Estimation of Population Size of Dentaria Enneaphyllos in the Vicinity of the Bełchatów Brown Coal Mine and the Attempt of its Metaplantation

The impact of anthropopressure on the flora in the vicinity of the Bełchatów Brown Coal Mine in Central Poland has been substantially strong. Consequently, certain changes in habitat conditions have been observed, leading to a decline in particular species stands. Mechanical damage, as well as the mine and power plant expansion have contributed to further species decline in the area. Ex situ conservation, e.g. metaplantation from native to secondary localities seems an efficient method of ensuring the species survival in the local flora. One of the species is to be found in Wola Wydrzyna (under the Forest District Administration of Bełchatów) is Drooping Bittercress Dentaria enneaphyllos. Its population was first recorded in the area in 1979. However, since 2009 the forest complex has undergone a regular expansion of the Bełchatów Brown Coal Mine. The forest area is to be utilised for the future Szczerców coal deposit. Therefore, in 2000 the method of Dentaria enneaphyllos metaplantation was applied

The knotted rails – economic situation and geopolitical determinants of Moldovan railways

Basarabia during the history was nothing more than periphery of Tsar Russia, Romania and finally Soviet Union, so was rather neglected and undeveloped rural province. The Ribbentrop-Molotov pact and creation of Moldovan SSR caused disintegration of Basarabia as a historical land. In the result it was isolated from Romania and many transport routes were cut by Soviet republican border. As long as Moldova existed as a part of USSR, that was not a serious problem, but when Soviet Union collapsed and republics announced its independence, republican border changed into state border. All that caused that all Moldovan transport system and especially railways were disintegrated. In addition, factual secession of Transnistria brought blockade of Moldovan railway transport on its territory and lost control over all infrastructure and rolling stock, what caused serious problems to Moldovan foreign trade. The problem of railways appeared to be one of the most important subjects of negotiations between Chişinău and Tiraspol. In addition Moldovan railways are underdeveloped and its network cannot ensure full security and development of state. Moldova is too poor and too weak country to overcome these problems. On the other hand, Moldovan government made great work to improve condition of railway transport and ensure economic independence

Bezpieczeństwo narodowe zracjonalizowane? Refleksyjne wyznaczanie granic polityczności.

Celem artykułu jest analiza sprzeczności między politycznością kwestii bezpieczeństwa narodowego a jej racjonalizacją, związaną przede wszystkim z procesem modernizacji refleksyjnej i transformacją w społeczeństwo (światowego) ryzyka. Przyjęta tu perspektywa teoretyczna składa się z trzech komponentów. Są nimi: teoria modernizacji refleksyjnej (A. Giddens, U. Beck, S. Lash), teoria polityczności Ch. Mouffe (jako kontynuacja klasycznej teorii C. Schmitta), a także adaptowane na potrzeby socjologii teorie bezpieczeństwa. Rozważania podejmuję w czterech krokach: analizując istotę polityczności bezpieczeństwa narodowego; wskazując na konflikty wokół bezpieczeństwa (agonistyczne i antagonistyczne, wewnętrzne i zewnętrzne, a także refleksywne samozagrożenia); identyfikując aktorów późnej nowoczesności relewantnych dla problematyki bezpieczeństwa; wskazując na kulturowe uwarunkowania mechanizmów wyznaczania granic polityczności. Role of entrepreneurs in selected economic growth conceptions

Współczesny kryzys finansowy to rezultat polityki wielkich korporacji finansowych, które kreowały wirtualne produkty bankowe nie znajdujące pokrycia w rzeczywistych możliwościach gospodarki światowej. W niniejszym artykule wskazano trzy różne koncepcje wzrostu, które charakteryzują się daleko idącym zróżnicowaniem w zakresie roli przedsiębiorców w organizowaniu procesów gospodarczych. Model wzrostu równomiernego R. Solowa ujmuje przedsiębiorców w kategoriach pasywnych odbiorców sytuacji rynkowej, uzależniając ich inwestycje od wielkości oszczędności gospodarstw domowych. Z kolei, model R. Harroda i H. Domara podkreśla również niezależność przedsiębiorstw w tworzeniu popytu inwestycyjnego, kładąc nacisk, jak większość post-keynesowskich modeli wzrostu, na rolę inwestycji w kreowaniu równomiernego wzrostu gospodarczego. W końcu, M. Kalecki przypisuje przedsiębiorstwom dużą niezależność w zakresie generowania zarówno oszczędności, jak i wzrostu gospodarczego. Przy czym, sam proces inwestowania jest jednym z czynników wywołujących nierównomierny wzrost dochodu. W niniejszym artykule zwraca się uwagę na funkcję instytucji finansowych w kreowaniu kryzysu w odniesieniu do poszczególnych modeli wzrostu gospodarczego. W konsekwencji, cykliczność wzrostu gospodarczego, wyzwalana przez różnorodne transakcje rynków finansowych, uzasadnia rolę instytucji kontroli społeczno-gospodarczej w każdym z tych modeli wzrostu gospodarczego.The contemporary financial crisis was caused by the policy of corporate financial giants, who created virtual financial products that exceeded the actual capacity of the global economy. This paper analyses three conceptions of growth which widely vary in terms of the role of en-trepreneurs in the creation of economic processes. The Solow model of steady state growth sees entrepreneurs as passive recipients of market conditions, their investment decision being dependent on savings. R. Harrod’s and H. Domar’s model highlights the independence of entrepreneurs in the creation of investment demand and, like most post-Keynesian growth models, attaches great importance to the role of investment in the process of steady stateeconomicgrowth. Finally, M. Kalecki describes entrepreneurs as independent creators of both savings and economic growth. On the other hand, he believes that the investment process itself is one of the determinants of un-steady growth. This paper clarifies the role of financial institutions in the creation of crisis in the light of economic growth models. In search of a new concept of nature protection – the idea of restoration

Ochrona przyrody ma ważne znaczenie we wszystkich dyskusjach o stanie przyrody i występujących obecnie problemach i konfliktach ekologicznych. Współcześnie jej elementem jest szeroko rozumiana koncepcja renaturalizacji odnosząca się nie tylko do odtwarzania stanów natury, ale również do ochrony procesów przyrodniczych. Ekologia renaturalizacji ma charakter transdyscyplinarny i uwzględnia zarówno specyfikę systemów przyrodniczych, jak i uwarunkowania społeczno-gospodarcze ich rozwoju. Renaturalizacja powinna być także komponentem procesu zrównoważonego gospodarowania i dyskusji nad możliwościami substytucji kapitału naturalnego kapitałem antropogenicznym czy problematyką wyceny świadczeń ekosystemów.Nature protection is important in all discussions about the state of nature and the currently existing ecological problems and conflicts. The widely nowadays-understood concept of restoration is an element of it; and it is related not only to the states of nature, but also to the protection of natural processes. Restoration ecology is a trans-disciplinary and includes not only the specificity of natural systems, but also the socioeconomic determinants of their development. Ptychoplasma conica isp. nov. : a new bivalve locomotion trace fossil from the Lower Jurassic (Hettangian) alluvial sediments of Sołtyków, Holy Cross Mountains, Poland

A new locomotion (repichnion) trace fossil, Ptychoplasma conica isp. nov., which is composed of chains of hypichnial mounds, is described from Hettangian alluvial sediments in Central Poland. Its occurrence is limited to amalgamated crevasse sandstones. The trace fossil is associated with fresh water bivalves belonging probably to Unionidae. This trace fossil reflects rhythmic (?diurnal) movement of the tracemaker in accordance with the direction of flow in the crevasse channel, where the for ward movement took place in the shallow part of a sandstone layer and was interrupted by resting episodes in deeper sediment layer along the mud-sand interface. Episodic flood events forced bivalves to produce escape structures, moving from deeper (previous) to upper (later) levels of lateral movements. Some vertical burrows with bivalve body fossils preserved at the bottom suggest a taphonomic burial. P. conica ranges from Late Triassic to Hettangian

Morphometric parameters of Phragmites australis as indicators of soil salinity: habitat and remote sensing approach as exemplified by brine-supplied salt marshes in the Parsęta Valley (NW Poland)

The paper illustrates an application of morphometric parameters of common reed to locate saline patches in extensive rush complexes. The study evaluated the applicability of aerial photographs and explored effects of soil salinity on reed stem mean height (r = -0.72) and diameter (r = 0.52)

Angiogenesis in anatomy, activity and information in patients with advanced breast cancer

Postęp współczesnej biologii umożliwia identyfikację czynników molekularnych, które mają wpływ na dynamikę wzrostu nowotworów złośliwych. Angiogeneza, czyli proces powstawania nowych naczyń w obrębie zmian nowotworowych, jest niezbędna dla wzrostu guza pierwotnego i rozwoju przerzutów. Z badań podstawowych wynika, że zahamowanie tego procesu może prowadzić do regresji nowotworu. Z tego powodu hamowanie angiogenezy może być istotnym sposobem leczenia chorych na raka piersi. Najistotniejszą rolę w procesie neoangiogenezy odgrywa czynnik wzrostu śródbłonka naczyń. Wykazano, że przeciwciało monoklonalne - bewacyzumab - hamuje aktywność tego czynnika u chorych na uogólnionego raka piersi. Przeprowadzono duże randomizowane badania III fazy, w których w grupach leczonych eksperymentalnie stosowano bewacyzumab w skojarzeniu z paklitakselem lub docetakselem, a w grupach kontrolnych jedynie paklitaksel lub docetaksel. Na podstawie tych badań wykazano, że w leczeniu pierwszego rzutu chorych na uogólnionego raka piersi leczenie skojarzone z udziałem bewacyzumabu powoduje wydłużenie czasu do progresji i zwiększenie odsetka odpowiedzi terapeutycznych w porównaniu z leczeniem wyłącznie chemioterapią. Zastosowanie bewacyzumabu w skojarzeniu z taksanami jest skutecznym i bezpiecznym leczeniem u chorych na zaawansowanego raka piersi. Inne metody leczenia antyangiogennego są obecnie przedmiotem intensywnych badań klinicznych.Angiogenesis, the process of new blood vessel formation, is required for tumor growth and metastasis. There is preclinical evidence supporting the role of neoangiogenesis in tumor progression and metastasis. Vascular endothelial growth factor plays the key role in angiogenesis. The inhibition of angiogenesis may be an effective treatment for patients with advanced breast cancer. Bevacizumab, monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor is active in breast cancer patients. A large randomized III phase clinical trails demonstrated a significant benefit in progression free survival and clinical response rate from addition of bevacizumab to paclitaxel or docetaxel for first line treatment of advanced breast cancer. Bevacizumab plus paclitaxel or docetaxel is effective and safe treatment in patients with advanced breast cancer. Other antiangionenic therapies are now under intensive clinical research
