Aggregation in activity-based costing and the short run activity cost function
This paper first identifies the conditions that support the construction of an aggregate output, i.e. the conditions under which a single measure of output can be used to accurately determine cost object incremental costs within a cost pool. This is a significant issue which has not been fully explored in the management accounting literature. Two conditions are jointly necessary and sufficient. The first one is the linear homogeneity property associated with each cost object production function. This condition ensures that costs are linear with output, which is essential if the cost reported by an activity-based costing (ABC) system is also to be a relevant cost for decision?making. The second is that all (cost object) cost driver rates for a given cost pool are equal. This condition guarantees that the cost function at a given activity depends on only one cost driver. The short run structure of ABC is also introduced. It is shown that the fundamental ABC property of linearly between costs and output does not generally hold in the short run, even assuming that technologies are linearly homogeneous. Only under very particular conditions, such as when inputs are combined in completely fixed proportions, are short run costs linear with output.activity-based costing; aggregate output; cost driver; multi-output technologies; short run activity cost function
How to control market power of activity centers? A theoretical model showing the advantages of implementing competition within organizations
One important issue in firms' governance is how to incentives so that activity centres can become more efficient. In this paper, we first introduce an agency contract where the salary of the manager of an activity centre that produces an intermediate product is dependent of its performance. Secondly, we add competition within the organization. This latter point is new in the literature. We then develop a "static analysis" comparing a firm that has only one activity centre producing an intermediate product with another firm that has two activity centres producing the same intermediate product, in a context where the technology manifests increasing returns to scale. We conclude that the introduction of internal competition makes the firm globally more efficient, even though it cannot fully explore the existence of increasing returns to scale.

In order to accommodate the ever-growing demand for higher transmission
rates, the next generation of mobile telecommunications (5G) will need
larger bandwidths, as well as, new frequencies with available spectrum capable
of accommodate such bandwidths. The rise in frequency is being
pointed out as a solution for this problem, however, the low coverage areas
presented by these frequency bands (mmWave) will require a new way of
implementing base stations. Those, in their turn, will exist in higher numbers
and closer together. It is where that the new radio access network
architecture, C-RAN, may allow for the ful lment of these requirements,
besides also allowing for the reduction in cost of each base station as well
as providing an increase in its energy e ciency.
This dissertation aims to create a point-to-point optical link based on All-
Digital Transmitters (ADT) capable of being used for data transmission
in the fronthaul. Taking advantage of recent developments in ADT, it
is now possible to create one with large bandwidths. Besides, the eld
programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have been providing each time higher
processing capacity using each time less energy, making the nal product
cheaper and more e cient. Recurring to delta-sigma modulation ( M), a
reduction in the complexity of the remote radio head (RRH) can be achieved.
In this work the optical link that will be used to transport the data through
the fronthaul will be based on an SFP. However, other techniques of radio
over bre (RoF) can be used to enable, for example, optical upconversion.
From the conclusion of this work, a point-to-point optical link based on an
ADT was achieved with an Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) always lower
than 5%. Also, from this work, two optical upconversions were developed
with an output frequency range from 27 GHz up to 63 GHz.De modo a acompanhar a sempre crescente exigĂȘncia de maiores taxas
( M) no ADT poderĂĄ reduzir consideravelmente a complexidade

a diferenças no nĂvel de numeracia; Estimating, weighing and measuring food consumption: An exploratory study of the
mental representation and subjective quantification of red meat consumption in a
sample of elderly people.
Abstract:
Following the recommendations for healthy eating habits, issued by the competent
authorities, is essential in promoting health in the elderly population. However, little is
known about how older people understand the information communicated and
specifically, the numeric format of recommended quantities. With the goal of
understanding the mental representation of quantities and the effects of numerical
information communicated, in deliberative processes, an exploratory study was
conducted with a sample of 76 elderly. This was based on diary data of food
consumption and other quantitative and qualitative data collection, based on
recommendations of red meat consumption. The results showed that an information
format that is inconsistent with how quantities are mentally represented can have
consequences in the elaboration/deliberation and possibly act as a barrier to
implementing recommendations into behavior. Moreover, individual differences in
elaboration/deliberation were associated with differences in levels of numeracy

Extreme hot weather events such as heat waves have been an increasingly growing
concern for health agencies and authorities over the last years, mainly due to its severe impacts
on human health and wellbeing. In a scenario of climate change, heat waves are expected to
become more frequent, intense, and long lasting, with greater probability of public health crisis
emerging as result of changing environmental factors. As such, better understanding of how
people perceive these events is needed to promote protection intentions and behaviours and
facilitate current and future institutional responses.
In this context, the current Doctoral Thesis aimed to explore and better understand the
perceived demands associated with heat waves and the perceived resources to cope with these,
the effects that cognitive, affective, and sociodemographic factors have on such perceptions,
and their combined effects on heat protection intentions.
After an Introduction in Chapter I, in Chapter II, we report the development of a theorydriven framework to collect and code expressions of demands and resources perceptions in the
context of heat waves, allowing the identification of these perceptions, as well as potential
misconceptions held by participants in Portugal, a country highly susceptible heat waves
occurrence. This work allowed creating demands and resources perceptions scales used in
subsequent studies.
In Chapter III, we report the effects that emotional prompts (i.e., thinking about extreme
hot weather events with a positive emotion prompt, negative emotion prompt, or without an
emotion prompt) had on: 1) temperature estimates and perception of pleasantness associated
with extreme hot weather events; 2) heat wave protection intentions; 3) extreme hot weather
events demands and resources appraisals; and 4) the number of verbal descriptions of demands
and resources perceptions made by the participants. This further enabled understanding if the
results obtained in studies in the United Kingdom would replicate in Portugal.
In Chapter IV, we report the identification of cognitive (e.g., heat wave risk perception),
affective (e.g., positive affect about heat), and sociodemographic predictors of demands and
resources perceptions and their combined effects on heat protection intentions during a heat
wave in Portugal. In doing so, we propose a broader theory-driven path analysis model further
illustrating the interconnections between factors.
In Chapter V, we report the identification of seasonal variations in heat wave demands
and resources perceptions, across different heat wave geographical susceptibility locations of
Portugal, as an indicator of heat wave feelings of threat and stress, as well as predictors of such
variation.
Overall, this work enabled better understanding of perceived demands and available
coping resources, as indicators of threat and stress, associated with extreme hot weather events
such as heat waves, over time and across different geographical susceptibility locations in
Portugal. Moreover, it provided a first step at creating and implementing an integrated approach
for monitoring demands and resources perceptions at the individual and social levels, and across
different contexts. This may have relevant impacts for theory and practice, so that future events
can be appraised more as a challenge

Perceptions of HIV-Related Stigma in Portugal Among MSM With HIV Infection and an Undetectable Viral Load
We explored perceptions of HIV-related stigma using a qualitative approach based on the findings of in-depth e-mail asynchronous interviews with 37 self-identified Portuguese men who have sex with men (MSM) with HIV infection and undetectable viral loads. Participants were asked to answer an online interview. Major findings concerned external perceptions of HIV-related stigma, HIV status disclosure, the impact of HIV on everyday life, the presence of double discrimination, and general perceptions of HIV-related stigma. Results revealed (a) stigmatizing and discriminatory behaviors and practices in psychosocial and inter-relational events, but not in accessing and receiving health care; (b) double exposure to stigma associated with being gay and having HIV; and (c) undetectability as an autonomous identity with important connections to social and interpersonal interactions. An important implication was related to multilevel risk perceptions and the psychosocial complexity and challenges of HIV infection. In Portugal, HIV is still a socially disabling disease.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
