    Atomicity and non-anonymity in population-like games for the energy efficiency of hybrid-power HetNets

The paper proposes a novel distributed control scheme inspired by population games and designed considering both atomicity and non-anonymity – i.e., describing the individual decisions of each agent. The controller performance is considered from an energy–efficiency perspective, which requires the guarantee of appropriate qualityof-service (QoS) levels according to renewable energy availability. The efficiency of the proposed scheme is compared with other heuristic and optimal alternatives in two simulation scenarios.     β-thalassemia Intermedia In A Brazilian Patient With - 101 (c > T) And Codon 39 (c > T) Mutations

    Context: We verified molecular alterations in a 72-year-old Brazilian male patient with a clinical course of homozygous β-thalassemia intermedia, who had undergone splenectomy and was surviving without regular blood transfusions. The blood cell count revealed microcytic and hypochromic anemia (hemoglobin = 6.5 g/dl, mean cell volume = 74 ft, mean cell hemoglobin = 24 pg) and hemoglobin electrophoresis showed fetal hemoglobin = 1.3%, hemoglobin A 2 = 6.78% and hemoglobin A = 79.4%. Objective: To identify mutations in a patient with the symptoms of β-thalassemia intermedia. Design: Molecular inquiry into the mutations possibly responsible for the clinical picture described. Setting: The structural molecular biology and genetic engineering center of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Campinas, Brazil. Procedures: DNA extraction was performed on the patient's blood samples. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done using five specific primers that amplified exons and the promoter region of the β globin gene. The samples were sequenced and then analyzed via computer programs. Results: Two mutations that cause the disease were found: -101 (C > T) and codon 39 (C > T).     D* Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel D+(D0Kπ+)π+D^{*+}\to (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+) \pi^+ (+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The e+pe^+p cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with 5<Q2<100GeV25<Q^2<100 GeV^2 and y<0.7y<0.7 is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region {1.3<pT(D±)<9.01.3<p_T(D^{*\pm})<9.0 GeV and η(D±)<1.5| \eta(D^{*\pm}) |<1.5}. Differential cross sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), η(D±),W\eta(D^{*\pm}), W and Q2Q^2 are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and η\eta(D^{*\pm}), the charm contribution F2ccˉ(x,Q2)F_2^{c\bar{c}}(x,Q^2) to the proton structure function is determined for Bjorken xx between 2 \cdot 104^{-4} and 5 \cdot 103^{-3}.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figure

    Observation of Scaling Violations in Scaled Momentum Distributions at HERA

    Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events over a large range of xx and Q2Q^2 using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the scaled momentum, xpx_p, with Q2,Q^2, in the range 10 to 1280 GeV2GeV^2, has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame.     Resource-use Patterns In Swidden Farming Communities: Implications For The Resilience Of Cassava Diversity

    Resource-use patterns, especially through exchanges among farmers, may ultimately confer resilience to the local agrobiodiversity. We investigated the use of cassava ethnovarieties by swidden farming communities in Brazil, exploring the structure of networks depicting farmers and the varieties they cultivate. The emergent nested resource-use pattern indicated that all farmers shared a core of top-ranked ethnovarieties (most common/abundant) while some farmers also cultivate rarer varieties. This pattern may result of individual preferences. Due to the current loss of interest and cultivation area for traditional agriculture, we simulated the extinction of crop fields to evaluate whether nestedness conferred robustness to cassava diversity. The diversity of ethnovarieties of cassava tended to be conserved when farmers were randomly removed from the network than when we preferentially removed farmers with more diverse crop fields. Stem cuttings of ethnovarieties are commonly exchanged among farmers, thus the extinction of ethnovarieties within crop fields could be restored.     Background and Objective: Periodontal disease corresponds to a group of lesions that affect the tooth-supporting tissues present in the dental follicle. Although bacterial plaque is important, the immune response also contributes to the destruction of periodontal tissues. Diabetes mellitus is closely associated with the development, progression and severity of periodontal disease because it not only affects extracellular matrix organization but also the tissue response to inflammation. The objective of the present investigation was to study the influence of diabetes on experimental periodontal disease by evaluating the degradation of extracellular matrix through the analysis of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 expression and activity, using immunofluorescence, zymography and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Material and Methods: Wistar rats were divided into normal and diabetic groups and evaluated 0, 15 and 30 d after the induction of periodontal disease by ligature. Results: MMP-2 and -9 were detected in epithelial cells, in the blood vessel endothelium and in connective tissue cells. The same profile of enzymatic expression of MMP-2 and -9 was observed in normal and diabetic animals, with a peak in activity at day 15 of inflammation. However, in diabetic animals, MMP-2 gelatinolytic activity was reduced after the inflammatory stimulus, whereas that of MMP-9 was increased. MMP-2 gene expression decreased with inflammation in both normal groups and groups with diabetes. In contrast, MMP-9 expression increased in normal animals and decreased in diabetic animals after inflammation.
