International audienceDescription of Perigona (Neoperigona) belloi n. sp., a microphthalmous species that lives in the Andes of Ecuador (Cerro Blanco, Pichincha province and Mojanda, Imbabura province), in leaf litter, in the transition zone between the high montane forest and the lower shrub paramo

Five new species of genus Leptomeson Jeannel, 1924 are described here, four from Croatia and one from Bosnia and Herzegovina: L. radjai n. sp. of from the pit Zvekača, close to Šibenik, L. dalmatinus n. sp. from the pit Maravića jama, on the island of Čiovo, L. bujasi n. sp. from the pit Jama kod Matešića stana, on the island of Brač, L. biokovensis n. sp. from the pit Pretnerova jama, on the Biokovo Mountain and L. raguzi n. sp. from the cave Majića ponor, near Grude.

Two new ultraspecialized troglomorphic Leptodirini from Croatia (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae)

Two new ultraspecialized troglomorphic Leptodirini (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae) from two Croatian caves are described. Hygrodromus (new genus) nikolinae, a new species from Mladenova cave near Orebić, is a very enigmatic taxon of “tetramerous”Leptodirini, markedly distinct for several morphological features in antennae, mouthparts, male genitalia and the peculiar sexually dimorphic apex of elytra. However, because of some characters, it could be assigned to the phyletic lineage of Hadesia and Nauticiella, which so far includes only “pentamerous”species. Leptomeson vuicae from Dragina lipa jama cave near Čelopek in central Dalmatia, owing to its morphological features, is the south-eastern substitutive adelphotaxon of L. dombrowskii, from which it differs by its smaller size, longer elytral pubescence and the different shape of the median lobe of the aedeagus with a stouter apex

Nesaeoduvalius (gen. n.) vailatii sp. n., from Euboia island (Eastern Greece) (Coleoptera: Carabidae, Trechinae)

Nesaeoduvalius (new genus) vailatii Casale & Giachino, new species (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechini) is described and illustrated from the Euboia (Evvia) island (eastern Greece). The new taxon belongs to the Duvalius "isotopic" trechine lineage, but is markedly characterized by the peculiar combination of several morphological features in the general shape, chaetotaxy of head, serrate lateral margins of elytra, and features of male genitalia (both in median lobe of aedeagus and endophallus). Its putative position amongst the trechines of the Duvalius phyletic lineage is discussed. Data on the distribution and habitat of this new, insular and unexpected taxon are also provided

An ecological survey of the invertebrate community at the epigean/hypogean interface

We studied the ecological continuum between caves and the associated network of fissures – Milieu Souterrain Superficiel (MSS) – in an hypogean site in the Graian Alps, Italy. Over one year, we surveyed the faunal assemblages by means of pitfall traps placed in the caves and specific subterranean sampling devices (SSD) buried in the MSS. We used generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) to compare the spatial and temporal dynamics of the subterranean invertebrates inhabiting the two environments. As expected, arthropod communities occurring near the surface were characterized by minor level of subterranean adaptations, and conversely, subterranean species were more abundant and diversified at higher depths, both in the caves and in the MSS. Diversity and abundance of external elements in the superficial layers were found to be highly seasonal dependent, with minor values in winter compared to the other seasons. We provided information about the faunal assemblages dwelling in the two hypogean compartments, and we characterized the microclimatic conditions therein. We discussed the existence of an ecological gradient of specialization extending from the surface to the deep hypogean layers, which can be interpreted in light of the microclimatic changes occurring at increasing depths and the parallel decrease in available organic matter
