Bright single-photon sources in bottom-up tailored nanowires
The ability to achieve near-unity light extraction efficiency is necessary
for a truly deterministic single photon source. The most promising method to
reach such high efficiencies is based on embedding single photon emitters in
tapered photonic waveguides defined by top-down etching techniques. However,
light extraction efficiencies in current top-down approaches are limited by
fabrication imperfections and etching induced defects. The efficiency is
further tempered by randomly positioned off-axis quantum emitters. Here, we
present perfectly positioned single quantum dots on the axis of a tailored
nanowire waveguide using bottom-up growth. In comparison to quantum dots in
nanowires without waveguide, we demonstrate a 24-fold enhancement in the single
photon flux, corresponding to a light extraction efficiency of 42 %. Such high
efficiencies in one-dimensional nanowires are promising to transfer quantum
information over large distances between remote stationary qubits using flying
qubits within the same nanowire p-n junction.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

Evidence that pneumococcal serotype replacement in Massachusetts following conjugate vaccination is now complete
Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) has been reduced in the US following conjugate vaccination (PCV7) targeting seven pneumococcal serotypes in 2000. However, increases in IPD due to other serotypes have been observed, in particular 19A. How much this serotype replacement will erode the benefits of vaccination and over what timescale is unknown. We used a population genetic approach to test first whether the selective impact of vaccination could be detected in a longitudinal carriage sample, and secondly how long it persisted for following introduction of vaccine in 2000. To detect the selective impact of the vaccine we compared the serotype diversity of samples from pneumococcal carriage in Massachusetts children collected in 2001, 2004 and 2007 with others collected in the pre-vaccine era in Massachusetts, the UK and Finland. The 2004 sample was significantly (p \u3e0.0001) more diverse than pre-vaccine samples, indicating the selective pressure of vaccination. The 2007 sample showed no significant difference in diversity from the pre-vaccine period, and exhibited similar population structure, but with different serotypes. In 2007 the carriage frequency of 19A was similar to that of the most common serotype in pre-vaccine samples. We suggest that serotype replacement involving 19A may be complete in Massachusetts due to similarities in population structure to pre-vaccine samples. These results suggest that the replacement phenomenon occurs rapidly with high vaccine coverage, and may allay concerns about future increases in disease due to 19A. For other serotypes, the future course of replacement disease remains to be determined
Ranking ligand affinity for the DNA minor groove by experiment and simulation
The structural and thermodynamic basis for the strength and selectivity of the interactions of minor-groove binders (MGBs) with DNA is not fully understood. In 2003 we reported the first example of a thiazole containing MGB that bound in a phase shifted pattern that spanned 6 base-pairs rather than the usual 4 (for tricyclic distamycin-like compounds). Since then, using DNA footprinting, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry and molecular dynamics, we have established that the flanking bases around the central 4 being read by the ligand have subtle effects on recognition. We have investigated the effect of these flanking sequences on binding and the reasons for the differences and established a computational method to rank ligand affinity against varying DNA sequences
Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers and quantum dot lasers
The use of cavity to manipulate photon emission of quantum dots (QDs) has
been opening unprecedented opportunities for realizing quantum functional
nanophotonic devices and also quantum information devices. In particular, in
the field of semiconductor lasers, QDs were introduced as a superior
alternative to quantum wells to suppress the temperature dependence of the
threshold current in vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers
(VECSELs). In this work, a review of properties and development of
semiconductor VECSEL devices and QD laser devices is given. Based on the
features of VECSEL devices, the main emphasis is put on the recent development
of technological approach on semiconductor QD VECSELs. Then, from the viewpoint
of both single QD nanolaser and cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), a
single-QD-cavity system resulting from the strong coupling of QD cavity is
presented. A difference of this review from the other existing works on
semiconductor VECSEL devices is that we will cover both the fundamental aspects
and technological approaches of QD VECSEL devices. And lastly, the presented
review here has provided a deep insight into useful guideline for the
development of QD VECSEL technology and future quantum functional nanophotonic
devices and monolithic photonic integrated circuits (MPhICs).Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with

Generating Single Microwave Photons in a Circuit
Electromagnetic signals in circuits consist of discrete photons, though
conventional voltage sources can only generate classical fields with a coherent
superposition of many different photon numbers. While these classical signals
can control and measure bits in a quantum computer (qubits), single photons can
carry quantum information, enabling non-local quantum interactions, an
important resource for scalable quantum computing. Here, we demonstrate an
on-chip single photon source in a circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED)
architecture, with a microwave transmission line cavity that collects the
spontaneous emission of a single superconducting qubit with high efficiency.
The photon source is triggered by a qubit rotation, as a photon is generated
only when the qubit is excited. Tomography of both qubit and fluorescence
photon shows that arbitrary qubit states can be mapped onto the photon state,
demonstrating an ability to convert a stationary qubit into a flying qubit.
Both the average power and voltage of the photon source are characterized to
verify performance of the system. This single photon source is an important
addition to a rapidly growing toolbox for quantum optics on a chip.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, hires version at

Quantum Transduction of Telecommunications-band Single Photons from a Quantum Dot by Frequency Upconversion
The ability to transduce non-classical states of light from one wavelength to
another is a requirement for integrating disparate quantum systems that take
advantage of telecommunications-band photons for optical fiber transmission of
quantum information and near-visible, stationary systems for manipulation and
storage. In addition, transducing a single-photon source at 1.3 {\mu}m to
visible wavelengths for detection would be integral to linear optical quantum
computation due to the challenges of detection in the near-infrared. Recently,
transduction at single-photon power levels has been accomplished through
frequency upconversion, but it has yet to be demonstrated for a true
single-photon source. Here, we transduce the triggered single-photon emission
of a semiconductor quantum dot at 1.3 {\mu}m to 710 nm with a total detection
(internal conversion) efficiency of 21% (75%). We demonstrate that the 710 nm
signal maintains the quantum character of the 1.3 {\mu}m signal, yielding a
photon anti-bunched second-order intensity correlation, g^(2)(t), that shows
the optical field is composed of single photons with g^(2)(0) = 0.165 < 0.5.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Smart mobility: a mobile approach
The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the key ingredients for the realization of Smart Cities. IoT devices are essential components of the Smart Cities infrastructure, as they can provide information collected from the environment through sensors or allow other systems to reach out and act on the world through actuators. IoT data collection, however, is not limited to sensors and machines, but to data from social networks, and the web. Social networks have a huge impact on the amount of data being produced daily, becoming an increasingly central and important data source. The exploitation of these data sources, combined with the growing popularity of mobile devices, can lead to the development of better solutions to improve people’s quality of life. This paper discusses how to take advantage of the benefits of mobile devices and the vast range of information sources and services, such as traffic conditions, and narrow, closed or conditioned roads data. The proposed system uses a real-time collection, organization, and transmission of traffic and road conditions data to provide efficient and accurate information to drivers. With the purpose of supporting and improving traffic data collection and distribution, an Android application was developed to collect information about extraordinary events that take place in a city, providing warnings and alternative routes to drivers and helping them to improve their time management. The developed solution also exploits the existing gaps in other applications, implementing a more specific solution for the Madeira Island traffic condition problems.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Wearable Haptic Devices for Gait Re-education by Rhythmic Haptic Cueing
This research explores the development and evaluation of wearable haptic devices for gait sensing and rhythmic haptic cueing in the context of gait re-education for people with neurological and neurodegenerative conditions. Many people with long-term neurological and neurodegenerative conditions such as Stroke, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease suffer from impaired walking gait pattern. Gait improvement can lead to better fluidity in walking, improved health outcomes, greater independence, and enhanced quality of life. Existing lab-based studies with wearable devices have shown that rhythmic haptic cueing can cause immediate improvements to gait features such as temporal symmetry, stride length, and walking speed. However, current wearable systems are unsuitable for self-managed use for in-the-wild applications with people having such conditions. This work aims to investigate the research question of how wearable haptic devices can help in long-term gait re-education using rhythmic haptic cueing. A longitudinal pilot study has been conducted with a brain trauma survivor, providing rhythmic haptic cueing using a wearable haptic device as a therapeutic intervention for a two-week period. Preliminary results comparing pre and post-intervention gait measurements have shown improvements in walking speed, temporal asymmetry, and stride length. The pilot study has raised an array of issues that require further study. This work aims to develop and evaluate prototype systems through an iterative design process to make possible the self-managed use of such devices in-the-wild. These systems will directly provide therapeutic intervention for gait re-education, offer enhanced information for therapists, remotely monitor dosage adherence and inform treatment and prognoses over the long-term. This research will evaluate the use of technology from the perspective of multiple stakeholders, including clinicians, carers and patients. This work has the potential to impact clinical practice nationwide and worldwide in neuro-physiotherapy
