Partisanship and the party system
The defining properties of party identification long established for the United States fail with some frequency to be replicated in electoral systems abroad. A number of plausible suggestions have been made to account for this system-level variability: Most of these have some face merit, but none taken alone is adequate to provide a full cross-system explanation. Variation in party system size or fractionalization has recently been discussed as another source of differential dynamics of party loyalties. Unfortunately, the conventional means of assessing party identification properties are subject to rather severe artifacts, typically ignored, when comparisons are made across systems of very different party size. The conceptual stakes underlying key methods options for such comparisons—most notably, between continuous and discrete statistical tools—are examined. The use of continuous statistics for systems of very multiple parties rests on an assumption that voters do in some degree regard these party systems as imbedded in a continuous space. A simple test for this assumption is mounted in four systems and unsurprisingly it shows very clear support. Confronting the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with the Study of Scalar Leptons at Future Linear e+e- Colliders
Sleptons can easily be found at future linear e+e- colliders if kinematically
accessible. Measurements of their masses and decay distributions would then
determine MSSM parameters. This paper presents a detailed MC study of the
production and decay of the lighter scalar tau lepton, stau1. We found that
mstau1 and the left-right mixing angle of stau would be measured within an
error of a few percent. tanbeta is determinable in some region of the parameter
space through simultaneous studies of stau1-and selectron-pair production: the
polarization measurement of the tau leptons from stau1 decays and the M1, mchi1
determination using selectron pair production and decay. We also point out the
possibility to determine bino-selectron-e coupling through the measurement of
the angular distribution of the selectron-pair production. The error on the
coupling is expected to be comparable to its typical SUSY radiative correction,
which is proportional to log(msquark/mslepton). The radiative correction
affects M1 and tanbeta determination, necessitating the full 1-loop radiative
correction to the selectron production processes. The implication of these
measurements of the MSSM parameters on selecting models of the origin of

Spin-dependent transport in metal/semiconductor tunnel junctions
This paper describes a model as well as experiments on spin-polarized tunnelling with the aid of optical spin orientation. This involves tunnel junctions between a magnetic material and gallium arsenide (GaAs), where the latter is optically excited with circularly polarized light in order to generate spin-polarized carriers. A transport model is presented that takes account of carrier capture in the semiconductor surface states, and describes the semiconductor surface in terms of a spin-dependent energy distribution function. The so-called surface spin-splitting can be calculated from the balance of the polarized electron and hole flow in the semiconductor subsurface region, the polarized tunnelling current across the tunnel barrier between the magnetic material and the semiconductor surface, and the spin relaxation at the semiconductor surface.
Measurements are presented of the circular-polarization-dependent photocurrent (the so-called helicity asymmetry) in thin-film tunnel junctions of Co/Al2O3/GaAs. In the absence of a tunnel barrier, the helicity asymmetry is caused by magneto-optical effects (magnetic circular dichroism). In the case where a tunnel barrier is present, the data cannot be explained by magneto-optical effects alone; the deviations provide evidence that spin-polarized tunnelling due to optical spin orientation occurs. In Co/τ-MnAl/AlAs/GaAs junctions no deviations from the magneto-optical effects are observed, most probably due to the weak spin polarization of τ-MnAl along the tunnelling direction; the latter is corroborated by bandstructure calculations. Finally, the application of photoexcited GaAs for spin-polarized tunnelling in a scanning tunnelling microscope is discussed.
A Collider Signature of the Supersymmetric Golden Region
Null results of experimental searches for the Higgs boson and the
superpartners imply a certain amount of fine-tuning in the electroweak sector
of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The "golden region" in the
MSSM parameter space is the region where the experimental constraints are
satisfied and the amount of fine-tuning is minimized. In this region, the stop
trilinear soft term is large, leading to a significant mass splitting between
the two stop mass eigenstates. As a result, the decay of the heavier stop into
the lighter stop and a Z boson is kinematically allowed throughout the golden
region. We propose that the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can
search for this decay through an inclusive signature, Z+2jb+missing Et+X. We
evaluate the Standard Model backgrounds for this channel, and identify a set of
cuts that would allow detection of the supersymmetric contribution at the LHC
for the MSSM parameters typical of the golden region. We also discuss other
possible interpretations of a signal for new physics in the Z+2jb+missing Et+X
channel, and suggest further measurements that could be used to distinguish

Prenatal Treatment of Thyroid Hormone Cell Membrane Transport Defect Caused by MCT8 Gene Mutation
[Background]: Mutations of the thyroid hormone (TH)-specific cell membrane transporter, monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8), produce an X-chromosome-linked syndrome of TH deficiency in the brain and excess in peripheral tissues. The clinical consequences include brain hypothyroidism causing severe psychoneuromotor abnormalities (no speech, truncal hypotonia, and spastic quadriplegia) and hypermetabolism (poor weight gain, tachycardia, and increased metabolism, associated with high serum levels of the active TH, T3). Treatment in infancy and childhood with TH analogues that reduce serum triiodothyronine (T3) corrects hypermetabolism, but has no effect on the psychoneuromotor deficits. Studies of brain from a 30-week-old MCT8-deficient embryo indicated that brain abnormalities were already present during fetal life.
[Methods]: A carrier woman with an affected male child (MCT8 A252fs268*), pregnant with a second affected male embryo, elected to carry the pregnancy to term. We treated the fetus with weekly 500 μg intra-amniotic instillation of levothyroxine (LT4) from 18 weeks of gestation until birth at 35 weeks. Thyroxine (T4), T3, and thyrotropin (TSH) were measured in the amniotic fluid and maternal serum. Treatment after birth was continued with LT4 and propylthiouracil. Follow-up included brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neurodevelopmental evaluation, both compared with the untreated brother.
[Results]: During intrauterine life, T4 and T3 in the amniotic fluid were maintained above threefold to twofold the baseline and TSH was suppressed by 80%, while maternal serum levels remained unchanged. At birth, the infant serum T4 was 14.5 μg/dL and TSH 8 mU/L, respectively. MRI at six months of age showed near-normal brain myelination compared with much reduced in the untreated brother. Neurodevelopmental assessment showed developmental quotients in receptive language and problem-solving, and gross motor and fine motor function ranged from 12 to 25 at 31 months in the treated boy and from 1 to 7 at 58 months in the untreated brother.
[Conclusions]: This is the first demonstration that prenatal treatment improved the neuromotor and neurocognitive function in MCT8 deficiency. Earlier treatment with TH analogues that concentrate in the fetus when given to the mother may further rescue the phenotype.This work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, USA, DK15070 to Samuel Refetoff and DK110322 to Alexandra M. Radiative contribution to neutrino masses and mixing in SSM
In an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (popularly known
as the SSM), three right handed neutrino superfields are introduced to
solve the -problem and to accommodate the non-vanishing neutrino masses
and mixing. Neutrino masses at the tree level are generated through parity
violation and seesaw mechanism. We have analyzed the full effect of one-loop
contributions to the neutrino mass matrix. We show that the current three
flavour global neutrino data can be accommodated in the SSM, for both
the tree level and one-loop corrected analyses. We find that it is relatively
easier to accommodate the normal hierarchical mass pattern compared to the
inverted hierarchical or quasi-degenerate case, when one-loop corrections are

Ubiquitin transfer by a RING E3 ligase occurs from a closed E2~ubiquitin conformation

However the proposal that the RING dependent closed conformation of E2~Ub represents the active form that mediates ubiquitin transfer has yet to be experimentally tested. To test this hypothesis we use single molecule Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (smFRET) to measure the conformation of a FRET labelled E2~Ub conjugate, which distinguishes between closed and alternative conformations. We describe a real-time FRET assay with a thioester linked E2~Ub conjugate to monitor single ubiquitination events and demonstrate that ubiquitin is transferred to substrate from the closed conformation. These findings are likely to be relevant to all RING E3 catalysed reactions ligating ubiquitin and other ubiquitin-like proteins (Ubls) to substrates.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Precision measurements of of the proton and the deuteron with 6 GeV electrons
The inclusive polarized structure functions of the proton and deuteron, g1p
and g1d, were measured with high statistical precision using polarized 6 GeV
electrons incident on a polarized ammonia target in Hall B at Jefferson
Laboratory. Electrons scattered at lab angles between 18 and 45 degrees were
detected using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). For the usual
DIS kinematics, Q^2>1 GeV^2 and the final-state invariant mass W>2 GeV, the
ratio of polarized to unpolarized structure functions g1/F1 is found to be
nearly independent of Q^2 at fixed x. Significant resonant structure is
apparent at values of W up to 2.3 GeV. In the framework of perturbative QCD,
the high-W results can be used to better constrain the polarization of quarks
and gluons in the nucleon, as well as high-twist contributions
