    Privacy and Security Concerns Associated with Mobile Money Applications in Africa

    The rapid adoption of mobile money use in Africa raises concerns regarding the privacy and security of users, particularly in light of Financial Action Task Force recommendations requiring user transparency and the collection of transaction data. The transparency required of the now-financially-included—particularly in nations with weak adherence to the rule of law and limited privacy protections—leaves users vulnerable to abuse. Further, the increasing complexity of mobile phone use that is indicative of mobile money applications raises concerns regarding Africa’s preparedness for heightened security threats that come hand in hand with increased use. To address these problems, the authors of this Article recommend specific policy actions by African nations to improve consumer privacy and cybersecurity, supported by policies of industrialized nations like the United States and responsible corporate behavior

    S100A1: A Regulator of Striated Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+ Handling, Sarcomeric, and Mitochondrial Function

    Calcium (Ca2+) signaling plays a key role in a wide range of physiological functions including control of cardiac and skeletal muscle performance. To assure a precise coordination of both temporally and spatially transduction of intracellular Ca2+ oscillations to downstream signaling networks and target operations, Ca2+ cycling regulation in muscle tissue is conducted by a plethora of diverse molecules. Ca2+ S100A1 is a member of the Ca2+-binding S100 protein family and represents the most abundant S100 isoform in cardiac and skeletal muscle. Early studies revealed distinct expression patterns of S100A1 in healthy and diseased cardiac tissue from animal models and humans. Further elaborate investigations uncovered S100A1 protein as a basic requirement for striated muscle Ca2+ handling integrity. S100A1 is a critical regulator of cardiomyocyte Ca2+ cycling and contractile performance. S100A1-mediated inotropy unfolds independent and on top of βAR-stimulated contractility with unchanged βAR downstream signaling. S100A1 has further been detected at different sites within the cardiac sarcomere indicating potential roles in myofilament function. More recently, a study reported a mitochondrial location of S100A1 in cardiomyocytes. Additionally, normalizing the level of S100A1 protein by means of viral cardiac gene transfer in animal heart failure models resulted in a disrupted progression towards cardiac failure and enhanced survival. This brief review is confined to the physiological and pathophysiological relevance of S100A1 in cardiac and skeletal muscle Ca2+ handling with a particular focus on its potential as a molecular target for future therapeutic interventions

    Design optimization of a high-power transformer for three-phase dual active bridge DC-DC converter for MVDC grids

    High-power DC-DC converter will be one of the essential technologies for the future DC grids. Especially, a three-phase dual-active bridge DC-DC (3DAB) Converter is highly suitable for high-power DC systems. Key component within this converter is the high power transformer operated at a medium frequency (MF) range. The design and optimization of this key component is presented in this paper. The transformer provides galvanic isolation from low voltage level to medium level or high voltage level and provides stepping up or down of the output (secondary) voltage. At first, a design of three-phase medium frequency transformer is developed. The designed transformer is then validated using two-dimensional (2D) transient finite element analysis (FEA) and performance under the non-sinusoidal excitation is determined. After that, the optimization is carried out, for the set of selected design variables, in order to enhance the power density and efficiency of the targeted transformer. Finally, the performance of the full system, 3DAB converter, is determined using the parameters of optimized transformer. Also, two different rated input voltages for 4MW/1kHz three-phase transformer are considered and analysed in this paper

    Impacts of 2020 Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in London on Road Traffic Injuries

    We assessed the impacts of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) implemented in 2020 on road traffic injuries. We used police data from October-December 2018/2019 (pre) compared with the same period in 2020 (post). We found absolute numbers of injuries inside LTNs halved relative to the rest of London (ratio 0.51, p<0.001). Considering changes in background travel patterns, our results indicate substantial reductions in pedestrian injury risk. Risks to other road users may also have fallen, but by a more modest amount. We found no evidence of changes in injury numbers or risk on LTN boundary roads

    Getting antimalarials on target: impact of national roll-out of malaria rapid diagnostic tests on health facility treatment in three regions of Tanzania.

    OBJECTIVES: Parasitological confirmation of malaria prior to treatment is recommended for patients of all ages, with malaria rapid diagnostic tests (mRDTs) an important tool to target artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) to patients with malaria. To evaluate the impact on case management practices of routine government implementation of mRDTs, we conducted large-scale health facility surveys in three regions of Tanzania before and after mRDT roll-out. METHODS: Febrile patients at randomly selected health facilities were interviewed about care received at the facility, and blood samples were collected for reference blood smears. Health facility staff were interviewed about their qualifications and availability of malaria diagnostics and drugs. RESULTS: The percentage of febrile patients tested for malaria at the facility increased from 15.8% in 2010 to 54.9% in 2012. ACTs were obtained by 65.8% of patients positive by reference blood smear in 2010 and by 50.2% in 2012 (P = 0.0675); no antimalarial was obtained by 57.8% of malaria-negative patients in 2010 and by 82.3% in 2012 (P < 0.0001). Overall, ACT use decreased (39.9-21.3%, P < 0.0001) and antibiotic use increased (31.2-48.5%, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Roll-out of mRDTs in Tanzania dramatically improved diagnostic testing for malaria and reduced overuse of ACTs for patients without parasitemia. However, post-roll-out almost 50% of febrile patients did not receive a diagnostic test, and almost 50% of patients testing positive did not receive ACTs. Stock-outs of ACTs and mRDTs were important problems. Further investigation is needed to determine reasons for not providing ACTs to patients with malaria and potential for inappropriate antibiotic use
