On the separable quotient problem for Banach spaces

While the classic separable quotient problem remains open, we survey general results related to this problem and examine the existence of a particular infinitedimensional separable quotient in some Banach spaces of vector-valued functions, linear operators and vector measures. Most of the results presented are consequence of known facts, some of them relative to the presence of complemented copies of the classic sequence spaces c_0 and l_p, for 1 <= p <= \infty. Also recent results of Argyros - Dodos - Kanellopoulos, and Sliwa are provided. This makes our presentation supplementary to a previous survey (1997) due to Mujica

Exploring the Attitudes and Perceptions of Hispanics as Caregivers for Children in Foster Care: A Phenomenological Study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the attitudes and perceptions of Hispanics living in Tampa Bay, Florida regarding foster parent roles. The theory guiding this study is the researcher’s axiological philosophical assumption. The philosophical assumption is applied within the social constructivist interpretive framework. The researcher seeks to understand the study participants\u27 world and develop meaning to their lived experiences, as discussed during the interviews. The participants’ views are the primary source of reliance for the research (Creswell & Poth, 2018). The researcher’s position in this study is relative to their social position, personal, political, and professional beliefs when utilizing the axiological philosophical assumption (Creswell & Poth, 2018). This study explored why Hispanics may or may not choose to become foster parents or caregivers to children in foster care. Data were collected through guided interviews and field notes including notes regarding observable body language or facial expression. The researcher conducted data analysis utilizing the Interpretative Phenomenological Approach to interpret the data drawn from participant interviews. Study results sought to understand the lived experiences of Hispanics in the United States that contribute to their perceptions about foster parent and caregiver roles for foster children

A PDE approach of inflammatory phase dynamics in diabetic wounds

    Get PDF
The objective of the present paper is the modeling and analysis of the dynamics of macrophages and certain growth factors in the inflammatory phase, the first one of the wound healing process. It is the phase where there exists a major difference between diabetic and non-diabetic wound healing, an effect that we will consider in this paper

Electrical resistivity and Ground Penetrating Radar for the characterisation of the internal architecture of Quaternary sediments in the Midlands of Ireland

Geophysical techniques Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) supported by traditional field methods are used for the geological mapping, description and interpretation of Quaternary unconsolidated sediments in a site located in theMidlands of Ireland. The site comprises a broad range of glacial and postglacial sediments (diamicton, esker sand and gravel, glaciolacustrine sand, glaciolacustrine silt/clay and peat). Preliminary fieldwork comprising, geomorphological mapping, lithostratigraphic analysis of exposures and borehole drilling and laboratory testing encompassing particle size distribution analysis were carried out to broadly characterise the geology of the study area. These data aided locating the geophysical profiles and supported the geophysical data interpretation. FiveGPR radargrams were collected and permitted depicting the subsurface internal architecture within low conductivity unconsolidated sediments and aided to the classification and characterisation of sedimentological and deformational structures. Four ERT profiles allowed the depth to bedrock to be determined and lithological classification of the sediments. The use of these geophysical techniques in combination with geotechnical and geological data allowed (i) the determination of the lithological composition and detailed internal architecture of the subsurface, (ii) the characterisation and description of the geology of the site and (iii) understanding the depositional processes acting in the area during ice withdrawal. Diamicton and esker gravelswere deposited subglacially by an ice sheetwithdrawingwestwards; glaciolacustrine sediments located along the southmargin of the esker ridgewere laid down in an ice marginal environment as a subaqueous fan composed of silt, sand and gravel, and as distal deposits composed of silt and clay in the lower ground area between the fan and the esker ridge. Peat developed during postglacial times andwas partially cut away by anthropogenic action at a later stage

Controlling reproduction in organic sheep breeding: the influence of breeding factors on the effectiveness of the ram effect

    Get PDF
The ram effect, which is a natural method for the control of reproduction in sheep, is an alternative to hormone treatments that are banned on organic farms. The ram effect induces a combination of ovulation and oestrus in ewes that is acyclic and conducive to artificial insemination. The proportion of acyclic females with induced ovulation and their subsequent fertility at the first oestrus is variable. The control of some breeding factors that have been studied here may help to reduce this variability. The proportion of ewes induced to ovulate by rams increased as the season advanced (54% in April vs. 84% at the end of May, p<0.05) and with a longer time period between drying-off and mating: from 29% to 84% (p<0.001) for 22 and 86 days elapsed, respectively. The fertility of these ewes at the first oestrus was also higher at the end of May than in April (86% vs. 39%, p<0.01) and increased with the amount of time elapsed since drying-off (55% and 81% for 22 and 86 days, respectively; p=0.09). The time that the first oestrus occurs is later for lean ewes because they have a higher proportion of short cycles (67%) than fat ewes (41%, p<0.05)
