Research advances in Risaralda. An overview of 8 experiences

    Get PDF
I am honored to present to you this remarkable book, a testament to the invaluable research conducted in the fields of Health, Law, Engineering, and Administrative Sciences. Each chapter within these pages represents the culmination of extensive investigations carried out by dedicated scholars affiliated with the Red Universitaria de Risaralda (RUN), a network comprising 15 esteemed higher education institutions. Risaralda has emerged as a thriving hub for higher education, bolstered by its strategic geographical location, high quality of life, rich biodiversity, and competitive development. Today, Pereira ranks third in the index of university cities, with a student enrollment rate exceeding 63%. Close to 50,000 students pursue academic programs within the department. Notably, three institutions have achieved accreditation for their excellence in education, positioning Risaralda among the most competitive regions in terms of accredited academic programs. As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Red Universitaria de Risaralda in 2023, it is with great pride that we reflect on its pivotal role in fostering collaboration among public and private higher education institutions. Our mission has been twofold: attracting students to our region and supporting sustainable development and quality of life for our community. The mesa de investigación (research committee) has diligently coordinated the necessary actions to unite our researchers, facilitating an integrated approach to various disciplines and themes associated with the challenges faced in our region.CONTENT Introduction...................................................................................................................5 CHAPTER ONE.

    No full text
The main focus is to determine the trade-off between the reliability and operational costs of distribution networks when the operation of isolated areas is allowed. The model searches to minimize the network costs by mean of optimal settings of the active power delivered from the power sources connected to the grid. Meanwhile the voltage regulation and the overload condition at the substation transformer and the grid lines are guaranteed. Simultaneously, the type and location of the protective devices initially installed on the protection system are reconfigured in order to minimize the interruption cost, as well as the expenditure for adjusting the protection system to the conditions imposed by the operation of dispersed units. In addition, in order to increase the system reliability, the model attempts to minimize the cost of the energy not supplied to customers due to normal tripping of the protection system in the elimination of temporary faults, as well as the isolation of permanent faults. This calculation takes into account the type of customer being affected by such normal tripping. The isolated operation of dispersed generation is allowed by installing directional overcurrent relays with synchronized reclose capability. The results for a 135-bus real-life power system are presented in order to evidence the advantage of the proposed mode

In this paper a detailed description of the simulated annealing algorithm is presented. This strategy was employed to solve a well know flow-shop problem, which behavior is featured by the combinatorial explosion and non linear modeling. Therefore, the strategy could be focused to analyze the efficiency of the production in facilities with limited resources. Simulations results performed in a problem in the literature are presented. By this mean, the wide versatility, efficiency, and the easy implementation of the proposed algorithm is verified.

NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

    No full text
Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics.
