device and re-processing them later on. In the re-processing one
may modify parameters of the Standard Model in order to fit them to
experimental data. Another important new feature is a possibility of including
complete corrections to double-resonant W-pair
component-processes in addition to all background (non-WW) graphs. The
inclusion is done with the help of the YFSWW3 MC event generator for fully
exclusive differential distributions (event-per-event). Technically, it is done
in such a way that YFSWW3 runs concurrently with KoralW as a separate slave
process, reading momenta of the MC event generated by KoralW and returning the
correction weight to KoralW. KoralW introduces the
correction using this weight, and finishes processing the event (rejection due
to total MC weight, hadronization, etc.). The communication between KoralW and
YFSWW3 is done with the help of the FIFO facility of the UNIX/Linux operating
system. This does not require any modifications of the FORTRAN source codes.
The resulting Concurrent MC event generator KoralW&YFSWW3 looks from the user's
point of view as a regular single MC event generator with all the standard
features.Comment: 8 figures, 5 tables, submitted to Comput. Phys. Commu
