A review of the recent results on measurements of top quark properties in single top quark events using data samples of proton proton collisions produced by the LHC at sqrt(s) = 7 and 8 TeV and collected by ATLAS and CMS detectors is presented, including the top quark polarization, the W boson helicity, searches for anomalous Wtb couplings and the top quark mass. The measurements are in good agreement with predictions and no deviations from Standard Model expectations have been observed.Comment: TOP2016 conference proceeding

Live Demonstration: Real-time neuro-inspired sound source localization and tracking architecture applied to a robotic platform

    Get PDF
This live demonstration presents a sound source localization and tracking system implemented with Spike Signal Processing (SSP) building blocks on FPGA devices. The system architecture is based on the ability of the mammalian auditory system to locate the direction of a sound in the horizontal plane using the interaural intensity difference. We used a binaural Neuromorphic Auditory Sensor to obtain spike rates similar to those generated by the inner hair cells of the human auditory system and the component that obtains the interaural intensity difference is inspired by the lateral superior olive. The spike stream that represents the interaural intensity difference is used to turn a robotic platform towards the sound source direction. The system was tested with pure tones (1-kHz, 2.5-kHz and 5- kHz sounds) with an average error of 2.32 degrees.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016-77785-

On the AER Stereo-Vision Processing: A Spike Approach to Epipolar Matching

    Get PDF
Image processing in digital computer systems usually considers visual information as a sequence of frames. These frames are from cameras that capture reality for a short period of time. They are renewed and transmitted at a rate of 25-30 fps (typical real-time scenario). Digital video processing has to process each frame in order to detect a feature on the input. In stereo vision, existing algorithms use frames from two digital cameras and process them pixel by pixel until it finds a pattern match in a section of both stereo frames. To process stereo vision information, an image matching process is essential, but it needs very high computational cost. Moreover, as more information is processed, the more time spent by the matching algorithm, the more inefficient it is. Spike-based processing is a relatively new approach that implements processing by manipulating spikes one by one at the time they are transmitted, like a human brain. The mammal nervous system is able to solve much more complex problems, such as visual recognition by manipulating neuron’s spikes. The spike-based philosophy for visual information processing based on the neuro-inspired Address-Event- Representation (AER) is achieving nowadays very high performances. The aim of this work is to study the viability of a matching mechanism in a stereo-vision system, using AER codification. This kind of mechanism has not been done before to an AER system. To do that, epipolar geometry basis applied to AER system are studied, and several tests are run, using recorded data and a computer. The results and an average error are shown (error less than 2 pixels per point); and the viability is proved

Event-based control system on FPGA applied to the pencil balancer robotic platform

    Get PDF
An event-based motor controller design is presented. The system is designed to solve the classic inverted pendulum problem by using a robotic platform and a totally neuro-inspired event-based mechanism. Specifically, DVS retinas provide feedback and an FPGA implements control. The robotic platform used is the so called ’pencil balancer’. The retinas provide visual information to the FPGA that processes it and obtains the center of mass of the pencil. Once this center of mass is averaged over time, it is used joint with the cart position provided by a flat potentiometer bar to compute the angle of the pencil from the vertical. The angle is delivered to an eventbased Proportional-Derivative (PD) controller that drives the DC motor using Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) to accomplish the control objective. The results show an accurate, real-time and efficient controller design

Current situation and historical evolution of the study and research of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Spain. A tale of bleeding bites

    Get PDF
The black flies are nematocerous dipterans belonging to the Simuliidae family. This group of insects has become highly relevant in certain regions of the country since 1995. These insects, considered typical in natural lotic environments of clean fresh water, have colonized water channels of very different dimensions. They are currently present in most of the water courses around the country, as demonstrated in the Valencian Autonomous Region, where they can be found in headwaters, middle stretches and river mouths, as well as in irrigation systems with greater or lesser water permanence, such as irrigation reservoirs, channels and ditches. Since 2017 different regions of the country have increasingly suffered the discomforts characteristic of this arthropod, whose females cause serious damage to the human population with their bites. In this paper is studied deeply the current situation and historical evolution of the study and research of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Spain. Making special emphasis on publications as well as on oral and posters communications carried out about this important arthropod informing about the timeline and of the different and diverse issues studied

Analyzing the effect of health reforms on the efficiency of Ecuadorian public hospitals

This collection includes a selection of research by students of the PhD Program in Applied Economics (UAB) and the Master of Applied Research in Economics and Business (MAREB) - specialization in Applied EconomicsThis study aims to assess whether Ecuadorian health reforms carried out since 2008 have affected the efficiency performance of public hospitals in the country. We contribute to the literature by shed-ding new light on the effects on public healthcare efficiency for developing countries when policies move toward health equity and universal coverage. We follow of a two-stage approach, wherein the first stage we make use of factor and cluster analysis to obtain three clusters of public hospitals based on their technological endowment; we exploit Data Envelopment Analysis for panel data in the second stage to estimate robust efficiency measures over time. Our innovative empirical strategy considers the heterogeneity of healthcare institutions in the analysis of their efficiency performance. The results show a significant decrease in the average efficiency of low and intermediate technology hospitals after the new constitution was adopted in 2008. The decline in efficiency coincides with the two reforms of 2010 and 2011 that brought on higher social security coverage

El eslogan político español en la campaña de elecciones generales de 2008.

The slogan is a phrase that synthesises the strategy of an electoral campaign: it’s a sharp message that shows the most relevant values of a candidate or a political party. It also grasps the audience attention and summarises the promised benefits. Political parties, as commercial enterprises, do always use a motto that identifies the organisation and its leader, a message repeated in every public event, in every sign, in every outdoor, in every television spot. This article studies the Spanish political slogan, with special attention to the innovations of the last call for general elections.
