Customized design of hearing aids using statistical shape learning
3D shape modeling is a crucial component of rapid prototyping systems
that customize shapes of implants and prosthetic devices to a patient’s
anatomy. In this paper, we present a solution to the problem of customized 3D
shape modeling using a statistical shape analysis framework. We design a novel
method to learn the relationship between two classes of shapes, which are related
by certain operations or transformation. The two associated shape classes are
represented in a lower dimensional manifold, and the reduced set of parameters
obtained in this subspace is utilized in an estimation, which is exemplified by a
multivariate regression in this paper.We demonstrate our method with a felicitous
application to estimation of customized hearing aid devices
Managing strategic challenges in community sector organisations
Like those in other sectors, managers in community-based organisations face an uncertain and challenging future. Research and writing about the community sector (non-government, notjor-profit, or third seclOr) has canvassed a wide range of issues. A selective review of the recent literature reveals the breadth of research interest in the challenges facing community sector managers. While some reflection on the implications for managers of current economic and social policy contexts is crucial for this sector, research effort needs to be focused on understanding how third sector managers construe their current strategic challenges and the strategies they use to address them A small sample ofmanagers working in a regional area in South East Queensland was asked to identify current strategic concerns related to the future viability of their organisations. The key issues raised by managers are compared with the issues raised in the research literature. Results -to date indicate that managers' concerns are reflected in the research literature, but that managers are also concemed about the current trends in social policy towards collaboration, amalgamation, and pannership. Implications of these findings for managers operating in this sector are discussed
New public management, innovation, and the non-profit domain: New forms of organizing and professional identity
In this chapter follows a brief description of various aspects of the New Public Management (NPM) agenda with a discussion of the impact of these initiatives in the service delivery environment. A number of factors compel service organizations to innovate new forms of service delivery and viability. As with many such initiatives and associated policy rhetoric, the reality of putting such strategies into action presents considerable challenges. The author discusses some of the implications of these reforms for the role of governments in service delivery, for organizations in the non-profit sector, and for the roles and identities of professionals
Relaxation in the 3D ordered CoTAC spin chain by quantum nucleation of 0D domain walls
We have shown that resonant quantum tunnelling of the magnetisation (QTM),
until now observed only in 0D cluster systems (SMMs), occurs in the molecular
Ising spin chain, CoTAC ([(CH_3)_3NH]CoCl_3 - 2H_2O) which orders as a canted
3D-antiferromagnet at T_C=4.15 K. This effect was observed around a resonant
like field value of 1025 Oe. We present here measurements of the relaxation of
the magnetisation as a function of time, from the zero field cooled (ZFC)
antiferromagnet state and from the saturated ferromagnet state. We show that,
at the resonant field, the relaxation from the saturated state occurs in a
complicated process, whereas, surprisingly, in the case of the ZFC state, the

TRPC Channels in the Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Renal Tubular System: What Do We Know?
The study of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels has dramatically increased during
the past few years. TRP channels function as sensors and effectors in the cellular adaptation to
environmental changes. Here, we review literature investigating the physiological and pathophysiological roles of TRPC channels in the renal tubular system with a focus on TRPC3 and TRPC6.
TRPC3 plays a key role in Ca2+ homeostasis and is involved in transcellular Ca2+ reabsorption in the
proximal tubule and the collecting duct. TRPC3 also conveys the osmosensitivity of principal cells of
the collecting duct and is implicated in vasopressin-induced membrane translocation of AQP-2. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) can often be attributed to mutations of the PKD2
gene. TRPC3 is supposed to have a detrimental role in ADPKD-like conditions. The tubule-specific
physiological functions of TRPC6 have not yet been entirely elucidated. Its pathophysiological role
in ischemia-reperfusion injuries is a subject of debate. However, TRPC6 seems to be involved in
tumorigenesis of renal cell carcinoma. In summary, TRPC channels are relevant in multiples conditions of the renal tubular system. There is a need to further elucidate their pathophysiology to
better understand certain renal disorders and ultimately create new therapeutic targets to improve
patient care
Superconducting phase diagram of the filled skuterrudite PrOs4Sb12
We present new measurements of the specific heat of the heavy fermion
superconductor PrOs4Sb12, on a sample which exhibits two sharp distinct
anomalies at Tc1= 1.89K and Tc2= 1.72K. They are used to draw a precise
magnetic field-temperature superconducting phase diagram of PrOs4Sb12 down to
350 mK.
We discuss the superconducting phase diagram of PrOs4Sb12 and its possible
relation with an unconventional superconducting order parameter. We give a
detailed analysis of Hc2(T), which shows paramagnetic limitation (a support for
even parity pairing) and multiband effects
