    The Role of Family Obligations and School Adjustment in Explaining the Immigrant Paradox

    This study examined the role of family obligations and school adjustment in explaining immigrant adolescents’ adaptation. Despite a relatively low socio-economic status, immigrant adolescents have been found to have a pattern of adaptation superior to that of national adolescents. Immigrant adolescents’ strong sense of family obligations and positive school adjustment have been used to explain these positive adaptation outcomes. Using self-reports in a sample of 277 national adolescents (45.5% female) and a sample of 175 non-western immigrant adolescents (58.9% female), both samples with a mean age of 15 years, it was found that despite a lower socio-economic status, the adaptation of immigrant adolescents was as good as the nationals’ adaptation. Immigrant adolescents scored higher on family obligations and school adjustment. Family obligations and school adjustment were found positively related to adaptation outcomes in the national and the immigrant adolescent sample. Findings suggest that, in underprivileged environments, a strong sense of family obligations may help immigrants as well as national adolescents achieve a positive pattern of adaptation

    Helping behaviour during cooperative learning and learning gains

    Is helping behaviour (i.e., solicited help and peer tutoring) during cooperative learning (CL) related to subsequent learning gains? And can teachers influence pupils’ helping behaviour? One hundred one 5th grade pupils from multiethnic schools, 10-12 years old, participated in the study. Forty two pupils (31 immigrant) worked in an experimental condition, characterized by the stimulation of solicited high quality help and 59 (24 immigrant) worked in a control condition. It was found that learning gains were predicted positively by pupils’ unsolicited helping behaviour (i.e., peer tutoring) and negatively by solicited help. Furthermore, teachers were able to affect pupils’ low quality solicited help only. Lastly, immigrant pupils used less helping behaviour than local pupils, irrespective of CL setting

    Quality of group interaction, ethnic group composition, and individual mathematical learning gains

    High-quality helping behavior is essential for effective peer interaction and learning. This study focused on ethnic group composition and the quality of group interaction as predictors of individual mathematics performance. Video-observations of 92 fifth-grade students working in groups balanced on mathematics performance level were analyzed. We expected a difference in the quality of interaction and test scores of native and non-native students. Multilevel analysis identified process regulation and giving answers as positive predictors of mathematics performance, whereas giving or applying explanations contributed negatively. Non-native students generally had lower achievement scores than native students. Non-native students working in ethnically heterogeneous groups performed better than did students working in homogenous groups. Homogeneous groups used more high-quality helping behaviors and engaged more often in task-oriented behavior. Heterogeneous groups engaged more often in low-quality helping behaviors. Working with native students may have been conducive to non-native students’ understanding of word problems in realistic mathematics education

    The role of deviant siblings in delinquency: a meta-analysis of longitudinal studies

    Deviant siblings have been considered as role models for future delinquent behavior; however, previous studies have led to inconsistent results in this regard. The goal of the current meta-analysis was to analyze the effect of deviant non-twin siblings on future delinquency. The potential moderation effects of birth order, sex dyad, age of siblings, publication year, study length, and sample size were analyzed. Six databases were searched for studies: PsycInfo, MEDLINE, Criminal Justice Abstracts, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar. To analyze the prospective interdependence of delinquent siblings, only longitudinal studies were considered for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Two authors independently went through all the retrieved studies and coded those eligible for inclusion, with good interrater agreement. A total of 18 studies were included, which provided 24 independent effect sizes. The meta-analysis showed a significant prospective association between deviant siblings and delinquency. A moderate effect size was found from older sibling to younger sibling and vice versa, as well as between siblings when birth order was not specified. Likewise, significant associations were found in brother pairs, sister pairs, and mixed-sex sibling pairs. No moderation effects were found for age of siblings, publication year, study length, or sample size. The results highlight the role of siblings as a risk factor for future delinquencyS

    Haematology and clinical chemistry values for harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) fed environmentally contaminated herring remain within normal ranges

    Abstract: Twenty-two young harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) were fed herring from either the relatively unpolluted Atlantic Ocean or the heavily polluted Baltic Sea as part of a 2œ-year immunotoxicological study. Blood samples taken at regular intervals were analyzed for routine haematology and clinical chemistry. Minimal differences between the two groups were observed in these parameters over the course of the experiment. Of the 20 clinical chemistry parameters analyzed, slight differences were found in serum levels of urea, creatinine, magnesium, and cholesterol. In haematology profiles, red blood cell counts and haematocrit values were higher in seals fed Baltic herring, but these differences diminished over time. Neutrophil counts were also higher in this group of seals, especially during the second half of the feeding study. Factors affecting haematological and clinical chemistry parameters within feeding groups included gender, age, and season. The data collected demonstrate a relative insensitivity of clinical chemistry parameters to the effects of chronic exposure to environmental contaminants accumulated through the food chain, but suggest the induction of clear alterations in differential white blood cel

    The Impact of Lower Extremity Skeletal Muscle Atrophy and Myosteatosis on Revascularization Outcomes in Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease

    Background: This study investigated whether lower extremity muscle atrophy and myosteatosis in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are correlated to postoperative outcomes, such as reintervention or amputation-free survival. Methods: In this single-center retrospective cohort study of 462 patients treated for peripheral arterial disease scheduled for intervention, muscle mass and the presence of fattening of the lower extremity muscles were measured semiautomatically in a single computed tomography slice of the treated leg. Binary logistic regression models and Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the effect of muscle atrophy and myosteatosis on reintervention and amputation. Results: Muscle atrophy and myosteatosis increased in PAD patients with Fontaine class IV compared with Fontaine class IIa. In PAD patients with muscle atrophy or myosteatosis, no association was found with the reintervention rate or reintervention-free survival, but an association was found with amputation-free survival, even after adjustment for patient-related, disease-severity, and comorbidities-related factors. Conclusion: Muscle atrophy and mysosteatosis increased in PAD patients with increasing disease severity. Lower extremity muscle atrophy and myosteatosis are associated with amputation rate and amputation-free survival in PAD patients. No association with reintervention rate or reintervention-free survival was found. Muscle atrophy and myosteatosis may serve as additional risk factors in decision making in the often frail vascular patient

    Validation of a Length-Adjusted Abdominal Arterial Calcium Score Method for Contrast-Enhanced CT Scans

    BACKGROUND: The Agatston score on noncontrast computed tomography (CT) scans is the gold standard for calcium load determination. However, contrast-enhanced CT is commonly used for patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs), such as peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Currently, there is no validated method to determine calcium load in the aorta and peripheral arteries with a contrast-enhanced CT. This study validated a length-adjusted calcium score (LACS) method for contrast-enhanced CT scans.METHOD: The LACS (calcium volume in mm 3/arterial length in cm) in the abdominal aorta was calculated using four-phase liver CT scans of 30 patients treated between 2017 and 2021 at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) with no aortic disease. Noncontrast CT scans were segmented with a 130 Hounsfield units (HU) threshold, and a patient-specific threshold was used for contrast-enhanced CTs. The LACS was calculated and compared from both segmentations. Secondly, the interobserver variability and the influence of slice thickness (0.75 mm vs. 2.0 mm) was determined. RESULTS: There was a high correlation between the LACS from contrast-enhanced CT scans and the LACS of noncontrast CTs ( R 2 = 0.98). A correction factor of 1.9 was established to convert the LACS derived from contrast-enhanced CT to noncontrast CT scans. LACS interobserver agreement on contrast-enhanced CT was excellent (1.0, 95% confidence interval = 1.0-1.0). The 0.75 mm CT threshold was 541 (459-625) HU compared with 500 (419-568) HU on 2 mm CTs ( p = 0.15). LACS calculated with both thresholds was not significantly different ( p = 0.63). CONCLUSION: The LACS seems to be a robust method for scoring calcium load on contrast-enhanced CT scans in arterial segments with various lengths.</p
