F-threshold functions: syzygy gap fractals and the two-variable homogeneous case

In this article we study F-pure thresholds (and, more generally, F-thresholds) of homogeneous polynomials in two variables over a field of characteristic p>0. Passing to a field extension, we factor such a polynomial into a product of powers of pairwise prime linear forms, and to this collection of linear forms we associate a special type of function called a syzygy gap fractal. We use this syzygy gap fractal to study, at once, the collection of all F-pure thresholds of all polynomials constructed with the same fixed linear forms. This allows us to describe the structure of the denominator of such an F-pure threshold, showing in particular that whenever the F-pure threshold differs from its expected value its denominator is a multiple of p. This answers a question of Schwede in the two-variable homogeneous case. In addition, our methods give an algorithm to compute F-pure thresholds of homogenous polynomials in two variables.Comment: 42 pages; 6 figures. How wide is the gap? An investigation of gender wage differences using quantile regression

In this paper we examine the determinants of wages and decompose the observed differences across genders into the "explained by different characteristics" and "explained by different returns components" using a sample of Spanish workers. Apart from the conditional expectation of wages, we estimate the conditional quantile functions for men and women and find that both the absolute wage gap and the part attributed to different returns at each of the quantiles, far from being well represented by their counterparts at the mean, are greater as we move up in the wage range.Gender wage gap, quantile regression, education

Is there a producer quality wage premium similar to the exporter wage premium?

    Get PDF
Exporter wage premium has been widely studied in the literature on international trade. The aim of this paper is analyze whether there is also a producer quality wage premium at firm level, and if so, analyze whether its origin is similar to the exporter wage premium. In other words, I test whether firms that increase their product quality become more productive and pay higher wages (as with the learning by exporting hypothesis, we can speak of learning by producing quality), or, in contrast, more-productive firms with higher wages opt to increase product quality because their higher productivity means these kinds of decisions and investments can be taken with more guarantees (self-selection hypothesis). Moreover, I find on the one hand, that firms which start to increase their product quality have a higher probability of exporting than firms that never increase their product quality, and on the other, that firms which start to export increase their product quality more than firms that never export. However, in no cases do I find evidence in favour of learning by exporting or by producing quality hypotheses

Residual Forage and Animal Performance from a Kikuyo Pasture under Mixed Grazing and Supplementation

Five grazing strategies were compared: grazing by ewes only and mixed grazing (ewes + heifers), in mixed grazing heifers received no supplement or one of three supplements. Ruminal undegradable protein (RUP) varied among supplement: 4.25, 9.11 and 9.13%, the supplement with the highest RUP included protected methionine. All supplements were 21% crude protein and 3.0 Mcal/kg of metabolizable energy. Grazing was on kikuyu, ratio was 30 kg of ewe per 100 kg of heifer in the mixed grazing treatments. Experimental grazing lasted 84 days. Variables measured were residual forage, proline content in residual forage and liveweight gains per animal and per hectare. Experimental design was a completely random with two replicates. Residual forage was the highest (P\u3c 0.05) in mixed grazing and RUP in supplement was above 4.25%. The highest (P\u3c 0.05) proline content was found in grazing by ewes only, 52% above the proline content found in mixed grazing without supplement, when heifers received supplement proline content decreased (P\u3c 0.05) further. Grazing by ewes only and mixed grazing with heifersreceiving the highest RUP in supplement showed the highest (P\u3c 0.05) daily liveweight gain per ewe of 134 g. Mixed grazing in which heifers received no supplement gave a 100% increase (P\u3c 0.05) in liveweight gain per hectare compared to grazing by ewes only. In mixed grazing offering a supplement with 9.13% RUP and protected methionine gave both the highest liveweight gains per animal and per hectare. It was concluded that mixed grazing allowed a lower stress level on kikuyu due to defoliation and a higher liveweight gain per hectare than grazing by ewes only
