    Международный культурно-академический обмен: опыт личного и научного роста

    В этой статье описывается опыт трех студентов, участвовавших в программе международной академической мобильности в рамках специальности Металлургическое машиностроение. Это отчет о пребывании студентов в России в Уральском федеральном университете, который стал возможным благодаря Федеральному университету Оуро Прето (UFOP) и Совету по международным делам (CAINT). Обмен, который проходил с начала февраля до конца июля, стал возможностью для приобретения новых научных, культурных и социальных знаний, в том числе знаний в области бизнеса, экономики и менеджмента. Надеемся на стимулирование специальности «Международная мобильность» на высшем уровне, в виду ее важности для улучшения академического образования и повышения уровня подготовки выпускников из Бразилии путем научного и культурного обмена.This article has objective describe an experience of three students to integrate a program of International Mobility Academic, during the graduate in Metallurgical Engineering. It is an account of students experience at Russia, at Ural Federal University, made possible by Federal University of Ouro Preto – (UFOP) and Coordinating international affairs – (CAINT). The exchange experience, that is preview to have started on February and end on July, had possibility the acquisition of new scientific knowledge, cultural and social, including learning Business, Economic and Management.     Investigation of the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Cymbopogon martini on S. aureus and E. coli biofilms

    Biofilms are sessile communities of microbial cells embedded in an exopolymeric secreted matrix that can adhere both to abiotic and living surfaces, serving as a permanent source of contamination. Essential oils (EOs) have different characteristics depending on the plant due to a large number of compounds (eugenol, citral, carvacrol, among others). It has been noticed that EOs have promising antibacterial activity that can be explored as an effective alternative to control biofilms. The aim of this study was to assess the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Cymbopogon martini against pre-established single biofilms developed by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Biofilms were developed in 96-well microtiter plates for 24 h at 37 ºC, in an orbital shaker at 120 rpm, being afterwards submitted to EOs aggression for 15, 30 e 60 minutes. The essential oil were dissolved in DMSO (2.0 %) and saline water (0.85 %) with tween 80 (0.5 %) in order to obtain final concentrations of 0,12, 0,48, 0,96 and 1,92 %. Biofilms were characterized, before and after EO treatment, by total biomass, through crystal violet (CV), and number of cultivable bacterial cells, expressed as Log CFU per cm2. The C. martini essential oil did not have any effective antimicrobial action against S. aureus biofilms, since there was no significant reduction of the biofilm cultivable cells and biomass. Conversely, this essential oil showed a promising antimicrobial activity against E.coli biofilms as it was observed a significant reduction of the cultivable biofilm-growing cells, in general, for all the concentrations tested and exposure time periods. Similarly to S.aureus biofilms, the C. martinii essential oil was not effective in reducing the biomass of E. coli. From the data, it can be concluded that under the conditions tested, the C. martinii essential oil was more effective in the inhibition of the bacterial cells entrapped in E. coli biofilms than in the removal of biofilm mass. This inability to remove biofilm s from surfaces can be a drawback since the viable cells remaining within the biofilms after EOs treatment are protected by the exopolysaccharides matrix, allowing its multiplication. To overcome this situation, it would be interesting to assess the anti-biofilm potential of the C. martinii essential oil, as well as its synergistic activity with an antimicrobial agent with biofilm disrupting properties

    Evolutionarily conserved mechanisms of male germline development in flowering plants and animals

    Sexual reproduction is the main reproductive strategy of the overwhelming majority of eukaryotes. This suggests that the last eukaryotic common ancestor was able to reproduce sexually. Sexual reproduction reflects the ability to perform meiosis, and ultimately generating gametes, which are cells that carry recombined half sets of the parental genome and are able to fertilize. These functions have been allocated to a highly specialized cell lineage: the germline. Given its significant evolutionary conservation, it is to be expected that the germline programme shares common molecular bases across extremely divergent eukaryotic species. In the present review, we aim to identify the unifying principles of male germline establishment and development by comparing two very disparate kingdoms: plants and animals. We argue that male meiosis defines two temporally regulated gene expression programmes: the first is required for meiotic commitment, and the second is required for the acquisition of fertilizing ability. Small RNA pathways are a further key communality, ultimately ensuring the epigenetic stability of the information conveyed by the male germline

We thank all volunteers who participate in BioDiversity4All project.Opportunistic citizen science databases are becoming an important way of gathering information on species distributions. These data are temporally and spatially dispersed and could have limitations regarding biases in the distribution of the observations in space and/or time. In this work, we test the influence of landscape variables in the distribution of citizen science observations for eight taxonomic groups. We use data collected through a Portuguese citizen science database (biodiversity4all.org). We use a zero-inflated negative binomial regression to model the distribution of observations as a function of a set of variables representing the landscape features plausibly influencing the spatial distribution of the records. Results suggest that the density of paths is the most important variable, having a statistically significant positive relationship with number of observations for seven of the eight taxa considered. Wetland coverage was also identified as having a significant, positive relationship, for birds, amphibians and reptiles, and mammals. Our results highlight that the distribution of species observations, in citizen science projects, is spatially biased. Higher frequency of observations is driven largely by accessibility and by the presence of water bodies. We conclude that efforts are required to increase the spatial evenness of sampling effort from volunteers.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Dietary calcium: strategies to optimize intake

    Calcium is an essential nutrient required for numerous biological functions. Studies have demonstrated an association between low calcium intake and chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis, colon cancer, hypertension, and obesity. However, most Brazilians do not meet the adequate intake for calcium. This review focuses on the endogenous (age, hormonal state) and exogenous (phytate, oxalate, sodium, bioactive compounds and vitamin D) factors that can influence calcium absorption. The main methods used for evaluating calcium absorption and bioavailability. The potential factors for the low calcium intake: 1) Food habits - substitution of milk for soft drinks, eating away from home and skipping meals specially breakfast; 2) High cost of dairy food. Besides, this article discuss strategies to optimize calcium intake: 1) Increase knowledge of the relationship between calcium and health and the main food sources; 2) Increase availability of calcium-fortified foods; 3) Supplement use for target groups - when and how administrate calcium salts.O cálcio é um nutriente essencial necessário em diversas funções biológicas. Estudos têm demonstrado a associação entre o baixo consumo de cálcio e doenças crônicas, entre elas osteoporose, câncer de colón, hipertensão arterial e obesidade. Entretanto, grande parte da população brasileira apresenta consumo de cálcio abaixo do recomendado. Este artigo objetiva revisar os fatores endógenos (idade e estado hormonal) e exógenos (fitatos, oxalatos, sódio, compostos bioativos e vitamina D) que influenciam a absorção do cálcio, bem como as principais metodologias utilizadas para avaliar a absorção e biodisponibilidade desse nutriente. Discorre-se sobre os possíveis fatores para o baixo consumo de cálcio: 1) Hábito alimentar - substituição de leite por bebidas com baixo teor de cálcio como o refrigerante, refeições realizadas fora de casa e a não realização de refeições como o café da manhã; 2) Alto custo dos alimentos fontes de cálcio.     Draft Genome Sequence of the First NDM-1-ProducingProvidencia stuartiiStrain Isolated in Portugal

    We report here the draft genome sequence of the first NDM-1-producing Providencia stuartii strain isolated in Portugal. Sequence analyses revealed the presence of an incompatibility group A/C2 (IncA/C2) plasmid and of diverse acquired genes conferring resistance to β-lactams, aminoglycosides, tetracycline, macrolides, chloramphenicol, and sulfonamides. This sequence contributes to the evaluation of the spread of NDM-1 producers.V.     Effect of essential oils on the planktonic of S. aureus and E. coli cells

    The essential oils of aromatic plants and their components have a wide range of applications in ethno-medicine, preservation, food flavoring and fragrances and in the perfume industries. Some essential oils derived from plants have revealed promising antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria, including antibiotic resistant species. The aim of this study was to examine the antimicrobial effect of essential oils of Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Cymbopogon martini against planktonic Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli growth. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oils was checked by bacterial growth, at 37 ºC and 120 rpm, in the presence of increasing concentrations of each essential oil for 24 h. Essential oils were dissolved in DMSO (2.0 %) and saline water (0.85 %) with tween 80 (0.5 %) in order to obtain final concentrations of 0.06 %, 0.09 % and 0.12%, for E. coli, and 0.09 %, 0, 12 %, 0.36 % and 0.48 %, for S. aureus. Bacterial planktonic growth over time was followed by the quantification of the number of viable through cultivation of aliquots in TSA. Data showed that E. coli was more sensitive to the action of both essential oils, since complete planktonic growth inhibition was attained with a concentration of 0.09 % of the essential oil of C. zeylanicum oil and 0.06 % of the essential oil of C. Martini. Conversely, S. aureus was less sensitive to the antimicrobial action of the essential oils. C. zeylanicum essential oil inhibited S. aureus growth only at concentrations of 0.36 % and 0.48 %, after 4 and 2 hours of growth. However, unexpectedly after 24 hours those S. aureus cells recovered gradually their planktonic growth. The data pointed out that it is crucial to check the bacterial behavior in the presence of antimicrobial products in different concentrations and over time due to the possible development of bacterial tolerance towards the mechanisms of action of those products. In fact, antimicrobials may have a positive effect in the early hours of application, as demonstrated by some results of this experiment. However, for longer times, the inhibitory effect of antimicrobials can be reverted by bacteria making ineffective their use as disinfectants in food industries. Addiotionally, the continuous exposure of bacteria to antimicrobials can influence the process of microbial resistance de development and increase. These preliminary results demonstrated the possibility of using essential oils of C. zeylanicum and C. martini against two bacteria that are responsible for foodborne illnesses at low concentrations but only for slightly prolonged periods of exposure

    Escala de Competências de Estudo: resultados de um estudo de validação no Instituto Politécnico de Leiria

    Descreve-se um estudo exploratório de construção e validação de uma escala voltada para a avaliação das competências de estudo e abordagens à aprendizagem por parte de alunos do Ensino Superior Politécnico. Uma amostra de 264 alunos foi considerada neste estudo, tendo-se recorrido à Escala de Competências de Estudo (ECE – Almeida & Joly, em preparação). Os resultados, longe de confirmarem as dimensões iniciais propostas pelos autores, parecem identificar duas formas de auto-regulação nos alunos: uma mais centrada nos comportamentos e condutas quotidianas (organização do estudo) e outra mais dirigida por aspectos motivacionais e cognitivos. São apresentados os resultados centrados na delimitação das duas dimensões, assim como a sua associação a níveis de rendimento escolar (disciplinas em atraso e médias obtidas) e diferenciação segundo o género, idade e tipo de curso frequentado pelos alunos. As correlações com o rendimento são mais elevadas tomando a dimensão mais comportamental da autoregulação, sendo que as alunas apresentam médias mais elevadas nas duas dimensões e os alunos mais velhos apresentam níveis mais elevados de auto-regulação em termos motivacionais e cognitivos
