    Biostimulation of Immobilized Microbes in a Fixed-Bed Bioreactor towards Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Water Remediation Using Compost Tea and Egg Shell Powder

    The need to satisfy the ever increasing petroleum demand coupled with the availability of enough crude oil reserves to meet demand for several decades to come makes petroleum contamination a globally important subject. Bioremediation has emerged as an efficient treatment option for the remediation of organic contaminants including petroleum owing to the failure of physico-chemical treatment options to address petroleum contamination. The current study targeted the application of compost tea (CT) and egg shell powder (ESP) solution at various levels as nutrient amendments/bio-stimulants for hydrocarbon-eating microbes attached to support media surfaces in a fixed-bed bioreactor system. CT and ESP were characterized to be rich in essential nutrients including N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na and C. CT and ESP application at four levels each recorded appreciable boosts in microbial numbers and TPH removal across applied levels. CT application recorded 23.49±2.20 to 29.36±0.79 % boost in TPH removal and 17.03±3.01 to 61.07±2.26 % boost in microbial mass. Boosts in TPH removal assumed the order 3200 ml 1600 ml 800 ml 400 ml. ESP application similarly recorded 27.56±2.62 to 29.57±0.90 % boost in TPH removal and 17.50±1.60 to 24.43±2.05 % boost in microbial mass.     A time series analysis of fossil fuel consumption in Sub-Saharan Africa: evidence from Ghana, Kenya and South Africa

    This study investigated the determinants of the rising fossil fuel consumption for three Sub-Saharan African countries - Ghana, Kenya and South Africa - to help manage the rising consumption fossil fuel consumption. The study employed the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square and Canonical co-integration regression techniques using data from 1975-2013. Among other results, the study revealed that income and urbanization increased fossil fuel consumption for all the countries. Also, while trade reduced fossil fuel consumption for Kenya and South Africa, the opposite was found for Ghana while the efficiency of the service sector reduced fossil fuel consumption for all the countries. The results of the study suggest efforts should be geared towards strengthening the energy efficiency system in each of these countries to help reduce fossil fuel consumption.     Fermentation Capacity of Yeasts Using Mango (Mangifera indica Linn.) as Substrate

    The goal of this study was to address the problem of large post harvest losses of mangoes by employing yeast fermentation technology to produce a more stable, value-added product in this case fruit wine. The design of the study involved determination of the fermentative capabilities of four commercial yeast types on musts obtained from an improved (Keitt) mango cultivar that is popularly cultivated in some parts of Ghana for export. The characteristics of the mango musts that were monitored included total soluble solids (TSS), pH and total acidity (TA), microbial populations (aerophilic mesophiles, yeasts and Acetic acid Bacteria), alcohol content and colour over the course of the fermentations. Descriptive and hedonic sensory evaluation was carried out on the ferments obtained from all treatments. Results showed that two of the yeast types namely; Red Star Pasteur and Red Star Montrachet displayed superior fermentation characteristics and produced mango wines that were acceptable by both descriptive and affective sensory panels.     The Prevalence and Risk Factors of Hepatitis B Virus Infection Among Dwellers in A Peri-Urban District of Ghana: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a significant health issue affecting about 296 million people worldwide. The disease is of great public health concern in Ghana as the country is within the endemic region of HBV infection. This study sought to determine the prevalence of HBV infection and associated risk factors among dwellers in a peri-urban district of Ghana. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the Sunyani West District of the Bono Region of Ghana. Respondents aged ≥18 years were purposively recruited from the four major towns in the District with health centres. A questionnaire was used to collect data from participants, and a rapid diagnostic test for the sero-presence or otherwise of hepatitis B infection was conducted. A total of 992 respondents took part in the study, with the prevalence of HBV infection using HBsAg as a marker among all the study participants being 2.9% (male 4.0% (12/298), female 2.5% (17/694)). Females aged between 20-29 years had a comparatively higher prevalence of hepatitis B infection than their corresponding males. The intake of alcohol (RR=4.23; 95% CI:2.05-8.74, p <0.000), previously diagnosed of having a sexually transmitted disease (RR= 2.43; 95% CI: 1.03-5.71, p = .04) and having multiple sexual partners (RR= 2.27; 95% CI: 1.11-4.65, p = .02) were the significant risk factors for HBV infection among the study participants. The study showed a low prevalence of HBV infection in the Sunyani West District of Ghana using HBsAg as a serum marker to diagnose the infection.     A Preliminary Assessment of Consumer\u27s Exposure to Organochlorine Pesticides in Fruits and Vegetables and the Potential Health Risk in Accra Metropolis, Ghana

    Accra Metropolis is the major recipient of agricultural produce in Ghana, with almost the entire population depending on rural agricultural activities for subsistence. To increase agricultural produce, various forms of pesticides are normally used in fruits and vegetable farming. The consequence is that several cases of pesticide poisoning have been observed. In this preliminary study, a field survey was carried out to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and peoples\u27 perception concerning the use of pesticides by farmers in fruit production. The residual concentrations of selected pesticides in pawpaw, imported apples and tomato samples and the potential health risks associated with the exposure to these pesticides were also assessed. The field survey data indicated that more than 70% of the participants reported one or more poisoning upon fruits consumption resulting in pesticide-related illnesses. Pesticide residues in the various environmental samples were determined by gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). The results showed that, the levels of pesticide residues varied from \u3c0.01 μg/g to as high as 0.11 μg/g depending on the pesticide monitored. The analysis of health risk estimates revealed heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, endrin aldehyde, and endrin ketone levels exceeded the reference dose, suggesting a great potential for systemic toxicity in children considered the most vulnerable population subgroup. Lastly, the public is in the know of pesticide residues in fruits and calls for the curtailing of pesticide use on fruits and vegetable production via educational programmes for farmers on control and safer use of pesticides

    An innovation platform for institutional change in Ghana's cocoa sector

    Cocoa is a major source of employment, smallholder farmers' incomes, and export revenue in Ghana. However, by 2010 institutional constraints throughout the value chain were failing to sustain bean quality and cocoa production. A national-level innovation platform, comprising key public and private actors in the cocoa sector, was established in 2010 to analyse and act to address this concern. The members' initial inquiries revealed that: farmers indirectly were paying for the national mass spraying and Hi-Tech input programmes, both provided free at the point of delivery. As the largest components in the cost structure, these programmes to a large extent accounted for the low price paid to farmers for their beans; a volatile exchange rate regime meant that often the prevailing rate was not equal to its equilibrium level; policies that heavily taxed cocoa were destroying farmers' expectation of long-term profitability. This paper draws on data recorded from the beginning 2009 to end 2013 by means of theory-guided process tracing 5(TGPT), to show how the platform contributed to increased prices for farmers, to subsequent reform of the input supply arrangements, and to changes to the mass spraying programme. The key causal mechanisms identified are policy learning and progressive amendment of existing institutions. The paper concludes by drawing lessons for the role of an innovation platform.</p
