A method to estimate trends in distributions of 1 min rain rates from numerical weather prediction data
It is known that the rain rate exceeded 0.01% of the time in the UK has experienced an increasing trend over the last 20 years. It is very likely that rain fade and outage experience a similar trend. This paper presents a globally applicable method to estimate these trends, based on the widely accepted Salonen-Poiares Baptista model. The input data are parameters easily extracted from numerical weather prediction reanalysis data. The method is verified using rain gauge data from the UK, and the predicted trend slopes of 0.01% exceeded rain rate are presented on a global grid
Introduction to the computational structural mechanics testbed
The Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) testbed software system based on the SPAR finite element code and the NICE system is described. This software is denoted NICE/SPAR. NICE was developed at Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory and contains data management utilities, a command language interpreter, and a command language definition for integrating engineering computational modules. SPAR is a system of programs used for finite element structural analysis developed for NASA by Lockheed and Engineering Information Systems, Inc. It includes many complementary structural analysis, thermal analysis, utility functions which communicate through a common database. The work on NICE/SPAR was motivated by requirements for a highly modular and flexible structural analysis system to use as a tool in carrying out research in computational methods and exploring computer hardware. Analysis examples are presented which demonstrate the benefits gained from a combination of the NICE command language with a SPAR computational modules

Rubidium and lead abundances in giant stars of the globular clusters M4 and M5
We present measurements of the neutron-capture elements Rb and Pb for bright
giants in the globular clusters M4 and M5. The clusters are of similar
metallicity ([Fe/H] = -1.2) but M4 is decidedly s-process enriched relative to
M5: [Ba/Fe] = +0.6 for M4 but 0.0 for M5. The Rb and Pb abundances were derived
by comparing synthetic spectra with high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio
spectra obtained with MIKE on the Magellan telescope. Abundances of Y, Zr, La,
and Eu were also obtained. In M4, the mean abundances from 12 giants are
[Rb/Fe] = 0.39 +/- 0.02 (sigma = 0.07), [Rb/Zr] = 0.17 +/- 0.03 (sigma = 0.08),
and [Pb/Fe] = 0.30 +/- 0.02 (sigma = 0.07). In M5, the mean abundances from two
giants are [Rb/Fe] = 0.00 +/- 0.05 (sigma = 0.06), [Rb/Zr] = 0.08 +/- 0.08
(sigma = 0.11), and [Pb/Fe] = -0.35 +/- 0.02 (sigma = 0.04). Within the
measurement uncertainties, the abundance ratios [Rb/Fe], [Pb/Fe] and [Rb/X] for
X = Y, Zr, La are constant from star-to-star in each cluster and none of these
ratios are correlated with O or Na abundances. While M4 has a higher Rb
abundance than M5, the ratios [Rb/X] are similar in both clusters indicating
that the nature of the s-products are very similar for each cluster but the gas
from which M4's stars formed had a higher concentration of these products.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
Confirmation of the Planet Hypothesis for the Long-period Radial Velocity Variations of Beta Geminorum
We present precise stellar radial velocity measurements for the K giant star
Beta Gem spanning over 25 years. These data show that the long period low
amplitude radial velocity variations found by Hatzes & Cochran (1993) are
long-lived and coherent. An examination of the Ca II K emission, spectral line
shapes from high resolution data (R = 210,000), and Hipparcos photometry show
no significant variations of these quantities with the RV period. These data
confirm the planetary companion hypothesis suggested by Hatzes & Cochran
(1993). An orbital solution assuming a stellar mass of 1.7 M_sun yields a
period, P = 589.6 days, a minimum mass of 2.3 M_Jupiter, and a semi-major axis,
and a = 1.6 AU. The orbit is nearly circular (e = 0.02). Beta Gem is the
seventh intermediate mass star shown to host a sub-stellar companion and
suggests that planet-formation around stars much more massive than the sun may

Formalising Mathematics in Simple Type Theory
Despite the considerable interest in new dependent type theories, simple type
theory (which dates from 1940) is sufficient to formalise serious topics in
mathematics. This point is seen by examining formal proofs of a theorem about
stereographic projections. A formalisation using the HOL Light proof assistant
is contrasted with one using Isabelle/HOL. Harrison's technique for formalising
Euclidean spaces is contrasted with an approach using Isabelle/HOL's axiomatic
type classes. However, every formal system can be outgrown, and mathematics
should be formalised with a view that it will eventually migrate to a new
formalism
s-Processing in the Galactic Disk. I. Super-Solar Abundances of Y, Zr, La, Ce in Young Open Clusters
In a recent study, based on homogeneous barium abundance measurements in open
clusters, a trend of increasing [Ba/Fe] ratios for decreasing cluster age was
reported. We present here further abundance determinations, relative to four
other elements hav- ing important s-process contributions, with the aim of
investigating whether the growth found for [Ba/Fe] is or not indicative of a
general property, shared also by the other heavy elements formed by slow
neutron captures. In particular, we derived abundances for yttrium, zirconium,
lanthanum and cerium, using equivalent widths measurements and the MOOG code.
Our sample includes 19 open clusters of different ages, for which the spectra
were obtained at the ESO VLT telescope, using the UVES spectrometer. The growth
previously suggested for Ba is confirmed for all the elements analyzed in our
study. This fact implies significant changes in our views of the Galactic
chemical evolution for elements beyond iron. Our results necessarily require
that very low-mass AGB stars (M < 1.5M\odot) produce larger amounts of
s-process elements (hence acti- vate the 13 C-neutron source more effectively)
than previously expected. Their role in producing neutron-rich elements in the
Galactic disk has been so far underestimated and their evolution and
neutron-capture nucleosynthesis should now be reconsidered.Comment: ApJ accepte
