The antioxidant activity of a prenyl flavonoid alters its antifungal toxicity on Candida albicans biofilms
The antioxidant effect of 8PP, a prenylflavonoid from Dalea elegans on Candida albicans biofilms, was investigated. We previously reported that sensitive (SCa) and resistant C. albicans (RCa) biofilms were strongly inhibited by this compound, in a dose-depending manner (50 μM-100 μM), with a prooxidant effect leading to accumulation of endogenous oxidative metabolites and increased antioxidant defenses. In this work, the antifungal activity of high concentrations of 8PP (200–1000 μM), the cellular stress imbalance and the architecture of biofilms were evaluated. Biofilms were studied by crystal violet and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) with COMSTAT analysis. Superoxide anion radical, the activity of the superoxide dismutase and the total antioxidant capacity were measured. Intracellular ROS were detected by a DCFH-DA and visualized by CSLM; reactive nitrogen intermediates by Griess. An antioxidant effect was detected at 1000 μM and levels of oxidant metabolites remained low, with major changes in the SCa. COMSTAT analysis showed that biofilms treated with higher concentrations exhibited different diffusion distances with altered topographic surface architectures, voids, channels and pores that could change the flow inside the matrix of biofilms. We demonstrate for first time, a concentration-dependent antioxidant action of 8PP, which can alter its antifungal activity on biofilms.Fil: Peralta, Mariana Andrea. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Melanogenic inhibitory effects of Triangularin in B16F0 melanoma cells, in vitro and molecular docking studies
The lack of secure therapies for hyperpigmentation disorders, without serious adverse effects, and the latest reports relating melanogenic disorders with development of neurodegenerative diseases, encourage the continuing search for new drugs for the treatment of such disorders. In this sense, the plant kingdom is an important source of bioactive natural products with great potential for the research and development of new therapeutics. The present study evaluated the anti-melanogenic activity of the natural methoxylated chalcone, 2′,6′-dihydroxy-4′-methoxy-3′-methylchalcone (Triangularin, T), on diphenolase activity from mushroom tyrosinase and on murine B16F0 melanoma cell model. In addition, molecular modelling studies were carried out in order to understand the inhibitory activity observed. T showed a potent anti-melanogenic activity being more active than kojic acid (KA) on tyrosinase isolated of both sources and on intracellular tyrosinase. Molecular docking studies displayed important interactions between T and the active site of tyrosinase. Our results suggest that T may be useful for the treatment of hyperpigmentary disorders.Fil: Santi, María Daniela. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Personality disorders and emotional variables in patients with lupus
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a prototype of the autoimmune
diseases, is a multi-systemic disease characterized by an alteration
in the immunological response, where the production of
antibodies is directed against nuclear antigens, thus affecting many
organs and systems. The course of this disease includes a wide
range of clinical manifestations, different anatomo-pathological
findings, and a series of immunological abnormalities. It is characterized
by outbreaks and remissions. SLE can be manifested by
general malaise, fever, fatigue, weight loss, skin rashes or joint
inflammation, anemia, inflammation of the lymphatic glands, lowering
of the defenses against infection, and cardiac, kidney, pulmonary
and neurological alterations. In chronic dermatological
lupus, only the skin is affected; this condition can present rash
erythemas, etc. The recent introduction of new immunological
diagnostic methods (antinuclear antibodies, anti-DNA antibodies,
complementary fraction, etc.) has made it possible to recognize
less severe forms of the disease, as well as its outbreaks and
therapeutic guidelines.
Different psychological variables have been associated with the
exacerbation of the disease; one of the most notable is stress, and
many patients with lupus also suffer diverse psychiatric and personality
disorders associated with the disease, with a prevalence
oscillating between 20% and 60%. Furthermore, these alterations
have been associated with a lower quality of life, poorer evolution
and psychiatric antecedents. In the specific case of personality
alterations, previous research has found the existence of a “triad
of personality” characteristics in patients with lupus. Depression,
hysteria and hypochondria are the factors making up this triad.
However, it has not been shown whether these personality disorders
are just another symptom of the disease or a consequence of
the emotional disorders produced by it.
The purpose of this study was to test the possible existence of
personality disorders and their relationship with other affective
disorders in SLE
Evaluating the Performance of High Spatial Resolution UAV-Photogrammetry and UAV-LiDAR for Salt Marshes: The Cadiz Bay Study Case
Salt marshes are very valuable and threatened ecosystems, and are challenging to study
due to their difficulty of access and the alterable nature of their soft soil. Remote sensing methods
in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer a great opportunity to improve our knowledge in this
type of complex habitat. However, further analysis of UAV technology performance is still required
to standardize the application of these methods in salt marshes. This work evaluates and tunes
UAV-photogrammetry and UAV-LiDAR techniques for high-resolution applications in salt marsh
habitats, and also analyzes the best sensor configuration to collect reliable data and generate the
best results. The performance is evaluated through the accuracy assessment of the corresponding
generated products. UAV-photogrammetry yields the highest spatial resolution (1.25 cm/pixel)
orthomosaics and digital models, but at the cost of large files that require long processing times,
making it applicable only for small areas. On the other hand, UAV-LiDAR has proven to be a
promising tool for coastal research, providing high-resolution orthomosaics (2.7 cm/pixel) and
high-accuracy digital elevation models from lighter datasets, with less time required to process
them. One issue with UAV-LiDAR application in salt marshes is the limited effectiveness of the
autoclassification of bare ground and vegetated surfaces, since the scattering of the LiDAR point
clouds for both salt marsh surfaces is similar. Fortunately, when LiDAR and multispectral data
are combined, the efficiency of this step improves significantly. The correlation between LiDAR
measurements and field values improves from R2 values of 0.79 to 0.94 when stable reference points
(i.e., a few additional GCPs in rigid infrastructures) are also included as control points. According
to our results, the most reliable LiDAR sensor configuration for salt marsh applications is the nadir
non-repetitive combination. This configuration has the best balance between dataset size, spatial
resolution, and processing time. Nevertheless, further research is still needed to develop accurate
canopy height models. The present work demonstrates that UAV-LiDAR technology offers a suitable
solution for coastal research applications where high spatial and temporal resolutions are required

Fil: Acevedo, Mariana Patricia. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. X-ray emission from a liquid curtain jet when irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses
Laser-based sources of ionizing radiation have attracted considerable attention in the last years for their broad potential applications. However, the stability and robustness of such sources are still issues that need to be addressed. Aiming to solve such problems, we propose a source that uses a liquid jet—rather than a solid—as a target for the production of X-rays. Liquid jets offer always a clean surface for every laser shot which represent a clear advantage over solids. In this work, we present an experimental characterization of the X-ray emission of such targets, and study the efficiency of the process when two temporally delayed pulses are used. According to the obtained results, the X-ray yield is comparable with commonly used targets.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad FIS2016- 81056-

A new species of Torrestrongylus (Trichostrongylidae, Anoplostrongylinae) from Macrotus waterhousii (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) in Central Mexico
A new species of nematode, Torrestrongylus tetradorsalis n. sp., is described herein, based on specimens recovered from the small intestine of the leaf-nosed bat, Macrotus waterhousii, from the Biosphere Reserve “Sierra de Huautla” in the state of Morelos, Mexico. The new species is included in Torrestrongylus because it features a bursa of the type 3 – 2, a divided cephalic vesicle with an anterior half in the shape of an umbrella, and a posterior widened half. The new species can be distinguished from the only other congener T. torrei Pérez-Vigueras, 1935 by four key features: first, by the absence of cervical alae in both males and females; second, by the relatively longer second half of the cephalic cap; third, by the configuration of the dorsal ray, that does not have a medial terminal ray, and finally, by the structure of the spicules. This is the second species in the genus, previously known from bats of the families Phyllostomidae and Molossidae in Cuba, and now in Mexico
