Understanding higher education in further education colleges
This summary presents the main findings from research undertaken for the Department for
Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to understand the current nature of higher education
(HE) in further education colleges (FECs) in England. The study was carried out between
March 2011 and March 2012 by a team from the University of Sheffield and the Institute of
Education, University of London.
The research involved a range of qualitative and quantitative approaches, including: a
review of the relevant literature; an analysis of administrative data on provision and
participation; fieldwork in case-study FECs; interviews with managers in colleges and their
partner higher education institutions (HEIs); a questionnaire survey of students coupled
with in-class discussion groups; and interviews with employers.
An overview of the design and conduct of the study is given in Chapter 1, including its
aims, sources, methods and timetable. Methods of data collection and analysis are also
described in relevant chapters and appendices
Investigations of meltwater refreezing and density variations in the snowpack and firn within the percolation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet
The mass balance of polythermal ice masses is critically dependent on the proportion of surface-generated meltwater that subsequently refreezes in the snowpack and firn. In order to quantify this effect and to characterize its spatial variability, we measured near-surface (26%, resulting in a 32% increase in net accumulation. This 'seasonal densification' increased at lower elevations, rising to 47% 10 km closer to the ice-sheet margin at 1860 m a. s. l. Density/depth profiles from nine sites within 1 km2 at ∼1945 m a.s.l. reveal complex stratigraphies that change over short spatial scales and seasonally. We conclude that estimates of mass-balance change cannot be calculated solely from observed changes in surface elevation, but that near-surface densification must also be considered. However, predicting spatial and temporal variations in densification may not be straightforward. Further, the development of complex firn-density profiles both masks discernible annual layers in the near-surface firn and ice stratigraphy and is likely to introduce error into radar-derived estimates of surface elevation

Issues on the molecular-beam epitaxial growth of p-SiGe inverted-modulation-doped structures
The influence of boron segregation and silicon cap-layer thickness on two-dimensional hole gases (2-DHGs) has been investigated in Si/Si0.8Ge0.2/Si inverted-modulation-doped heterostructures grown by solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy. Boron segregation, which is significant in structures with small spacer layers, can be suppressed by growth interruption after the boron doping. How growth interruption affected the electrical properties of the 2-DHG and the boron doping profile as measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy are reported. We report also on the role played by the unpassivated silicon cap, and compare carrier transport at the normal and inverted interfaces

Cessation of mass drug administration for lymphatic filariasis in Zanzibar in 2006: was transmission interrupted?
BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is targeted for elimination through annual mass drug administration (MDA) for 4-6 years. In 2006, Zanzibar stopped MDA against LF after five rounds of MDA revealed no microfilaraemic individuals during surveys at selected sentinel sites. We asked the question if LF transmission was truly interrupted in 2006 when MDA was stopped. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In line with ongoing efforts to shrink the LF map, we performed the WHO recommended transmission assessment surveys (TAS) in January 2012 to verify the absence of LF transmission on the main Zanzibar islands of Unguja and Pemba. Altogether, 3275 children were tested on both islands and 89 were found to be CFA positive; 70 in Pemba and 19 in Unguja. The distribution of schools with positive children was heterogeneous with pronounced spatial variation on both islands. Based on the calculated TAS cut-offs of 18 and 20 CFA positive children for Pemba and Unguja respectively, we demonstrated that transmission was still ongoing in Pemba where the cut-off was exceeded. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated ongoing transmission of LF on Pemba in 2012. Moreover, we presented evidence from previous studies that LF transmission was also active on Unguja shortly after stopping MDA in 2006. Based on these observations the government of Zanzibar decided to resume MDA against LF on both islands in 2013
