    Approche multi-niveaux de la gestion des bio-agresseurs : moyen d’analyse des expérimentations du Groupe de Recherche en Agriculture Biologique

    La gestion des bio-agresseurs repose, selon les principes de l'agriculture biologique, sur une approche globale de l'agrosystème en lien avec les écosystèmes environnants. Cependant la demande par les producteurs de solutions de protection rapidement opérationnelles peut amener l'expérimentateur à privilégier la recherche de mesures basées sur les produits phytosanitaires. Depuis 30 ans, le Groupe de Recherche en Agriculture Biologique (GRAB) conduit des expérimentations en productions végétales biologiques. Il a cherché à développer une grille d'analyse de ses résultats pour les situer vis-à-vis des principes de l’approche globale des écosystèmes. Cette analyse s'est inspirée de différentes approches multi-niveaux de la protection des cultures. Elle hiérarchise les expérimentations en 3 niveaux suivant le caractère plus ou moins direct de la protection vis à vis des bio-agresseurs. Le nombre d'expérimentations conduites par niveau a ainsi été suivi pendant neuf années. Des expérimentations dans chacun des niveaux ont montré des résultats d'efficacité. Mais les limites rencontrées, ont engendré un accroissement des recherches du GRAB vers les niveaux d'approche global du système. Cette analyse multi-niveaux s'avère prometteuse pour piloter le choix des futures expérimentations d'une station ou d'une filière. Elle peut permettre de veiller à l'équilibre entre niveaux, et d'anticiper les compétences et les partenariats nouveaux requis par les approches globales

    Unstable Disk Galaxies. I. Modal Properties

    I utilize the Petrov-Galerkin formulation and develop a new method for solving the unsteady collisionless Boltzmann equation in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. In the first order approximation, the method reduces to a linear eigenvalue problem which is solved using standard numerical methods. I apply the method to the dynamics of a model stellar disk which is embedded in the field of a soft-centered logarithmic potential. The outcome is the full spectrum of eigenfrequencies and their conjugate normal modes for prescribed azimuthal wavenumbers. The results show that the fundamental bar mode is isolated in the frequency space while spiral modes belong to discrete families that bifurcate from the continuous family of van Kampen modes. The population of spiral modes in the bifurcating family increases by cooling the disk and declines by increasing the fraction of dark to luminous matter. It is shown that the variety of unstable modes is controlled by the shape of the dark matter density profile.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Intraspecific trait changes have large impacts on community functional composition but do not affect ecosystem function

Nitrogen enrichment typically shifts trait composition by promoting the dominance of acquisitive plants (high specific leaf area [SLA] and low leaf dry matter content [LDMC]), translating into high biomass production. Changes in mean trait values can be due to shifts in species identity, relative abundances and/or intraspecific trait values. However, we do not know the relative importance of these shifts in determining trait responses to environmental changes, or trait effects on ecosystem functioning, such as biomass production. We quantified the relative importance of species composition, abundance and intraspecific shifts in driving variation in SLA and LDMC, and how these shifts affected above- and below-ground biomass. We measured traits in a grassland experiment manipulating nitrogen fertilisation, plant species richness, foliar fungal pathogen removal and sown functional composition (slow vs. fast species). We fitted structural equation models to test the importance of abundance and intraspecific shifts in determining (a) responses of functional composition to treatments and (b) effects on above- and below-ground biomass. We found that species intraspecific shifts were as important as abundance shifts in determining the overall change in functional composition (community weighted mean trait values), and even had large effects compared to substantial initial variation in sown trait composition. Intraspecific trait shifts resulted in convergence towards intermediate SLA in diverse communities; although convergence was reduced by nitrogen addition and enhanced by pathogen removal. In contrast, large intraspecific shifts in LDMC were not influenced by the treatments. However, despite large responses, intraspecific trait shifts had no effect on above- or below-ground biomass. Only interspecific trait variation affected functioning: below-ground biomass was reduced by SLA and increased by LDMC, while above-ground biomass was increased by SLA. Synthesis. Our results add to a growing body of literature showing large intraspecific trait variation and emphasise the importance of using field collected data to determine community functional composition. However, they also show that intraspecific variation does not necessarily affect ecosystem functioning and therefore response–effect trait relationships may differ between versus within species.Peer reviewe

    Evidence for a meteoritic origin of the September 15, 2007, Carancas crater

    On September 15th, 2007, around 11:45 local time in Peru, near the Bolivian border, the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid produced bright lights in the sky and intense detonations. Soon after, a crater was discovered south of Lake Titicaca. These events have been detected by the Bolivian seismic network and two infrasound arrays operating for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, situated at about 80 and 1620 km from the crater. The localization and origin time computed with the seismic records are consistent with the reported impact. The entry elevation and azimuthal angles of the trajectory are estimated from the observed signal time sequences and backazimuths. From the crater diameter and the airwave amplitudes, the kinetic energy, mass and explosive energy are calculated. Using the estimated velocity of the meteoroid and similarity criteria between orbital elements, an association with possible parent asteroids is attempted. The favorable setting of this event provides a unique opportunity to evaluate physical and kinematic parameters of the object that generated the first actual terrestrial meteorite impact seismically recorded

    The network of infrasound stations (I34MN) in Mongolia daily registers set of infrasound from various sources besides explosions. The data from explosions in mines in region and from other sources detected since 2000 to 2009 in seismic and infrasound stations is analyzed. The analysis these signals dependence of speed distribution of sound from seasonal, wind forces and direction moreover on short distances. From detected in infrasound stations (I34MN) in year 80-90 % of signals make microbaroms, the wide range of their sources is visible from the frequency analysis. From the general analysis registered seismo and acoustic signals of explosions on the seismic and infrasound networks stations miscalculate not only speeds of distribution of sounds on close distances (50-500 km),  and also the speed model of atmosphere is made

    Polar exploration of complex surface germs

    We prove that the topological type of a normal surface singularity pX, 0q provides finite bounds for the multiplicity and polar multiplicity of pX, 0q, as well as for the combinatorics of the families of generic hyperplane sections and of polar curves of the generic plane projections of pX, 0q. A key ingredient in our proof is a topological bound of the growth of the Mather discrepancies of pX, 0q, which allows us to bound the number of point blowups necessary to achieve factorization of any resolution of pX, 0q through its Nash transform. This fits in the program of polar explorations, the quest to determine the generic polar variety of a singular surface germ, to which the final part of the paper is devoted

    Modeling high-redshift galaxies: what can we learn from high and ultra-high resolution hydrodynamical simulations?

    We present results from a high resolution cosmological galaxy formation simulation called Mare Nostrum and a ultra-high resimulation of the first 500 million years of a single, Milky Way (MW) sized galaxy. Using the cosmological run, we measure UV luminosity functions and assess their sensitivity to both cosmological parameters and dust extinction. We find remarkably good agreement with the existing data over the redshift range 4 < z < 7 provided we adopt the favoured cosmology (WMAP 5 year parameters) and a self-consistent treatment of the dust. Cranking up the resolution, we then study in detail a z = 9 protogalaxy sitting at the intersection of cold gas filaments. This high-z MW progenitor grows a dense, rapidly spinning, thin disk which undergoes gravitational fragmention. Star formation in the resulting gas clumps rapidly turns them into globular clusters. A far reaching galactic wind develops, co-powered by the protogalaxy and its cohort of smaller companions populating the filaments. Despite such an impressive blow out, the smooth filamentary material is hardly affected at these redshift

    Samples of Siderastrea collected by the geologist C. F. Hartt during expedition to Brazil (19th century), anddeposited at the National Museum of the Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, have been re-examined. Taxonomicalanalyses resulted in the identification of a colony of S. siderea from offshore northern Bahia state. Following recentstudies, the occurrence of Caribbean siderastreids to western South Atlantic provides new criteria to assess intra- andinterpopulational morphological variation of the endemic S. stellata, refuting historical trends of synonymizations possiblybiased by long-term taxonomical misunderstandings

    Analysis of Infrasound Propagation at Regional Distance by Mining Explosion

    Seismic and acoustic recordings are particularly important to help identifying and locating industrial blasting sources. We have analyzed seismo-acoustic signals from mine blast for 2000 and 2005 in order to determine detection seismo-acoustic signals of explosion by seismic and infrasound stations. Several large mines in the region routinely generate explosions that are detected seismically and with infrasound. The mine range in distance from 40-500 km from the seismic, infrasound array. In last few years mining activity in Mongolia significantly increased. All events identified as quarry blasts have occurred during daytimes between 03:00 p.m. and 08:00 a.m. GMT and on weekdays from Monday to Friday. The corresponding number of infrasound detection is found to be dependent upon the regional weather condition, which is included air temperature, epicentral distance, wind force and velocity.
