Effective conductivity in association with model structure and spatial inhomogeneity of polymer/carbon black composites
The relationship between effective conductivity and cell structure of
polyethylene/carbon composites as well as between effective conductivity and
spatial distribution of carbon black are discussed. Following Yoshida's model
both structures can, in a way, be said to be intermediate between the well
known Maxwell-Garnett (MG) and Bruggeman (BR) limiting structures. Using TEM
photographs on composites with various carbon blacks we have observed that the
larger is Garncarek's inhomogeneity measure H of two-dimensional (2D)
representative distribution of the carbon black, the smaller is the effective
conductivity of the composite.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure
Field induced stationary state for an accelerated tracer in a bath
Our interest goes to the behavior of a tracer particle, accelerated by a
constant and uniform external field, when the energy injected by the field is
redistributed through collision to a bath of unaccelerated particles. A non
equilibrium steady state is thereby reached. Solutions of a generalized
Boltzmann-Lorentz equation are analyzed analytically, in a versatile framework
that embeds the majority of tracer-bath interactions discussed in the
literature. These results --mostly derived for a one dimensional system-- are
successfully confronted to those of three independent numerical simulation
methods: a direct iterative solution, Gillespie algorithm, and the Direct
Simulation Monte Carlo technique. We work out the diffusion properties as well
as the velocity tails: large v, and either large -v, or v in the vicinity of
its lower cutoff whenever the velocity distribution is bounded from below.
Particular emphasis is put on the cold bath limit, with scatterers at rest,

Hybrid LTA vehicle controllability as affected by buoyancy ratio
The zero and low speed controllability of heavy lift airships under various wind conditions as affected by the buoyancy ratio are investigated. A series of three hybrid LTA vehicls were examined, each having a dynamic thrust system comprised of four H-34 helicopters, but with buoyant envelopes of different volumes (and hence buoyancies), and with varying percentage of helium inflation and varying useful loads (hence gross weights). Buoyancy ratio, B, was thus examined varying from approximately 0.44 to 1.39. For values of B greater than 1.0, the dynamic thrusters must supply negative thrust (i.e. downward)
In vivo evaluation of operative torque generated by two Nickel-Titanium rotary instruments during root canal preparation
Objectives This in vivo study evaluated the operative torque and preparation time of ProTaper NEXT (Dentsply Maillefer; Ballaigues, Switzerland) and EdgeFile X7 (EdgeEndo; Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States) rotary systems during root canal preparation of maxillary premolars. Materials and Methods Ten double-rooted maxillary premolars with independent canals were selected. Each canal in each tooth was prepared with one of the rotary systems (n = 10), ProTaper NEXT or EdgeFile X7. The instruments were rotated at 300 rpm with maximum torque set at 2 N.cm using an electric motor (KaVo; Biberach, Germany) that automatically recorded torque values at every 1/10th of a second (ds). Statistical Analysis Operative torque (N.cm) and preparation time (s) of the first shaping instrument (size 17/.04) of both rotary systems were recorded and statistically compared using the Mann-Whiney U test with a significance level set at 5%. Results No instrument exhibited flute deformation or underwent intracanal failure. No differences were found between the instruments regarding the maximum (peak) torque values (p > 0.05). EdgeFile X7 17/.04 required significantly less preparation time (3.75 seconds interquartile range [IQR]: 3.2-9.0) than ProTaper NEXT X1 (15.45 seconds IQR: 8.35-21.1) (p < 0.05). The median operative torque values of ProTaper NEXT X1 (0.26 N.cm; IQR: 0.18-0.49) were significantly higher compared with EdgeFile X7 17/.04 (0.09 N.cm; IQR: 0.05-0.17) (p < 0.05). Conclusions Although no difference was found between the median peak torque values of ProTaper NEXT X1 and EdgeFile X7 17/.04 instruments, the operative torque and instrumentation time results were impacted by their different designs and alloys during clinical preparation of root canals
Fatigue resistance of new and used nickel-titanium rotary instruments: a comparative study

A length-dynamic Tonks gas theory of histone isotherms
We find exact solutions to a new one-dimensional (1D) interacting particle
theory and apply the results to the adsorption and wrapping of polymers (such
as DNA) around protein particles (such as histones). Each adsorbed protein is
represented by a Tonks gas particle. The length of each particle is a degree of
freedom that represents the degree of DNA wrapping around each histone.
Thermodynamic quantities are computed as functions of wrapping energy, adsorbed
histone density, and bulk histone concentration (or chemical potential); their
experimental signatures are also discussed. Histone density is found to undergo
a two-stage adsorption process as a function of chemical potential, while the
mean coverage by high affinity proteins exhibits a maximum as a function of the
chemical potential. However, {\it fluctuations} in the coverage are
concurrently maximal. Histone-histone correlation functions are also computed
and exhibit rich two length scale behavior.Comment: 5 pp, 3 fig
Kinetic models of ion transport through a nanopore
Kinetic equations for the stationary state distribution function of ions
moving through narrow pores are solved for a number of one-dimensional models
of single ion transport. Ions move through pores of length , under the
action of a constant external field and of a concentration gradient. The
interaction of single ions with the confining pore surface and with water
molecules inside the pore are modelled by a Fokker-Planck term in the kinetic
equation, or by uncorrelated collisions with thermalizing centres distributed
along the pore. The temporary binding of ions to polar residues lining the pore
is modelled by stopping traps or energy barriers. Analytic expressions for the
stationary ion current through the pore are derived for several versions of the
model, as functions of key physical parameters. In all cases, saturation of the
current at high fields is predicted. Such simple models, for which results are
analytic, may prove useful in the study of the current/voltage relations of ion
channels through membranes
Physics Analysis Expert PAX: First Applications
PAX (Physics Analysis Expert) is a novel, C++ based toolkit designed to
assist teams in particle physics data analysis issues. The core of PAX are
event interpretation containers, holding relevant information about and
possible interpretations of a physics event. Providing this new level of
abstraction beyond the results of the detector reconstruction programs, PAX
facilitates the buildup and use of modern analysis factories. Class structure
and user command syntax of PAX are set up to support expert teams as well as
newcomers in preparing for the challenges expected to arise in the data

Gene expression related to oxidative stress induced by herbicides in rice.
Herbicides are stressors that can have negative effects on plants. In Oryza sativa (L.), differential gene expression may be evalu-ated through real-time reverse transcription quantitative poly-merase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The aim of this study was to evaluate the stability of candidate reference genes and to quan-tify the relative expression of oxidative stress genes at different times (12, 24, 48, and 96 hours after treatment [HAT]) with penoxsulam, cyhalofop-butyl, and bentazon herbicides. Norm-Finder, BestKeeper, and GeNorm software and the compara-tive ∆Ct method were used to assess expression stability and to determine the RT-qPCR threshold values of the candidate reference genes. The UBQ5 gene was the most stable among the reference genes analyzed. The gene expression results showed upregulation of OsCAT and OsMnSOD1 genes at all times after herbicide application. The OsA PX 2 and OsGST3 genes showed increased gene expression at 12 and 96 HAT for all herbicides. The OsHO -1 gene had the most significant expression changes, with maximum expression levels at 24 HAT with bentazon and at 96 HAT with penoxsulam and cyhalofop-butyl. Emission patterns of neutral pions in 40 A MeV Ta+Au reactions
Differential cross sections of neutral pions emitted in 181Ta + 197Au
collisions at a beam energy of 39.5A MeV have been measured with the photon
spectrometer TAPS. The kinetic energy and transverse momentum spectra of
neutral pions cannot be properly described in the framework of the thermal
model, nor when the reabsorption of pions is accounted for in a
phenomenological model. However, high energy and high momentum tails of the
pion spectra can be well fitted through thermal distributions with unexpectedly
