Evaluation Of Three Radiographic Methods For Detecting Occlusal Caries Lesions

    Get PDF
Aim: To compare, in vitro, the performance of three radiographic methods for the detection of occlusal caries in permanent teeth. Methods: A total of 96 extracted molars with no apparent occlusal cavitation were selected, they were photographed and radiographed under standardized conditions using conventional E-plus films and two digital systems, CDR and Sidexis. Two examiners analyzed all films and images, recording the presence and lesion depth. One quarter of the teeth were re-examined for intra- and interexaminer agreements. The teeth were subsequently bisected and examined under a stereomicroscope. The intra and interexaminer agreements and the diagnostic performance (sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and the area under receiver operating characteristic, ROC curve) of each method were evaluated. Results: Out of 96 occlusal surfaces, 41 were sound, 31 had lesions in enamel, and 24 had dentin lesions. Weighted Kappa values for intraexaminer agreement varied widely, depending on both the observer and method. The interexaminer agreement was higher for the digital images than for the conventional films. The area under the ROC curve for enamel and dentin caries (at D1 diagnostic threshold) was 0.55 for films, 0.60 for Schick and 0.54 for Sirona, which were not significantly different from each other. Conclusions: Digital images presented better results of interexaminer agreement; however, no additional effect in the diagnostic performance could be observed in comparison to conventional films.8267-7

Exponential trichotomies and continuity of invariant manifolds

In this work, we consider the invariant manifolds for the family of equationsx  = Ax + f(", x), where A the is generator of a strongly continuous semigroup of linear operators in a Banach space X and f(", ·) : X ! X is continuous. The existence of stable (unstable) and center-stable (center-unstable) manifolds for a large class of these equations has been proved in [2]. We prove here that, if A admits a exponential trichotomy and f satisfies some suitable regularity hypotheses, then those manifolds are continuous with respect to the parameter".

The objective in the present work is to discuss the universalist ethics of Immanuel Kant, that proposes a universal moral law, valid for all rational beings, including the man. Three questions guide our research, namely: 1) How is the categorical imperative, the expression of the moral law, possible for man?; 2) How can the moral law determine man's will?; and, 3) What happens in the subjectivity of man? To answer these questions, we analysed the Third Section of the Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, the First Chapter and the Third Chapter of the Analytic of Critique of Practical Reason. In these texts, we verify three aspects of the conscience of the moral law, namely: the reflexive; the determinant; and, the subjective

The study addresses the investigation of welding using the pulsed GMAW process as a viable option for joining thinner sheets, particularly in contexts like pressure vessel manufacturing, the automotive industry, and cladding welding. This process offers the advantage of higher welding speed while requiring reduced welding energy. In the experimental phase of the study, variations were made in peak current, base time, and welding speed parameters. The main objective was to evaluate the effect of these parameters on dilution; weld beads were performed on the free surface (bead-on-plate) of the plate and in the 1G position. The Box-Behnken experimental design was applied to execute the weld beads and optimize dilution. Through statistical analysis of the evaluated variables, it was possible to determine the degree of importance of each. The conclusions highlighted that, in order to decrease dilution, it is necessary to increase the Base Time and decrease the Welding Speed. In summary, this study demonstrates that the pulsed GMAW welding process is effective when seeking lower dilution (thermal input), especially in scenarios involving cladding welding

A Decomposition Heuristic for the Maximal Covering Location Problem

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a cluster partitioning technique to calculate improved upper bounds to the optimal solution of maximal covering location problems. Given a covering distance, a graph is built considering as vertices the potential facility locations, and with an edge connecting each pair of facilities that attend a same client. Coupling constraints, corresponding to some edges of this graph, are identified and relaxed in the Lagrangean way, resulting in disconnected subgraphs representing smaller subproblems that are computationally easier to solve by exact methods. The proposed technique is compared to the classical approach, using real data and instances from the available literature

Hand Posture Effects on Handedness Recognition as Revealed by the Simon Effect

    Get PDF
We investigated the influence of hand posture in handedness recognition, while varying the spatial correspondence between stimulus and response in a modified Simon task. Drawings of the left and right hands were displayed either in a back or palm view while participants discriminated stimulus handedness by pressing either a left or right key with their hands resting either in a prone or supine posture. As a control, subjects performed a regular Simon task using simple geometric shapes as stimuli. Results showed that when hands were in a prone posture, the spatially corresponding trials (i.e., stimulus and response located on the same side) were faster than the non-corresponding trials (i.e., stimulus and response on opposite sides). In contrast, for the supine posture, there was no difference between corresponding and non-corresponding trials. Control experiments with the regular Simon task showed that the posture of the responding hand had no influence on performance. When the stimulus is the drawing of a hand, however, the posture of the responding hand affects the spatial correspondence effect because response location is coded based on multiple reference points, including the body of the hand
