Phase 0 study for a geothermal superheated water proof of concept facility
A Phase 0 study for the selection of a representative liquid-dominated geothermal resource of moderate salinity and temperature is discussed. Selection and conceptual design of a nominal 10-MWe energy conversion system, and implementation planning for Phase 1: subsystem (component, experiments) and Phase 2: final design, construction, and operation of experimental research facilities are reported. The objective of the overall program is to demonstrate the technical and economic viability of utilizing moderate temperature and salinity liquid-dominated resources with acceptable environmental impact, and thus encourage commercial scale development of geothermal electrical power generation
Characteristics of the Langley 8-foot Transonic Tunnel with Slotted Test Section
A large wind tunnel, approximately 8 feet in diameter, has been converted to transonic operation by means of slots in the boundary extending in the direction of flow. The usefulness of such a slotted wind tunnel, already known with respect to the reduction of the subsonic blockage interference and the production of continuously variable supersonic flows, has been augmented by devising a slot shape with which a supersonic test region with excellent flow quality could be produced. Experimental locations of detached shock waves ahead of axially symmetric bodies at low supersonic speeds in the slotted test section agreed satisfactorily with predictions obtained by use of existing approximate methods

On the statistical evaluation of dose-response functions
The linear-quadratic dependence of effect on the dose of ionizing radiation and its biophysical implications are considered. The estimation of the parameters of the response function and the derivation of the joint confidence region of the estimates are described. The method is applied to the induction of pink mutations inTradescantia which follows the linear-quadratic model. The statistical procedure is also suitable for other response functions
Shell Model Study of the Neutron-Rich Nuclei around N=28
We describe the properties of the neutron rich nuclei around N=28 in the
shell mode framework. The valence space comprises the shell for protons an
the shell for neutrons without any restriction. Good agreement is found
with the available experimental data. The N=28 shell closure, even if eroded
due to the large neutron excess, persists. The calculations predict that
S and S are deformed with and
respectively.Comment: 17 pages and 19 figures, LateX, RevTe
Beta-delayed deuteron emission from 11Li: decay of the halo
The deuteron-emission channel in the beta-decay of the halo-nucleus 11Li was
measured at the ISAC facility at TRIUMF by implanting post-accelerated 11Li
ions into a segmented silicon detector. The events of interest were identified
by correlating the decays of 11Li with those of the daughter nuclei. This
method allowed the energy spectrum of the emitted deuterons to be extracted,
free from contributions from other channels, and a precise value for the
branching ratio B_d = 1.30(13) x 10-4 to be deduced for E(c.m.) > 200 keV. The
results provide the first unambiguous experimental evidence that the decay
takes place essentially in the halo of 11Li, and that it proceeds mainly to the
9Li + d continuum, opening up a new means to study of the halo wave function of
11Li.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Electronic structure and the glass transition in pnictide and chalcogenide semiconductor alloys. Part I: The formation of the -network
Semiconductor glasses exhibit many unique optical and electronic anomalies.
We have put forth a semi-phenomenological scenario (J. Chem. Phys. 132, 044508
(2010)) in which several of these anomalies arise from deep midgap electronic
states residing on high-strain regions intrinsic to the activated transport
above the glass transition. Here we demonstrate at the molecular level how this
scenario is realized in an important class of semiconductor glasses, namely
chalcogen and pnictogen containing alloys. Both the glass itself and the
intrinsic electronic midgap states emerge as a result of the formation of a
network composed of -bonded atomic -orbitals that are only weakly
hybridized. Despite a large number of weak bonds, these -networks are
stable with respect to competing types of bonding, while exhibiting a high
degree of structural degeneracy. The stability is rationalized with the help of
a hereby proposed structural model, by which -networks are
symmetry-broken and distorted versions of a high symmetry structure. The latter
structure exhibits exact octahedral coordination and is fully
covalently-bonded. The present approach provides a microscopic route to a fully
consistent description of the electronic and structural excitations in vitreous
semiconductors.Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, revised version, final version to appear in J.
