    The glacial geomorphology of part of the Western Grampians of Scotland, with especial reference to the limits of the Loch Lomond Advance

    The limits of a large ice mass that built up in the western Grampians during the Loch Lomond Stadial were mapped using O.S. maps to scales of 1 : 10,000 and 1 : 25,000. The main forms of mapped glacial evidence comprised moraines, thick till, fluvioglacial landforms, erratics, boulder spreads, ice-moulded bedforms, striae and friction cracks. Outside the glacial limits the main types of mapped periglacial evidence included frost-riven bedrock, thick fossil screes, smooth debris-strewn slopes, tors, and solifluction lobes, terraces and sheets. 199 mapped trimlines, based on various forms of contrasting glacial and periglacial evidence, enabled the upper limits and form of the glaciers to be reconstructed, to varying degrees of accuracy, especially in the accumulation areas of the former glaciers. This information was supplemented by the evidence on 64 cols. The reconstructed form of the main ice mass indicates that it covered an area in excess of 2,000km (to the power of 2), that its total volume was ca. 460km (to the power of 3), and that maximum ice-shed altitudes of ca 700 - 750m O.D. were attained in the Glen Nevis-Rannoch Moor-Glen-Lyon areas. Equilibrium rim lines calculated for the main ice mass and for 17 independent corrie, valley and plateau glaciers indicate that firn lines rose from ca. 400m O.D. in the SW to +900m O.D. in the NE part of the study area. Trend surface analysis of corrie-floor altitudes, the spatial distribution of amounts of precipitation at the present time t and the equilibrium rim lines of the former Loch Lomond Advance glaciers, indicates a broad correspondence between these factors. Amounts of precipitation during the stadial on the mountains are estimated to have ranged from 3000 - 4000mm yr-1 in the SW to less than 1000mm yr-1 in the NE. Glacial evidence outside the limits of the Loch Lomond Advance suggest that the pattern of build-up and directions of ice-flow in ice-sheet times were very similar to those that occurred in the stadial. This implies that the climatic parameters that operated during the stadial were broadly similar to those that operated in earlier glacial periods

    Dairy foods and dairy protein consumption is inversely related to markers of adiposity in obese men and women

    A number of intervention studies have reported that the prevalence of obesity may be in part inversely related to dairy food consumption while others report no association. We sought to examine relationships between energy, protein and calcium consumption from dairy foods (milk, yoghurt, cheese, dairy spreads, ice-cream) and adiposity including body mass index (BMI), waist (WC) and hip circumference (HC), and direct measures of body composition using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (% body fat and abdominal fat) in an opportunistic sample of 720 overweight/obese Australian men and women. Mean (SD) age, weight and BMI of the population were 51 ± 10 year, 94 ± 18 kg and 32.4 ± 5.7 kg/m2, respectively. Reduced fat milk was the most commonly consumed dairy product (235 ± 200 g/day), followed by whole milk (63 ± 128 g/day) and yoghurt (53 ± 66 g/day). Overall dairy food consumption (g/day) was inversely associated with BMI, % body fat and WC (all p < 0.05). Dairy protein and dairy calcium (g/day) were both inversely associated with all adiposity measures (all p < 0.05). Yoghurt consumption (g/day) was inversely associated with % body fat, abdominal fat, WC and HC (all p < 0.05), while reduced fat milk consumption was inversely associated with BMI, WC, HC and % body fat (all p < 0.05). Within a sample of obese adults, consumption of dairy products, dairy protein, and calcium was associated with more favourable body composition

    Risk, resilience, and depressive symptoms in low-income African American fathers.

    OBJECTIVE: Parental depression influences family health but research on low-income African American fathers is limited. The primary goal of the present study was to examine the role of paternal risk factors and resilience resources in predicting depressive symptoms in the year after birth of a child in a sample of African American fathers. We hypothesized that paternal risk factors (low socioeconomic status [SES], perceived stress, negative life events, racism, avoidant coping style) and resources (social support, self-esteem, collective efficacy, approach-oriented coping style) would predict depressive symptoms in fathers at 1 year postbirth controlling for depressive symptoms at 1 month postbirth. METHOD: African American fathers (n = 296) of predominantly low SES from 5 U.S. regions were interviewed at 1 and 12 months after birth of a child regarding potential risk factors, resilience resources, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Depressive symptoms were low on average. However, hierarchical linear regression analyses revealed that avoidant coping style and experiences of racism predicted more depressive symptoms in fathers nearly a year after the birth of a child controlling for symptoms at 1 month. CONCLUSIONS: How fathers cope with stress and common everyday experiences of racism contributed to depressive symptoms in the year following birth of a child.     Monitoring Motor Symptoms During Activities of Daily Living in Individuals With Parkinson's Disease

    This literature review addressed wearable sensor systems to monitor motor symptoms in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) during activities of daily living (ADLs). Specifically, progress in monitoring tremor, freezing of gait, dyskinesia, bradykinesia, and hypokinesia was reviewed. Twenty-seven studies were found that met the criteria of measuring symptoms in a home or home-like setting, with some studies examining multiple motor disorders. Accelerometers, gyroscopes, and electromyography sensors were included, with some studies using more than one type of sensor. Five studies measured tremor, five studies examined bradykinesia or hypokinesia, thirteen studies included devices to measure dyskinesia or motor fluctuations, and ten studies measured akinesia or freezing of gait. Current sensor technology can detect the presence and severity of each of these symptoms; however, most systems require sensors on multiple body parts, which is challenging for remote or ecologically valid observation. Different symptoms are detected by different sensor placement, suggesting that the goal of detecting all symptoms with a reduced set of sensors may not be achievable. For the goal of monitoring motor symptoms during ADLs in a home setting, the measurement system should be simple to use, unobtrusive to the wearer and easy for an individual with PD to put on and take off. Machine learning algorithms such as neural networks appear to be the most promising way to detect symptoms using a small number of sensors. More work should be done validating the systems during unscripted and unconstrained ADLs rather than in scripted motions

    Therapeutic efficacy of boron neutron capture therapy mediated by boron-rich liposomes for oral cancer in the hamster cheek pouch model

    The application of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) mediated by liposomes containing 10B-enriched polyhedral borane and carborane derivatives for the treatment of head and neck cancer in the hamster cheek pouch oral cancer model is presented. These liposomes are composed of an equimolar ratio of cholesterol and 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, incorporating K[nido-7-CH3(CH2)15-7,8-C2B9H11] (MAC) in the bilayer membrane while encapsulating the hydrophilic species Na3[ae-B20H17NH3] (TAC) in the aqueous core. Unilamellar liposomes with a mean diameter of 83 nm were administered i.v. in hamsters. After 48 h, the boron concentration in tumors was 67 ± 16 ppm whereas the precancerous tissue contained 11 ± 6 ppm, and the tumor/normal pouch tissue boron concentration ratio was 10:1. Neutron irradiation giving a 5-Gy dose to precancerous tissue (corresponding to 21 Gy in tumor) resulted in an overall tumor response (OR) of 70% after a 4-wk posttreatment period. In contrast, the beam-only protocol gave an OR rate of only 28%. Once-repeated BNCT treatment with readministration of liposomes at an interval of 4, 6, or 8 wk resulted in OR rates of 70–88%, of which the complete response ranged from 37% to 52%. Because of the good therapeutic outcome, it was possible to extend the follow-up of BNCT treatment groups to 16 wk after the first treatment. No radiotoxicity to normal tissue was observed. A salient advantage of these liposomes was that only mild mucositis was observed in dose-limiting precancerous tissue with a sustained tumor response of 70–88%.Fil: Heber, Elisa Mercedes.
