    Get PDF
The design requirements are given for magnetic oxide coated, electronic data processing tape, wound on reels. Magnetic recording tape types covered by this specification are intended for use on digital tape transports using the Non-Return-to-Zero-change-on-ones (NRZI) recording method for recording densities up to and including 800 characters per inch (cpi) and the Phase-Encoding (PE) recording method for a recording density of 1600 cpi

Orbital Spacecraft Consumables Resupply System (OSCRS). Volume 3: Program Cost Estimate

    Get PDF
A cost analysis for the design, development, qualification, and production of the monopropellant and bipropellant Orbital Spacecraft Consumable Resupply System (OSCRS) tankers, their associated avionics located in the Orbiter payload bay, and the unique ground support equipment (GSE) and airborne support equipment (ASE) required to support operations is presented. Monopropellant resupply for the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) in calendar year 1991 is the first defined resupply mission with bipropellant resupply missions expected in the early to mid 1990's. The monopropellant program estimate also includes contractor costs associated with operations support through the first GRO resupply mission

The Effect of GnRH at Time of Insemination on Initiation of LH Pulses and Subsequent Progesterone

Research has indicated that luteinizing hormone (LH) pulses play a vital role in corpus luteum (CL) formation and subsequent progesterone concentrations. Therefore, our objectives were to determine: 1) when LH pulses begin following onset of estrus, 2) the effect an injection of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) would have on initiation of LH pulses, and 3) the effect LH pulse initiation had on subsequent plasma progesterone concentrations. Cows were synchronized with the Select Synch + Controlled Internal Drug Releasing device (CIDR) protocol (d -7 100 μg GnRH and CIDR; d 0 25 mg prostaglandin (PG) and removal of CIDR; estrus detected with HeatWatch). Following detection in estrus, a jugular catheter was inserted in each cow (n = 10). Based on initiation of estrus, cows were allotted into two treatments: 1) GnRH given 12 h (12.5 ± 1.2 h) after the initiation of estrus (n = 5; 100 μg) and 2) Control (n = 5). Blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals for 6 h at 12 h (bleed 1), 26 h (bleed 2), 40 h (bleed 3), 54 h (bleed 4), and 68 h (bleed 5) after the onset of estrus. The interval from onset of estrus to bleed 1 and ovulation was similar between treatments. The GnRH cows tended to have a greater area under the LH curve for bleed 1 compared to control cows. No differences were detected in bleeds 2, 3, 4, or 5. Average concentration of LH for GnRH cows in bleed 1 tended to be greater than control. No differences were detected in bleeds 2, 3, 4, or 5. No differences were detected in pulse frequency between treatments in bleeds 1, 3, 4, or 5, but in bleed 2, control tended to have more pulses than GnRH (2.5 ± 0.5 vs 1.4 ± 0.4). The GnRH-treated cows tended to have greater subsequent progesterone concentrations; however, GnRH-treated cows that had no LH pulses during bleed 2 had lower progesterone concentrations than cows with pulses (control or GnRH). In summary, injecting cows with GnRH approximately 12 h after the onset of estrus tended to reduce LH pulses 26-32 h following initiation of estrus, and elimination of LH pulses between 26-32 h resulted in decreased concentrations of progesterone during the subsequent cycle

    Understanding the truth about subjectivity

Results of two experiments show children’s understanding of diversity in personal preference is incomplete. Despite acknowledging diversity, in Experiment 1(N=108), 6- and 8-year-old children were less likely than adults to see preference as a legitimate basis for personal tastes and more likely to say a single truth could be found about a matter of taste. In Experiment 2 (N=96), 7- and 9-year-olds were less likely than 11- and 13-yearolds to say a dispute about a matter of preference might not be resolved. These data suggest that acceptance of the possibility of diversity does not indicate an adult-like understanding of subjectivity. An understanding of the relative emphasis placed on objective and subjective factors in different contexts continues to develop into adolescence

A pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial of an educational intervention for GPs in the assessment and management of depression

Background. General practitioners (GPs) can be provided with effective training in the skills to manage depression. However, it remains uncertain whether such training achieves health gain for their patients. Method. The study aimed to measure the health gain from training GPs in skills for the assessment and management of depression. The study design was a cluster randomized controlled trial. GP participants were assessed for recognition of psychological disorders, attitudes to depression, prescribing patterns and experience of psychiatry and communication skills training. They were then randomized to receive training at baseline or the end of the study. Patients selected by GPs were assessed at baseline, 3 and 12 months. The primary outcome was depression status, measured by HAM-D. Secondary outcomes were psychiatric symptoms (GHQ-12) quality of life (SF-36), satisfaction with consultations, and health service use and costs. Results. Thirty-eight GPs were recruited and 36 (95%) completed the study. They selected 318 patients, of whom 189 (59%) were successfully recruited. At 3 months there were no significant differences between intervention and control patients on HAM-D, GHQ-12 or SF-36. At 12 months there was a positive training effect in two domains of the SF-36, but no differences in HAM-D, GHQ-12 or health care costs. Patients reported trained GPs as somewhat better at listening and understanding but not in the other aspects of satisfaction. Conclusions. Although training programmes may improve GPs' skills in managing depression, this does not appear to translate into health gain for depressed patients or the health service

A bright nanowire single photon source based on SiV centers in diamond

    Get PDF
The practical implementation of many quantum technologies relies on the development of robust and bright single photon sources that operate at room temperature. The negatively charged silicon-vacancy (SiV-) color center in diamond is a possible candidate for such a single photon source. However, due to the high refraction index mismatch to air, color centers in diamond typically exhibit low photon out-coupling. An additional shortcoming is due to the random localization of native defects in the diamond sample. Here we demonstrate deterministic implantation of Si ions with high conversion efficiency to single SiV- centers, targeted to fabricated nanowires. The co-localization of single SiV- centers with the nanostructures yields a ten times higher light coupling efficiency than for single SiV- centers in bulk diamond. This enhanced photon out-coupling, together with the intrinsic scalability of the SiV- creation method, enables a new class of devices for integrated photonics and quantum science.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
