    Improving Male Middle School Nursing Recruitment: A Comprehensive Approach for Students, Families, and Counselors

    Middle school students have been identified as the prime age group to begin nursing recruitment efforts (Matutina, Newman & Jenkins, 2010); however, the current practice of recruiting middle school, male students is ineffective in increasing the number of new nurses. Efforts are required to encourage young, male students to consider nursing as a potential career choice, but this can’t be accomplished without influencing their decision, by sharing the value of the profession. The purpose of this project was to develop and present a PowerPoint presentation to influence middle school, male students to improve their perceptions of nursing as a career option. A comprehensive recruitment toolkit, composed of the PowerPoint and a link to a recruitment video, was developed for students, families, and counselors. To help inform the video that was developed in 2009, a survey of Deans and Directors from nursing schools across California, helped to determine the value of the recruitment video on influencing young men. Critical to the video evaluation was analyzing the video’s comments, which were shared openly on YouTube. The impact that YouTube has on education and training in the classroom was explored, as well as examining two theoretical frameworks that help explain behavioral change and career maturity. A total of 193 students, of which 85 were male (44%), attended a 30-minute presentation at two middle schools, during four sessions. Overall, implementation of this quality improvement project resulted in favorable reception from both students and teachers. Post presentation surveys demonstrated 17.6 % (n = 14) of the male students would reconsider nursing as a career option, while 34.2% (n = 25) expressed interest in learning more about the profession. These results suggest that increasing awareness of male middle school students regarding nursing may influence their decision to consider nursing as a career choice

    A Miniaturized Cassegrainian Concentrator Solar Array for High Power Space Applications.

    A miniaturized Cassegrainian concentrator (MCC) solar array system concept is under preliminary development for the space station or for other large spacecraft/space platform mission applications that may require power at the 100 kilowatt level or higher. The concept has many of the physical attributes of planar rigid-panel solar arrays and does not require unusual deployment or thermal management methods or auxiliaries. Furthermore, it promises both lower initial cost and lower life cycle cost than state-of-the-art lightweight planar flexible blanket solar arrays. The paper briefly describes the MCC concept and presents the results of a life cycle cost comparison analysis that shows that solar array area (rather than weight) is the key cost parameter at the lowest candidate space station basing altitudes. With smaller area than its planar array counterpart, the MCC array offers a 20 to 30 percent reduction in life cycle cost

    Distortion and regulation characterization of a Mapham inverter

    Output voltage Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of a 20kHz, 6kVA Mapham resonant inverter is characterized as a function of its switching-to-resonant frequency ratio, f sub s/f sub r, using the EASY5 engineering analysis system. EASY5 circuit simulation results are compared with hardware test results to verify the accuracy of the simulations. The effects of load on the THD versus f sub s/f sub r ratio is investigated for resistive, leading, and lagging power factor load impedances. The effect of the series output capacitor on the Mapham inverter output voltage distortion and inherent load regulation is characterized under loads of various power factors and magnitudes. An optimum series capacitor value which improves the inherent load regulation to better than 3 percent is identified. The optimum series capacitor value is different than the value predicted from a modeled frequency domain analysis. An explanation is proposed which takes into account the conduction overlap in the inductor pairs during steady-state inverter operation, which decreases the effective inductance of a Mapham inverter. A fault protection and current limit method is discussed which allows the Mapham inverter to operate into a short circuit, even when the inverter resonant circuit becomes overdamped

    Computers and Productivity : Evidence from Laptop Use in the College Classroom

    This paper evaluates the effect of classroom computer use on academic performance. Using a quasi-experimental design and administrative data, we find that computer use in college classrooms has a negative impact on course grades. Our study exploits institutional policies that generate plausibly random variation in laptop use within the classroom. Compared to students who are not affected by computer policies, students who are induced to use computers in class perform significantly worse and students who are influenced not to use computers perform significantly better. We find that the negative effects of computer use are concentrated among males and low-performing students and more prominent in quantitative courses

    Zee electrical interconnect

    An interconnect, having some length, that reliably connects two conductors separated by the length of the interconnect when the connection is made but in which one length if unstressed would change relative to the other in operation. The interconnect comprises a base element an intermediate element and a top element. Each element is rectangular and formed of a conducting material and has opposed ends. The elements are arranged in a generally Z-shape with the base element having one end adapted to be connected to one conductor. The top element has one end adapted to be connected to another conductor and the intermediate element has its ends disposed against the other end of the base and the top element. Brazes mechanically and electrically interconnect the intermediate element to the base and the top elements proximate the corresponding ends of the elements. When the respective ends of the base and the top elements are connected to the conductors, an electrical connection is formed therebetween, and when the conductors are relatively moved or the interconnect elements change length the elements accommodate the changes and the associated compression and tension forces in such a way that the interconnect does not mechanically fatigue

    Oral application of freeze-dried yeast particles expressing the PCV2b Cap protein on their surface induce protection to subsequent PCV2b challenge in vivo

    Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is now endemic in every major pig producing country, causing PCV-associated disease (PCVAD), linked with large scale economic losses. Current vaccination strategies are based on the capsid protein of the virus and are reasonably successful in preventing PCVAD but fail to induce sterile immunity. Additionally, vaccinating whole herds is expensive and time consuming. In the present study a “proof of concept” vaccine trial was employed to test the effectiveness of powdered freeze-dried recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast stably expressing the capsid protein of PCV2b on its surface as an orally applied vaccine. PCV2-free pigs were given 3 doses of vaccine or left un-vaccinated before challenge with a defined PCV2b strain. Rectal temperatures were measured and serum and faeces samples were collected weekly. At the end of the study, pigs were euthanized, tissue samples taken and tested for PCV2b load by qPCR and immunohistochemistry. The peak of viraemia in sera and faeces of unvaccinated pigs was higher than that of vaccinated pigs. Additionally more sIgA was found in faeces of vaccinated pigs than unvaccinated. Vaccination was associated with lower serum concentrations of TNFα and IL-1β but higher concentrations of IFNα and IFNγ in comparison to the unvaccinated animals. At the end of the trial, a higher viral load was found in several lymphatic tissues and the ileum of unvaccinated pigs in comparison to vaccinated pigs. The difference between groups was especially apparent in the ileum. The results presented here demonstrate a possible use for recombinant S. cerevisiae expressing viral proteins as an oral vaccine against PCV2. A powdered freeze-dried recombinant S. cerevisiae used as an oral vaccine could be mixed with feed and may offer a cheap and less labour intensive alternative to inoculation with the additional advantage that no cooling chain would be required for vaccine transport and storage

    Recombinant Incretin-Secreting Microbe Improves Metabolic Dysfunction in High-Fat Diet Fed Rodents

    peer-reviewedThe gut hormone glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and its analogues represent a new generation of anti-diabetic drugs, which have also demonstrated propensity to modulate host lipid metabolism. Despite this, drugs of this nature are currently limited to intramuscular administration routes due to intestinal degradation. The aim of this study was to design a recombinant microbial delivery vector for a GLP-1 analogue and assess the efficacy of the therapeutic in improving host glucose, lipid and cholesterol metabolism in diet induced obese rodents. Diet-induced obese animals received either Lactobacillus paracasei NFBC 338 transformed to express a long-acting analogue of GLP-1 or the isogenic control microbe which solely harbored the pNZ44 plasmid. Short-term GLP-1 microbe intervention in rats reduced serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and triglyceride-rich lipoprotein cholesterol substantially. Conversely, extended GLP-1 microbe intervention improved glucose-dependent insulin secretion, glucose metabolism and cholesterol metabolism, compared to the high-fat control group. Interestingly, the microbe significantly attenuated the adiposity associated with the model and altered the serum lipidome, independently of GLP-1 secretion. These data indicate that recombinant incretin-secreting microbes may offer a novel and safe means of managing cholesterol metabolism and diet induced dyslipidaemia, as well as insulin sensitivity in metabolic dysfunction
