    Antebellum American nativism was a choice. This article demonstrates that the sectarian violence and disorder of the 1840s and 1850s was not simply a vague, latent, inevitable anti-Catholic bigotry that sprung forth in reaction to the rising wave of Irish Catholic immigration. Instead, it was one option, dependent upon cultural, social, and moral changes occurring on both sides of the Atlantic. There is a good bit of historical irony in this conclusion because Whigs and Catholics shared many concerns about human nature and public order. However, the poverty and intemperance of many Irish immigrants, as well as their attachment to devout Roman Catholicism, and the bourgeois pretensions of American Whigs, drove many to view the Irish as socially and culturally unacceptable.

    An Empirically Based Calculation of the Extragalactic Infrared Background

    Using the excellent observed correlations among various infrared wavebands with 12 and 60 micron luminosities, we calculate the 2-300 micron spectra of galaxies as a function of luminosity. We then use 12 micron and 60 micron galaxy luminosity functions derived from IRAS data, together with recent data on the redshift evolution of galaxy emissivity, to derive a new, empirically based IR background spectrum from stellar and dust emission in galaxies. Our best estimate for the IR background is of order 2-3 nW/m^2/sr with a peak around 200 microns reaching 6-8 nW/m^2/sr. Our empirically derived background spectrum is fairly flat in the mid-IR, as opposed to spectra based on modeling with discrete temperatures which exhibit a "valley" in the mid-IR.     Pinyon-juniper fire regime: Natural range of variability

    In this study, we used a variety of methods to quantify and describe historical patterns of fire and forest structure in two pinyon-juniper ecosystems of the Southwest. Sites were located on the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona, south of Grand Canyon National Park (Tusayan), and on the Carson National Forest in New Mexico, north of Espanola (Canjilon). Methodological approaches included analysis of fire scars, contemporary forest structure, fire evidence, modern fire records, and forest reconstruction. GIS surface maps, constructed using inverse distance weighted interpolation, were used to assess spatial patterns of fire and forest structure. Results indicated distinct fire histories and recent forest changes at the two sites. At Tusayan, surface fires burned historically at frequencies of 7.2-7.4 years (Weibull median probability) in canyons and draws dominated by ponderosa pine. On uplands dominated by pinyon-juniper communities, longer point fire intervals suggested fires occurred at a mean frequency of 41.6 years. Point intervals stratified by species indicated longer return periods for Utah juniper than pinyon or ponderosa pine. Fire evidence in the form of charred tree structures was ubiquitous at the site and there was no clear relationship between stand age and fire evidence. Live, old trees (300 yr) were prevalent and averaged 26 trees per hectare (TPH). Stands were all ages up to 400 yr and patch sizes were generally small (30 ha). Reconstructions showed a moderate overall increase (39(percent)) in stand density since the late 19th century. Ponderosa pine increases were responsible for the majority of recent structural changes although pinyon density also had apparently increased. We found no evidence of extensive stand replacing fire over the last 400 years at Tusayan and concluded that the historical pattern has been one of frequent surface fires in ponderosa pine communities and small severe fires on pinyon-juniper uplands. At Canjilon, fire scar analysis showed longer mean fire intervals (81.1 yr), suggesting that infrequent crown fires or severe surface fires were an important component of the historical regime. Like Tusayan, charred structures were found across the Canjilon site, although they appeared to be more abundant at lower elevations where stands ages were younger. Few live old trees (300 yr) were found at the site (4.2 TPH). The site dominated by stands in the 200-250-yr and 250-300-yr age classes. Mean patch sizes for stands of these age classes were 24 and 79 ha, respectively. Reconstructions showed relatively greater increases in tree density (61(percent)) with Rocky Mountain juniper and pinyon pine both showing positive changes since the late 19th century. Evidence of stand replacing fire was seen along the eastern edge of the study site and young trees appeared to be encroaching into previously open areas, particularly around big sagebrush meadows. Woodland treatments that may parallel historical patterns of fire and forest structure at these sites include targeted tree thinning and/or use of prescribed fire to create canopy openings of various sizes

    Susceptibility of Selected Potato Varieties to Zebra Chip Potato Disease

    Zebra chip (ZC), an emerging and serious disease of potato has caused millions of dollars in losses to the potato industry in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and New Zealand. The disease has recently been associated with a previously undescribed species of liberibacter tentatively named “Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum” transmitted to potato by the potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli (Ơulc). At present, applications of insecticides targeted against the potato psyllid are the only means to manage ZC. Given the low psyllid density and short inoculation access period required to induce the disease, insecticides may not act fast enough to prevent transmission of liberibacter to potato by the psyllid and development of ZC. Identification and development of ZC-resistant or tolerant varieties may offer the most efficient and sustainable way to manage this potato disease. Susceptibility of selected potato varieties to ZC was evaluated under controlled field cage conditions in 2009 and 2010 in WA by inoculating potato plants with “Ca. L. solanacearum” using infective potato psyllids and monitoring them for ZC symptom development. All potato varieties evaluated in both years of the study were determined to be very susceptible to the disease, with almost 100% of the inoculated plants developing severe ZC foliar and tuber symptoms. Potato yield in all tested varieties was significantly affected by ZC, with yield losses ranging from 49.9% to 87. 2%. Information from this research suggests that there is an urgent need to develop new potato varieties that are resistant or tolerant to this damaging potato disease

    Blazars in the Fermi Era: The OVRO 40-m Telescope Monitoring Program

    The Large Area Telescope (LAT) aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope provides an unprecedented opportunity to study gamma-ray blazars. To capitalize on this opportunity, beginning in late 2007, about a year before the start of LAT science operations, we began a large-scale, fast-cadence 15 GHz radio monitoring program with the 40-m telescope at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). This program began with the 1158 northern (declination>-20 deg) sources from the Candidate Gamma-ray Blazar Survey (CGRaBS) and now encompasses over 1500 sources, each observed twice per week with a ~4 mJy (minimum) and 3% (typical) uncertainty. Here, we describe this monitoring program and our methods, and present radio light curves from the first two years (2008 and 2009). As a first application, we combine these data with a novel measure of light curve variability amplitude, the intrinsic modulation index, through a likelihood analysis to examine the variability properties of subpopulations of our sample. We demonstrate that, with high significance (7-sigma), gamma-ray-loud blazars detected by the LAT during its first 11 months of operation vary with about a factor of two greater amplitude than do the gamma-ray-quiet blazars in our sample. We also find a significant (3-sigma) difference between variability amplitude in BL Lacertae objects and flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), with the former exhibiting larger variability amplitudes. Finally, low-redshift (z<1) FSRQs are found to vary more strongly than high-redshift FSRQs, with 3-sigma significance. These findings represent an important step toward understanding why some blazars emit gamma-rays while others, with apparently similar properties, remain silent.Comment: 23 pages, 24 figures.     Progranulin signaling in sepsis, community-acquired bacterial pneumonia and COVID-19: a comparative, observational study

    BACKGROUND Progranulin is a widely expressed pleiotropic growth factor with a central regulatory effect during the early immune response in sepsis. Progranulin signaling has not been systematically studied and compared between sepsis, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), COVID-19 pneumonia and a sterile systemic inflammatory response (SIRS). We delineated molecular networks of progranulin signaling by next-generation sequencing (NGS), determined progranulin plasma concentrations and quantified the diagnostic performance of progranulin to differentiate between the above-mentioned disorders using the established biomarkers procalcitonin (PCT), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) for comparison. METHODS The diagnostic performance of progranulin was operationalized by calculating AUC and ROC statistics for progranulin and established biomarkers in 241 patients with sepsis, 182 patients with SIRS, 53 patients with CAP, 22 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and 53 healthy volunteers. miRNAs and mRNAs in blood cells from sepsis patients (n = 7) were characterized by NGS and validated by RT-qPCR in an independent cohort (n = 39) to identify canonical gene networks associated with upregulated progranulin at sepsis onset. RESULTS Plasma concentrations of progranulin (ELISA) in patients with sepsis were 57.5 (42.8-84.9, Q25-Q75) ng/ml and significantly higher than in CAP (38.0, 33.5-41.0~ng/ml, p < 0.001), SIRS (29.0, 25.0-35.0~ng/ml, p < 0.001) and the healthy state (28.7, 25.5-31.7~ng/ml, p < 0.001). Patients with COVID-19 had significantly higher progranulin concentrations than patients with CAP (67.6, 56.6-96.0 vs. 38.0, 33.5-41.0~ng/ml, p < 0.001). The diagnostic performance of progranulin for the differentiation between sepsis vs. SIRS (n = 423) was comparable to that of procalcitonin. AUC was 0.90 (95% CI = 0.87-0.93) for progranulin and 0.92 (CI = 0.88-0.96, p = 0.323) for procalcitonin. Progranulin showed high discriminative power to differentiate bacterial CAP from COVID-19 (sensitivity 0.91, specificity 0.94, AUC 0.91 (CI = 0.8-1.0) and performed significantly better than PCT, IL-6 and CRP. NGS and partial RT-qPCR confirmation revealed a transcriptomic network of immune cells with upregulated progranulin and sortilin transcripts as well as toll-like-receptor 4 and tumor-protein 53, regulated by miR-16 and others. CONCLUSIONS Progranulin signaling is elevated during the early antimicrobial response in sepsis and differs significantly between sepsis, CAP, COVID-19 and SIRS. This suggests that progranulin may serve as a novel indicator for the differentiation between these disorders.     Overexpression of CYB5R3 and NQO1, Two NAD\u3csup\u3e+\u3c/sup\u3e-Producing Enzymes, Mimics Aspects of Caloric Restriction

    Calorie restriction (CR) is one of the most robust means to improve health and survival in model organisms. CR imposes a metabolic program that leads to increased stress resistance and delayed onset of chronic diseases, including cancer. In rodents, CR induces the upregulation of two NADH‐dehydrogenases, namely NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (Nqo1) and cytochrome b5 reductase 3 (Cyb5r3), which provide electrons for energy metabolism. It has been proposed that this upregulation may be responsible for some of the beneficial effects of CR, and defects in their activity are linked to aging and several age‐associated diseases. However, it is unclear whether changes in metabolic homeostasis solely through upregulation of these NADH‐dehydrogenases have a positive impact on health and survival. We generated a mouse that overexpresses both metabolic enzymes leading to phenotypes that resemble aspects of CR including a modest increase in lifespan, greater physical performance, a decrease in chronic inflammation, and, importantly, protection against carcinogenesis, one of the main hallmarks of CR. Furthermore, these animals showed an enhancement of metabolic flexibility and a significant upregulation of the NAD+/sirtuin pathway. The results highlight the importance of these NAD+ producers for the promotion of health and extended lifespan
