Disclosure of HIV Infection: How do women decide to tell?
This descriptive study explores the phenomenon of disclosure of HIV infection by women. Specifically, we examined womenâs level of disclosure to various groups and how these disclosure decisions are made. The sample consisted of 322 HIV-infected women residing in the southern US. Participants were predominantly African-American, single women of reproductive age with yearly incomes less than $10 000. Data were collected at the first interview of a longitudinal study of reproductive decision making. Findings showed that the majority of the women had disclosed to some sex partners, close family and friends, and health care professionals. However, for a group of women, disclosure of HIV infection is a difficult issue supporting the need for health education and counseling. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis and revealed three major categories describing how women make disclosure decisions: full disclosure, criteria for disclosure and emotional disclosure. Quantitative analysis revealed few demographic differences among women in the three disclosure categories. These findings provide insight that can assist those working with HIV-infected women in helping them decide not only to whom they disclose, but how best to disclose
The Topology and Size of the Universe from the Cosmic Microwave Background
We study the possibility that the universe has compact topologies T^3, T^2 x
R^1, or S^1 x R^2 using the seven-year WMAP data. The maximum likelihood 95%
confidence intervals for the size L of the compact direction are 1.7 < L/L_0 <
2.1, 1.8 < L/L_0 < 2.0, 1.2 < L/L_0 < 2.1 for the three cases, respectively,
where L_0=14.4 Gpc is the distance to the last scattering surface. An infinite
universe is compatible with the data at 4.3 sigma. We find using a Bayesian
analysis that the most probable universe has topology T^2 x R^1, with
L/L_0=1.9.Comment: Additional checks, Monte-Carlo skies, and study of dipole

Noise Kernel and Stress Energy Bi-Tensor of Quantum Fields in Hot Flat Space and Gaussian Approximation in the Optical Schwarzschild Metric
Continuing our investigation of the regularization of the noise kernel in
curved spacetimes [N. G. Phillips and B. L. Hu, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 63}, 104001
(2001)] we adopt the modified point separation scheme for the class of optical
spacetimes using the Gaussian approximation for the Green functions a la
Bekenstein-Parker-Page. In the first example we derive the regularized noise
kernel for a thermal field in flat space. It is useful for black hole
nucleation considerations. In the second example of an optical Schwarzschild
spacetime we obtain a finite expression for the noise kernel at the horizon and
recover the hot flat space result at infinity. Knowledge of the noise kernel is
essential for studying issues related to black hole horizon fluctuations and
Hawking radiation backreaction. We show that the Gaussian approximated Green
function which works surprisingly well for the stress tensor at the
Schwarzschild horizon produces significant error in the noise kernel there. We
identify the failure as occurring at the fourth covariant derivative order.Comment: 21 pages, RevTeX
Young and Intermediate-age Distance Indicators
Distance measurements beyond geometrical and semi-geometrical methods, rely
mainly on standard candles. As the name suggests, these objects have known
luminosities by virtue of their intrinsic proprieties and play a major role in
our understanding of modern cosmology. The main caveats associated with
standard candles are their absolute calibration, contamination of the sample
from other sources and systematic uncertainties. The absolute calibration
mainly depends on their chemical composition and age. To understand the impact
of these effects on the distance scale, it is essential to develop methods
based on different sample of standard candles. Here we review the fundamental
properties of young and intermediate-age distance indicators such as Cepheids,
Mira variables and Red Clump stars and the recent developments in their
application as distance indicators.Comment: Review article, 63 pages (28 figures), Accepted for publication in

The source of A-type magmas in two contrasting settings: UâPb, LuâHf and ReâOs isotopic constraints
The sources of post-orogenic A-type magmas from two distinct geodynamic settings are compared. The end of the ca. 514â480 Ma Delamerian Orogeny, southeastern South Australia, was marked by ~ 10 Myr of bimodal A-type magmatism, driven by convective removal of thickened lithosphere. Initial Os and Hf isotope ratios record a heterogeneous lithospheric mantle source, with some input from aesthenospheric mantle. Mafic parental melts fractionated to produce the granites. In contrast, initial Os isotope ratios of the A-type magmas that comprise the ca. 1598â1583 Ma Mesoproterozoic Gawler Felsic Large Igneous Province, central South Australia, record a dominant evolved lower crust component. However, initial Hf isotope ratios from these samples are depleted, indicating a mantle source for lithophile elements. This voluminous, bimodal magmatism lasted for ~ 15 Myr, and ended the Wartakan Orogeny. In both cases the homogenisation of chemical (rheological) heterogeneities, inherited from terrain amalgamation and orogenic thickening, strengthened the lithosphere. The contemporaneous fusion of heterogeneous mantle ± crust may represent a common, stabilising influence on the lithospheric column regardless of tectono-magmatic setting
Unbound states in quantum heterostructures
We report in this review on the electronic continuum states of semiconductor Quantum Wells and Quantum Dots and highlight the decisive part played by the virtual bound states in the optical properties of these structures. The two particles continuum states of Quantum Dots control the decoherence of the excited electron â hole states. The part played by Auger scattering in Quantum Dots is also discussed
Astronomical Distance Determination in the Space Age: Secondary Distance Indicators
The formal division of the distance indicators into primary and secondary leads to difficulties in description of methods which can actually be used in two ways: with, and without the support of the other methods for scaling. Thus instead of concentrating on the scaling requirement we concentrate on all methods of distance determination to extragalactic sources which are designated, at least formally, to use for individual sources. Among those, the Supernovae Ia is clearly the leader due to its enormous success in determination of the expansion rate of the Universe. However, new methods are rapidly developing, and there is also a progress in more traditional methods. We give a general overview of the methods but we mostly concentrate on the most recent developments in each field, and future expectations. © 2018, The Author(s)
Early carboniferous brachiopod faunas from the Baoshan block, west Yunnan, southwest China
38 brachiopod species in 27 genera and subgenera are described from the Yudong Formation in the Shidian-Baoshan area, west Yunnan, southwest China. New taxa include two new subgenera: Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) and Brachythyrina (Longathyrina), and seven new species: Eomarginifera yunnanensis, Marginatia cylindrica, Unispirifer (Unispirifer) xiangshanensis, Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) wafangjieensis, Brachythyrina (Brachythyrina) transversa, Brachythyrina (Longathyrina) baoshanensis, and Girtyella wafangjieensis. Based on the described material and constraints from associated coral and conodont faunas, the age of the brachiopod fauna from the Yudon Formation is considered late Tournaisian (Early Carboniferous), with a possibility extending into earlyViseacutean.<br /
