VLBI2010 - The TWIN radio telescope project at Wettzell, Germany
The Twin Telescope Wettzell (TTW) Project is funded to be exec
uted during the period of 2008-2011. The design of the TTW was based on the VLBI2010 vision of the corresponding IVS Working Group. In the first two project years the design passed the simulations with respect to its specifications and was approved for production. At the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell a thorough soil analysis was made in order to define the sites for the towers of the new radio telescopes. Meanwhile the construction work has begun and acceptance tests of several telescope parts, e.g. azimuth bearings, took place. The full assembly of the radio telescopes is scheduled for the next two years. In parallel to the construction work at the Wettzell site, the design work for the different feed options progressed
Charge and current-sensitive preamplifiers for pulse shape discrimination techniques with silicon detectors
New charge and current-sensitive preamplifiers coupled to silicon detectors
and devoted to studies in nuclear structure and dynamics have been developed
and tested. For the first time shapes of current pulses from light charged
particles and carbon ions are presented. Capabilities for pulse shape

Risk stratification and response to therapy in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and comorbidities: A COMPERA analysis
Background: A diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is frequently made in elderly patients who present with comorbidities, especially hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and obesity. It is unknown to what extent the presence of these comorbidities affects the response to PAH therapies and whether risk stratification predicts outcome in patients with comorbidities.
Methods: We assessed the database of COMPERA, a European pulmonary hypertension registry, to determine changes after initiation of PAH therapy in WHO functional class (FC), 6-minute walking distance (6MWD), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) or N-terminal fragment of probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP), and mortality risk assessed by a 4-strata model in patients with IPAH and no comorbidities, 1-2 comorbidities and 3-4 comorbidities.
Results: The analysis was based on 1,120 IPAH patients (n = 208 [19%] without comorbidities, n = 641 [57%] with 1-2 comorbidities, and n = 271 [24%] with 3-4 comorbidities). Improvements in FC, 6MWD, BNP/NT-pro-BNP, and mortality risk from baseline to first follow-up were significantly larger in patients with no comorbidities than in patients with comorbidities, while they were not significantly different in patients with 1-2 and 3-4 comorbidities. The 4-strata risk tool predicted survival in patients without comorbidities as well as in patients with 1-2 or 3-4 comorbidities.
Conclusions: Our data suggest that patients with IPAH and comorbidities benefit from PAH medication with improvements in FC, 6MWD, BNP/NT-pro-BNP, and mortality risk, albeit to a lesser extent than patients without comorbidities. The 4-strata risk tool predicted outcome in patients with IPAH irrespective of the presence of comorbidities
Application of the Pulse-Shape Technique to Proton-Alpha Discrimination in Si-Detector Arrays
Physically Large Displays Improve Path Integration
ABSTRACT Previous results have shown that users perform better on spatial orientation tasks involving static 2D scenes when working on physically large displays as compared to small ones. This was found to be true even when the displays presented the same images at equivalent visual angles. Further investigation has suggested that large displays may provide a greater sense of presence, which biases users into adopting more efficient strategies to perform tasks. In this work, we extend those findings, demonstrating that users are more effective at performing 3D virtual navigation tasks on large displays. We also show that even though interacting with the environment affects performance, effects induced by interactivity are independent of those induced by physical display size. Together, these findings allow us to derive guidelines for the design and presentation of interactive 3D environments on physically large displays
No First-Order Phase Transition in the Gross-Neveu Model?
Within a variational calculation we investigate the role of baryons for the
structure of dense matter in the Gross-Neveu model. We construct a trial ground
state at finite baryon density which breaks translational invariance. Its
scalar potential interpolates between widely spaced kinks and antikinks at low
density and the value zero at infinite density. Its energy is lower than the
one of the standard Fermi gas at all densities considered. This suggests that
the discrete gamma_5 symmetry of the Gross-Neveu model does not get restored in
a first order phase transition at finite density, at variance with common

Fungal cryptochrome with DNA repair activity reveals an early stage in cryptochrome evolution
DASH (Drosophila, Arabidopsis, Synechocystis, Human)-type cryp- tochromes (cry-DASH) belong to a family of flavoproteins acting as repair enzymes for UV-B–induced DNA lesions (photolyases) or as UV-A/blue light photoreceptors (cryptochromes). They are present in plants, bacteria, various vertebrates, and fungi and were originally considered as sensory photoreceptors because of their incapability to repair cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) lesions in duplex DNA. However, cry-DASH can repair CPDs in single-stranded DNA, but their role in DNA repair in vivo remains to be clarified. The genome of the fungus Phycomyces blakesleeanus contains a single gene for a protein of the cryptochrome/photolyase family (CPF) encoding a cry-DASH, cryA, despite its ability to photoreactivate. Here, we show that cryA expression is induced by blue light in a Mad complex-dependent man- ner. Moreover, we demonstrate that CryA is capable of binding flavin (FAD) and methenyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF), fully complements the Escherichia coli photolyase mutant and repairs in vitro CPD lesions in single-stranded and double-stranded DNA with the same efficiency. Emergence of Skyrme crystal in Gross-Neveu and 't Hooft models at finite density
We study two-dimensional, large field theoretic models (Gross-Neveu
model, 't Hooft model) at finite baryon density near the chiral limit. The same
mechanism which leads to massless baryons in these models induces a breakdown
of translational invariance at any finite density. In the chiral limit baryonic
matter is characterized by a spatially varying chiral angle with a wave number
depending only on the density. For small bare quark masses a sine-Gordon kink
chain is obtained which may be regarded as simplest realization of the Skyrme
crystal for nuclear matter. Characteristic differences between confining and
