    One Engineer and a Dog: Technological Change and Social Restructuring in Alabama\u27s Pulp and Paper Industry

    We apply a commodity systems analysis to examine a series of changes that are transforming Alabama\u27s pulp and paper industry. Alabama is a critical area for investigation because it lies at the heart of North America\u27s principle pulp and paper production zone. Industry restructuring is a complex process involving the reorganization of capital and corporate ownership, as well as changes in technologies, which affect the labor process. For example, a recent spate of corporate mergers has resulted in concentration of mill ownership and has accelerated the prevalence of sub-contracting. Indeed, the expansion of sub-contracting into new realms raises the fundamental question of what constitutes a core activity in this capital-intensive industry. The consolidation process has not proceeded in a unidirectional manner, however. For example, some corporations have expanded investments in forest land, while other firms have actively sought to divest themselves of direct ownership of such land, freeing capital for investment elsewhere. Placing Alabama mills in a broader regional context, we examine a set of environmental and economic pressures within the commodity system that have led to these changes

    Cultural Resources Survey for the Proposed Development of Water and Wastewater Infrastructure, Canutillo, El Paso County, Texas.

    On the 12th and 14th of June 2017, Versar Inc. performed a pedestrian survey for the proposed development of water and wastewater infrastructure footprint in Canutillo, Texas. The inventory followed the standards outlined under THC’s Archaeological Survey Standards for Texas and Rules of Practice and Procedure for the Antiquities Code of Texas for 55 acres of land in east El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. The survey parcel is positioned adjacent s on property owned by El Paso Water-Public Service Board, a sub-entity of the City of El Paso. The proposed impact to the municipal lands, which entails the construction of water and sewer infrastructure that will support commercial development, has generated the requirement for a Texas Antiquities Permit and cultural resource inventory. The project goal was to identify all prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in the survey parcel and make National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility recommendations for any newly discovered sites. The survey documented one archaeological site and 30 isolated occurrences; the isolated finds were fully documented and are not eligible for a NRHP recommendation. The one newly discovered site lacks geomorphic context and has been thoroughly recorded in-field; as a result, no further work is recommended for the APE

    Keeping It Classy: Classification of Live Fish and Ghost PIT Tags Detected With a Mobile PIT Tag Interrogation System Using an Innovative Analytical Approach

    The ability of passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag data to improve demographic parameter estimates has led to the rapid advancement of PIT tag systems. However, ghost tags create uncertainty about detected tag status (i.e., live fish or ghost tag) when using mobile interrogation systems. We developed a method to differentiate between live fish and ghost tags using a random forest classification model with a novel data input structure based on known fate PIT tag detections in the San Juan River (New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, USA). We used our model to classify detected tags with an overall error rate of 6.8% (1.6% ghost tags error rate and 21.8% live fish error rate). The important variables for classification were related to distance moved and response to monsoonal flood flows; however, habitat variables did not appear to influence model accuracy. Our results and approach allow the use of mobile detection data with confidence and allow for greater accuracy in movement, distribution, and habitat use studies, potentially helping identify influential management actions that would improve our ability to conserve and recover endangered fish

    Anchoring Communities Throughout COVID-19: Results from the 2020 Healthy Food in Health Care Survey in New England.

    Health Care Without Harm has been surveying their network of facilities since 2009. In 2020 the effort was expanded to include the full population health care facilities throughout New England. This new iteration of the Healthy Food in Health Care Survey focused on hospitals\u27 foodservice operations response to COVID-19 and contributions as anchor institutions in their communities. To supplement the survey results, three in-depth case studies demonstrate various experiences throughout the pandemic and highlight the motivations and ways these facilities successfully navigated the incredible strain put on the health care system while still being an essential community resource. The finding suggests that health care facilities played an important role in supporting their communities beyond procurement by establishing new initiatives that promoted food access and local producers. Based on the survey and case-study findings, recommendations and key takeaways for stakeholders hoping to increase their engagement as an anchor institution were developed. These recommendations highlight the resources used to support food access initiatives throughout COVID-19 and further develop relationships with local producers

    Estimating Population Abundance with a Mixture of Physical Capture and PIT Tag Antenna Detection Data

    The inclusion of passive interrogation antenna (PIA) detection data has promise to increase precision of population abundance estimates (Nˆ ). However, encounter probabilities are often higher for PIAs than for physical capture. If the difference is not accounted for, Nˆ may be biased. Using simulations, we estimated the magnitude of bias resulting from mixed capture and detection probabilities and evaluated potential solutions for removing the bias for closed capture models. Mixing physical capture and PIA detections (pdet) resulted in negative biases in Nˆ . However, using an individual covariate to model differences removed bias and improved precision. From a case study of fish making spawning migrations across a stream-wide PIA (pdet ≤ 0.9), the coefficient of variation (CV) of Nˆ declined 39%–82% when PIA data were included, and there was a dramatic reduction in time to detect a significant change in Nˆ . For a second case study, with modest pdet (≤0.2) using smaller PIAs, CV (Nˆ ) declined 4%–18%. Our method is applicable for estimating abundance for any situation where data are collected with methods having different capture–detection probabilities

    Survival of High-Risk Pediatric Neuroblastoma Patients In a Developing Country

    Little information is available about survival of high‐risk pediatric neuroblastoma patients in developing countries. We aimed to assess survival among high‐risk pediatric neuroblastoma patients in La Plata, Argentina. Individuals eligible for our cohort were aged4 yr at diagnosis, 54% were male, and 62% had adrenal neuroblastoma. We observed 18 deaths, and the median survival time of our study population was 1.7 yr. The five‐yr overall survival probability was 24% (95% CL: 10%, 41%). In contrast, five‐yr survival of high‐risk neuroblastoma patients ranges between 23% and 76% in developed countries. Survival among high‐risk neuroblastoma patients is generally poor regardless of geographic location, but our results illustrate dramatically worse survival for patients in a developing country. We speculate that the observed survival differences could be attenuated or eliminated with improvements in treatment and supportive care, but addressing these issues will require creative solutions because of resource limitations

    A web-based and mobile health social support intervention to promote adherence to inhaled asthma medications: randomized controlled trial

    Background: Online communities hold great potential as interventions for health, particularly for the management of chronic illness. The social support that online communities can provide has been associated with positive treatment outcomes, including medication adherence. There are few studies that have attempted to assess whether membership of an online community improves health outcomes using rigorous designs. Objective: Our objective was to conduct a rigorous proof-of-concept randomized controlled trial of an online community intervention for improving adherence to asthma medicine. Methods: This 9-week intervention included a sample of asthmatic adults from the United Kingdom who were prescribed an inhaled corticosteroid preventer. Participants were recruited via email and randomized to either an “online community” or “no online community” (diary) condition. After each instance of preventer use, participants (N=216) were required to report the number of doses of medication taken in a short post. Those randomized to the online community condition (n=99) could read the posts of other community members, reply, and create their own posts. Participants randomized to the no online community condition (n=117) also posted their medication use, but could not read others’ posts. The main outcome measures were self-reported medication adherence at baseline and follow-up (9 weeks postbaseline) and an objective measure of adherence to the intervention (visits to site). Results: In all, 103 participants completed the study (intervention: 37.8%, 39/99; control: 62.2%, 64/117). MANCOVA of self-reported adherence to asthma preventer medicine at follow-up was not significantly different between conditions in either intention-to-treat (P=.92) or per-protocol (P=.68) analysis. Site use was generally higher in the control compared to intervention conditions. Conclusions: Joining an online community did not improve adherence to preventer medication for asthma patients. Without the encouragement of greater community support or more components to sustain engagement over time, the current findings do not support the use of an online community to improve adherence
