The Economic and Demographic Determinants of Oregon Lottery Sales

    Get PDF
Understanding the determinants of Oregon lottery sales is important, as lottery revenues fund a variety of government programs. Our research uses Oregon county-level per capita income data collected from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and county-level demographic data collected from GeoFred, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and Portland State Population Demographics to estimate how economic and demographic factors impact lottery sales in Oregon. The results indicate that the income elasticity of demand for the Oregon lottery is 1, implying that lottery sales represent a constant share of Oregonians’ incomes. Additionally, we find that lottery sales vary as a function of gender, age, and education levels

The Christological Remnants within Eucharistic Prayers

    Get PDF
This paper explores the development of Christology in the early Church concluding with a look at Angel Christology in the Roman Canon and Logos Christology in The Prayers of Sarapion of Thmuis. A lack of Christological precision in early Christian praying has anachronistically led modern scholars to question the orthodoxy of early prayers. This paper argues that just as liturgical scholars have long realized that the development of liturgy moved from diversity to uniformity, so too this is the case with theology. The movement to tighten the borders of orthodoxy has led to liturgical standardization. Just as the dating of liturgical sources can be based on philological methods, their dating can also be approximated through an analysis of the theological ideas present within their text. It is the Christological and pneumatological remnants present within a prayer’s epiclesis that provides crucial insights to a prayer’s provenance, dating, theology, and orthodoxy. This paper seeks to contextualize two Eucharistic prayers amid now obscure Christologies which were prominent in the first few centuries of the early Church

Phosphorous Limitation and Trophic Status in Limestone Quarry Lakes, Dade County, FL

While limestone quarry lakes have existed in South Florida for many years, only recently have they received serious scrutiny. A thorough understanding of the trophic dynamics of these lakes has yet to be achieved. Questions have arisen as to the value of these lakes for such purposes as water reclamation, conservation, and recreational use. The purpose of this study was twofold, 1) to investigate the trophic processes within these lakes with special regard to phosphorus limitation, and 2) to help provide a better understanding of the linmology of these lakes, specifically through the quantification and identification of the invertebrate life and water quality analysis. The pH in the four lakes in this study averaged above 8.0 over a two year period from January 1994 to December 1995. The surface dissolved oxygen averaged 7.1 mg/L during the same period. Chlorophyll-a averaged 1.1 mg/m3 during a six month period from April through September 1995. Surface total phosphorus levels averaged 0.012 mg/L (0.39 ug-at L·1) over the same six month period, which is not indicative of highly productive systems. While phytop1ankton were abundant during the two year period, the populations were dominated by very small forms of chlorophytes and cyanobacteria. The average alkalinity was high (150.4 mg CaCO3/L, 3.0 meq L-1), which is not surprising considering the geochemistry of these lakes. However, alkalinity was poorly correlated with the trophic measures (chlorophyll a, total phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase activity and orthophosphate). To investigate phosphorus limitation in these lakes, the specific activity of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase, secreted by the phytoplankton, was studied over the course of 6 months and during a 24 hour period. The assumption was that if these lakes were phosphorus limited, then alkaline phosphatase activity should vary inversely with orthophosphate. Furthermore, chlorophyll-a should be positively correlated with orthophosphate. In the six-month study the Jatter relationship was found to be significant (Spearman r= 0.69; p= 0.0002, n= 24). Alkaline phosphatase activity and orthophosphate showed a nearly significant, inverse relationship (Spearman r= -0.402, p= 0.051, n= 24). Regression analysis from the diel study also showed a significant inverse relationship between alkaline phosphatase activity and orthophosphate (r= 0-.548, p= 0.033, n= 12). Alkaline phosphatase activity appears to provide a simple means of assaying the degree of phosphate limitation and the trophic state of these lakes

The Development of the Epiclesis: Alexandrian or Syrian?

    Get PDF
This paper explores the origins and development of the epiclesis in Eucharistic prayers. It begins by looking at the pneumatological developments around the time of the First Council of Nicaea and the First Council of Constantinople in the 4th century. It then turns to the work of influential scholars in the field to try and present a status quaestionis on the epiclesis which seeks to answer the questions: 1) How did it develop?, 2) Where did it develop?, and 3) Why did it develop? The paper ends by affirming the uncertainty of scholarship on the answers to these questions, while at the same time advocating for probable Syrian leadership in the development of the epiclesis

A History and Analysis of the Missel Romain pour les Diocese du Zaire

    Get PDF
This paper is an in-depth study of the Zaire Rite, which was developed after the Second Vatican Council in response to the call for greater inculturation. It explores the context in Rome, Africa, and the Congo that allowed such a radical revision of the Roman Rite to be approved. This paper looks at the structural changes that were made and the reasons for those changes while also exploring the differences in celebration between the Zaire Rite and the Roman Rite. The paper concludes with the implications of this rite for the Roman Rite and the Church today

Christ, the Meeting Point of Sacramental and Trinitarian Theology

This paper explores the relationship between the liturgical life of the Church and the operation of the Trinity in the economy of grace through the work of Fr. Edward Kilmartin. Kilmartin sought to better explain how humanity’s relationship with God through prayer and the sacraments was established. For him, theologians’ understanding of the Trinity in what has become known as the procession model allowed for the katabatic flow of grace to humanity but failed to explain the anabatic flow of grace from humanity back up to God. This paper looks at the complementary model, the bestowal model, that Kilmartin developed to explain how liturgy, the sacraments, and ultimately a life of grace is a participation in the life of the Trinity

This time it’s different: Turbo-charging regulatory cooperation in TTIP. Paper No. 7 in the CEPS-CTR project ‘TTIP in the Balance’ and CEPS Special Report No. 110/June 2015

Regulatory cooperation is both one of the most ambitious and contentious parts of the EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations. In this paper, having identified the many levels of international regulatory cooperation, we show that TTIP regulatory cooperation will be significant, but not ambitious, while political and legal limits on cooperation in both the EU and the US minimise the concerns. For transatlantic regulatory cooperation to work, it must accept these political and legal constraints, build trust and confidence among counterpart regulators so they see that their transatlantic partner can help them do their work better, and provide tools to help regulators on both sides make informed decisions while retaining their regulatory autonomy and accountability to their politicians and citizens. A TTIP that provides these tools – and some more detailed instruments to that effect – will be more ambitious than previous trade agreements, and should, over the longer term, provide both the economic and regulatory benefits that the two sides envisage. The paper incorporates comparisons with the relevant chapters of recent FTAs the US and the EU have concluded, so as to clarify the approaches and degrees of ambition in this area. This comparison suggests that the TTIP regulatory cooperation will probably be more ambitious in terms of commitments and have a wider scope than any of these FTAs
