    Crystallization dynamics of a single layer complex plasma

    We report a series of complex (dusty) plasma experiments, aimed at the study of the detailed time evolution of the re-crystallisation process following a rapid quench of a two dimensional dust liquid. The experiments were accompanied by large-scale (million particle) molecular dynamics simulations, assuming Yukawa type inter-particle interaction. Both experiment and simulation show a tα\propto t^\alpha (power law) dependence of the linear crystallite domain size as measured by the bond-order correlation length, translational correlation length, dislocation (defect) density, and a direct size measurement algorithm. The results show two stages of order formation: on short time-scales individual particle motion dominates; this is a fast process characterized by α=0.93±0.1\alpha=0.93\pm0.1. At longer time-scales, small crystallites undergo collective rearrangement, merging into bigger ones, resulting in a smaller exponent α=0.38±0.06\alpha=0.38\pm0.06.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Advances in the floral structural characterization of the major subclades of Malpighiales, one of the largest orders of flowering plants

    Background and Aims Malpighiales are one of the largest angiosperm orders and have undergone radical systematic restructuring based on molecular phylogenetic studies. The clade has been recalcitrant to molecular phylogenetic reconstruction, but has become much more resolved at the suprafamilial level. It now contains so many newly identified clades that there is an urgent need for comparative studies to understand their structure, biology and evolution. This is especially true because the order contains a disproportionally large diversity of rain forest species and includes numerous agriculturally important plants. This study is a first broad systematic step in this endeavour. It focuses on a comparative structural overview of the flowers across all recently identified suprafamilial clades of Malpighiales, and points towards areas that desperately need attention. Methods The phylogenetic comparative analysis of floral structure for the order is based on our previously published studies on four suprafamilial clades of Malpighiales, including also four related rosid orders (Celastrales, Crossosomatales, Cucurbitales, Oxalidales). In addition, the results are compiled from a survey of over 3000 publications on macrosystematics, floral structure and embryology across all orders of the core eudicots. Key Results Most new suprafamilial clades within Malpighiales are well supported by floral structural features. Inner morphological structures of the gynoecium (i.e. stigmatic lobes, inner shape of the locules, placentation, presence of obturators) and ovules (i.e. structure of the nucellus, thickness of the integuments, presence of vascular bundles in the integuments, presence of an endothelium in the inner integument) appear to be especially suitable for characterizing suprafamilial clades within Malpighiales. Conclusions Although the current phylogenetic reconstruction of Malpighiales is much improved compared with earlier versions, it is incomplete, and further focused phylogenetic and morphological studies are needed. Once all major subclades of Malpighiales are elucidated, more in-depth studies on promising structural features can be conducted. In addition, once the phylogenetic tree of Malpighiales, including closely related orders, is more fully resolved, character optimization studies will be possible to reconstruct evolution of structural and biological features within the orde

    Understanding wind turbine power converter reliability under realistic wind conditions

    The reliability of wind turbine power converters is crucial for analyzing wind energy project costs, and for estimating maintenance and downtime. The published literature in this field relies on evaluating the reliability effect of wind speed to estimate the converter lifetime. However, this paper demonstrates that wind turbulence intensity, which has not been widely considered in similar reliability analyses, shows a significant impact on converter lifetime. This paper uses 821 10‐min wind speed time series sampled at 1 Hz on the two most commonly deployed wind turbine converter topologies: the two‐level voltage source and the three‐level neutral point clamped. Electromechanical and thermal modelling, combined with statistical analysis shows that mean wind speed and turbulence intensity both impact the lifetime of both converter topologies. However, the paper estimates that the three‐level converter can operate 2.4 to 4.0 times longer than the two‐level converter depending on the operating wind speed and turbulence intensity

    Passive, broadband and low-frequency suppression of laser amplitude noise to the shot-noise limit using hollow-core fibre

    We use hollow-core fibre to preserve the spectrum and temporal profile of picosecond laser pulses in CBD to suppress 2.6 dB of amplitude noise at MHz noise frequencies, to within 0.01 dB of the shot-noise limit. We provide an enhanced version of the CBD scheme that concatenates circuits to suppress over multiple frequencies and over broad frequency ranges --- we perform a first demonstration that reduces total excess amplitude noise, between 2 - 6 MHz, by 85%. These demonstrations enable passive, broad-band, all-guided fibre laser technology operating at the shot-noise limit.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Neutral Hydrogen Associated with NGC 7129

    Observations of the environment of the star-forming region NGC 7129 obtained with an angular resolution of 1' in the 21 cm line of H I are described. Two features of the image are extensively discussed: (1) a ring of H I emission about 30' in extent and (2) a relatively dense concentration of H I with unusually wide line profiles positionally coincident with the B star BD +65°1638. The H I ring is consistent with photodissociation of H2 by the interstellar UV radiation field at the surface of an extended molecular cloud in which both BD +65°1638 and NGC 7129 are situated. We further show that BD +65°1638 appears to be an unusual example of a "dissociating star" surrounded by an extensive region of photodissociated H2 and accompanied by a small H II region. The derived spectral type (B2.5) and the absolute magnitude for BD +65°1638 further suggest that the latter is very close to the birthline. The very young stellar age implied by the parameters of the H I region, considerably less than 104 yr, is discussed, and the properties of the H I region are compared with those of the prototype for this rare class of objects. We discuss both aspects within the context of star formation in NGC 7129

    Effect of ovarian suppression with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist on glucose disposal and insulin secretion

    Several lines of evidence suggest that ovarian hormones influence glucose homeostasis, although their exact role in humans has not been clearly defined. In the present study, we sought to test the hypothesis that ovarian hormones regulate glucose homeostasis by examining the effect of pharmacologically induced ovarian hormone deficiency on glucose disposal and insulin secretion. Young, healthy women with regular menstrual patterns were studied during the follicular and luteal phases of their cycle at baseline and after 2 mo of treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa; n = 7) or placebo (n = 6). Using hyperglycemic clamps, in combination with stable isotope-labeled (i.e., (13)C and (2)H) glucose tracers, we measured glucose disposal and insulin secretion. Additionally, we assessed body composition and regional fat distribution using radiologic imaging techniques as well as glucoregulatory hormones. Ovarian hormone suppression with GnRHa did not alter body composition, abdominal fat distribution, or thigh tissue composition. There was no effect of ovarian suppression on total, oxidative, or nonoxidative glucose disposal expressed relative to plasma insulin level. Similarly, no effect of ovarian hormone deficiency was observed on first- or second-phase insulin secretion or insulin clearance. Finally, ovarian hormone deficiency was associated with an increase in circulating adiponectin levels but no change in leptin concentration. Our findings suggest that a brief period of ovarian hormone deficiency in young, healthy, eugonadal women does not alter glucose disposal index or insulin secretion, supporting the conclusion that ovarian hormones play a minimal role in regulating glucose homeostasis. Our data do, however, support a role for ovarian hormones in the regulation of plasma adiponectin levels

    'I would rather die': reasons given by 16-year-olds for not continuing their study of mathematics

    Improving participation rates in specialist mathematics after the subject ceases to be compulsory at age 16 is part of government policy in England. This article provides independent and recent support for earlier findings concerning reasons for non- participation, based on free response and closed items in a questionnaire with a sample of over 1500 students in 17 schools, close to the moment of choice. The analysis supports findings that perceived difficulty and lack of confidence are important reasons for students not continuing with mathematics, and that perceived dislike and boredom, and lack of relevance, are also factors. There is a close relationship between reasons for non-participation and predicted grade, and a weaker relation to gender. An analysis of the effects of schools, demonstrates that enjoyment is the main factor differentiating schools with high and low participation indices. Building on discussion of these findings, ways of improving participation are briefly suggested

    Undiagnosed dementia in primary care: A record linkage study

    BackgroundThe number of people living with dementia is greater than the number with a diagnosis of dementia recorded in primary care. This suggests that a significant number are living with dementia that is undiagnosed. Little is known about this group and there is little quantitative evidence regarding the consequences of diagnosis for people with dementia.ObjectivesThe aims of this study were to (1) describe the population meeting the criteria for dementia but without diagnosis, (2) identify predictors of being diagnosed and (3) estimate the effect of diagnosis on mortality, move to residential care, social participation and well-being.DesignA record linkage study of a subsample of participants (n = 598) from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study II (CFAS II) (n = 7796), an existing cohort study of the population of England aged ≥ 65 years, with standardised validated assessment of dementia and consent to access medical records.Data sourcesData on dementia diagnoses from each participant’s primary care record and covariate and outcome data from CFAS II.SettingA population-representative cohort of people aged ≥ 65 years from three regions of England between 2008 and 2011.ParticipantsA total of 598 CFAS II participants, which included all those with dementia who consented to medical record linkage (n = 449) and a stratified sample without dementia (n = 149).Main outcome measuresThe main outcome was presence of a diagnosis of dementia in each participant’s primary care record at the time of their CFAS II assessment(s). Other outcomes were date of death, cognitive performance scores, move to residential care, hospital stays and social participation.ResultsAmong people with dementia, the proportion with a diagnosis in primary care was 34% in 2008–11 and 44% in 2011–13. In both periods, a further 21% had a record of a concern or a referral but no diagnosis. The likelihood of having a recorded diagnosis increased with severity of impairment in memory and orientation, but not with other cognitive impairment.
