Role of Androgens in Cardiovascular Diseases in Men: A Comprehensive Review

    Get PDF
The present knowledge on the androgens role in cardiovascular physiology is not fully completed. It remains unclear whether low serum testosterone concentrations in men are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) or a marker of the presence of CVD. However, we demonstrated that endogenous testosterone levels may be implicated in CVDs. Androgens role in modulating cardiovascular function is one of the highest importances, given that its deficiency is strongly associated with hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity, and cardiac hypertrophy. Although significant and independent association between testosterone levels and cardiovascular events in elderly men have not been confirmed in large prospective studies, cross-sectional studies, however, suggested that low testosterone levels in elderly men are associated with CVDs. The results of androgen therapy are not also conclusive. Perhaps, the effects of testosterone treatment of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity have not been extensively examined in control studies. Data on male animal experimentation of the effect of testosterone replacement therapy are either neutral or beneficial on the development of atherosclerosis. Since circulatory androgen levels modulation is expected to cause many other side effects, it seems to be essential to develop a strategy to target androgen receptor for better treating the CVDs

The Human Resources Department of Asian American Community Services in Columbus, Ohio: A Critical Examination

This paper provides a critical examination of the Human Resources Department of AACS to find out whether a well designed and functional Human Resources Department is a prerequisite of the high performance of an organization or not. The literature review illustrates the traditional and modern roles of the Human Resources Management and its important role for ensuring high performance of any organization. The email correspondence for survey questionnaire with eight employees and volunteers working in different capacities in the organization, the follow-up interviews and the AACS’s Employee Handbook were used and reviewed to gather data. Using the model of Ulrich’s four pillars, several arguments are made. The paper finds that AACS has the lack of funding that creates a weak organizational set up and various challenges such as understaffing, low staff motivation, long term strategic planning etc. The paper suggests that the high performance of AACS can be possible if a more structured and functional Human Resources Department is taken place. The paper concludes that AACS needs a good system like any other organization, through a well designed Human Resources Department and a functional Human Resource policy and program that includes training and development, legal compliance, selection, staffing and recruiting, internal communication, organizational development, labor relation, performance assessment and human resources planning

CD10 positive recurrent undifferentiated mammary sarcoma in a young female: a rare case report with brief review of literature

Undifferentiated mammary sarcoma is extremely rare and the diagnosis is made only after exclusion of metaplastic carcinomas and malignant phyllodes tumor. Mammary sarcomas mostly display specified entities like liposarcomas or angiosarcomas. A 18-year-old female presented in 2010 with a right breast lump for which lumpectomy was done and on histopathological examination benign phyllodes tumor was diagnosed. In 2011, there was a recurrence at site of excised margin and on fine needle aspiration (FNA) the diagnosis of benign breast disease was made; a small biopsy was received for which diagnosis of myoepithelial lesion was given. Then, the whole mass was excised, but histopathological examination report could not be followed up. In 2013, she again presented with a mass arising from the previously excised margin; on FNA, it was diagnosed as malignant sarcomatous lesion. Microscopy showed spindle shaped cells in diffuse and fascicular pattern with plump ovoid nuclei; coarse chromatin and eosinophilic cytoplasm were seen. Few round to ovoid cells with eccentric nuclei and showing bi- or multi-nucleation were present. Large area of necrosis and hemorrhage was present, too. No breast glands were found. Later on, diagnosis was confirmed on immunohistochemical examination. The case was considered worth due to the young age of the patient and lack of differentiation of the lesion in any specific type of sarcoma and CD10 positivity
