    Investigation of FlexAlgo for User-driven Path Control

    This paper examines the Flexible Algorithm (FlexAlgo) for its potential to enable user-driven path control in intra-domain Segment Routing (SR) enabled networks. FlexAlgo is a relatively new approach to intra-domain routing that allows multiple custom algorithms to coexist within a single domain. This capability has the potential to provide users with greater control over the paths their data takes through a network. The research includes a thorough investigation of the FlexAlgo approach, including an examination of its underlying techniques, as well as a practical implementation of a FlexAlgo-based solution. We depict performed experiments where we implemented FlexAlgo in three different scenarios. We also present how we developed an automated tool for users to control traffic steering using preferred metrics and constraints. The results of this investigation demonstrate the capabilities of FlexAlgo as a means of enabling user-driven path control and therefore increase security and trust of users towards the network.</p

    The combined effect of surface texturing and DLC coating on the functional properties of internal combustion engines

    A reduction in frictional loss is an important aspect of efficiency in high-performance internal combustion engines. This can be achieved by the well-designed surface texturing of the cylinder bore, which can reduce friction at the ring/bore interface. In this work, dimples were created using plastic deformation on the cylinder surfaces of high-performance motorcycle engines. Prior to texturing, these cylinders had Nikasil coating. One cylinder was subjected to the deposition of DLC coating and then surface texturing. The results of the functional performance of internal combustion engines with textured cylinder surfaces were compared to untextured ones. The engine performance was analysed in terms of maximum power and maximum torque output. The results showed that cylinder surface texturing improved the functional properties of internal combustion engines. The maximum power increased by up to 5.8%. Best performance was achieved for internal combustion engines with textured cylinders and DLC coating. Such surface modification allows the powering of the motorbike with higher maximum speed and provides better vehicle dynamics at high speeds

    Glassy dynamics in mono-, di-, and tri-propylene glycol: From the alpha- to the fast beta-relaxation

    We present a thorough characterization of the glassy dynamics of three propylene glycols (mono-, di- and trimer) by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. By covering a frequency range of more than 15 decades, we have access to the entire variety of dynamic processes typical for glassy dynamics. These results add three more molecular glass formers to the sparse list of materials for which real broadband spectra, including the region of the fast beta-process, are available. Some first analyses of the various observed dynamic processes are provided

    High-frequency dynamics of type-B glass formers investigated by broadband dielectric spectroscopy

    We present the results of broadband dielectric spectroscopy on two glass formers with strong Johari-Goldstein beta-relaxations. In addition to the alpha- and beta-relaxation dynamics, the extension of the spectra up to 1 THz also allows revealing information on the fast beta-process in this class of materials. There is clear evidence for a fast process contributing in the region of the high-frequency loss minimum, which is analyzed in terms of the idealized mode-coupling theory.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    A prospective survey in European Society of Cardiology member countries of atrial fibrillation management: baseline results of EURO bservational Research Programme Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF) Pilot General Registry

    Aims: Given the advances in atrial fibrillation (AF) management and the availability of new European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines, there is a need for the systematic collection of contemporary data regarding the management and treatment of AF in ESC member countries. Methods and results: We conducted a registry of consecutive in- and outpatients with AF presenting to cardiologists in nine participating ESC countries. All patients with an ECG-documented diagnosis of AF confirmed in the year prior to enrolment were eligible. We enroled a total of 3119 patients from February 2012 to March 2013, with full data on clinical subtype available for 3049 patients (40.4% female; mean age 68.8 years). Common comorbidities were hypertension, coronary disease, and heart failure. Lone AF was present in only 3.9% (122 patients). Asymptomatic AF was common, particularly among those with permanent AF. Amiodarone was the most common antiarrhythmic agent used (~20%), while beta-blockers and digoxin were the most used rate control drugs. Oral anticoagulants (OACs) were used in 80% overall, most often vitamin K antagonists (71.6%), with novel OACs being used in 8.4%. Other antithrombotics (mostly antiplatelet therapy, especially aspirin) were still used in one-third of the patients, and no antithrombotic treatment in only 4.8%. Oral anticoagulants were used in 56.4% of CHA 2DS2-VASc = 0, with 26.3% having no antithrombotic therapy. A high HAS-BLED score was not used to exclude OAC use, but there was a trend towards more aspirin use in the presence of a high HAS-BLED score. Conclusion: The EURObservational Research Programme Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF) Pilot Registry has provided systematic collection of contemporary data regarding the management and treatment of AF by cardiologists in ESC member countries. Oral anticoagulant use has increased, but novel OAC use was still low. Compliance with the treatment guidelines for patients with the lowest and higher stroke risk scores remains suboptimal. © The Author 2013

    The role of JAK/STAT signalling in the pathogenesis, prognosis and treatment of solid tumours

    Aberrant activation of intracellular signalling pathways confers malignant properties on cancer cells. Targeting intracellular signalling pathways has been a productive strategy for drug development, with several drugs acting on signalling pathways already in use and more continually being developed. The JAK/STAT signalling pathway provides an example of this paradigm in haematological malignancies, with the identification of JAK2 mutations in myeloproliferative neoplasms leading to the development of specific clinically effective JAK2 inhibitors, such as ruxolitinib. It is now clear that many solid tumours also show activation of JAK/STAT signalling. In this review, we focus on the role of JAK/STAT signalling in solid tumours, examining the molecular mechanisms that cause inappropriate pathway activation and their cellular consequences. We also discuss the degree to which activated JAK/STAT signalling contributes to oncogenesis. Studies showing the effect of activation of JAK/STAT signalling upon prognosis in several tumour types are summarised. Finally, we discuss the prospects for treating solid tumours using strategies targeting JAK/STAT signalling, including what can be learned from haematological malignancies and the extent to which results in solid tumours might be expected to differ
