    Causality between Energy Consumption and Economic Growth in Pakistan

    The objective of this study is to examine the causality between energy consumption and economic growth in Pakistan over the period of 1991 to 2006. Pakistan has been facing severe energy crises in the current period and the condition is deteriorating day by day. By applying technique of Granger causality and unit root test, the results infer that electric power consumption is granger causing GDP growth. The implications of the study are that energy conservation policy regarding consumption of energy would not lead to any side-effects on economic growth in Pakistan. The country needs a quantum jump in electricity generation in medium-term scenario to revert the possibilities of load shedding in future due to shrinking gap between demand and supply of electricity.     International center for monitoring cloud computing providers (ICMCCP) for ensuring trusted clouds

    Cloud computing offers flexible and scalable IT (Information Technology) services for which many organizations are now interested in harnessing its benefit. In spite of the enthusiasm and great interest, Cloud computing has not yet earned full trust of the individual customers, banks, armed forces, governments, and companies who do sensitive computing tasks. While it is not the goal to persuade everyone to use the technology and some types of tasks are to be done with secrecy, for the general works done by the companies and customers, Cloud could be heavily used. However, it is very difficult to convince people that the Cloud Providers (CPs) would keep their data protected. To address this issue, what required is to employ some mechanism that can establish the trust of the users. With this motivation, in this paper, we present a novel concept for trust assurance in Cloud services with the proposal of implementing a Global Central Bank-like regulatory authority. Our initiative is termed International Center for Monitoring Cloud Computing Providers (ICMCCP). Various facets of ICMCCP model have been described alongside the policy making issues.     Detecting Zero-day Polymorphic Worms with Jaccard Similarity Algorithm

    Zero-day polymorphic worms pose a serious threat to the security of Mobile systems and Internet infrastructure. In many cases, it is difficult to detect worm attacks at an early stage. There is typically little or no time to develop a well-constructed solution during such a worm outbreak. This is because the worms act only to spread from node to node and they bring security concerns to everyone using Internet via any static or mobile node. No system is safe from an aggressive worm crisis. However, many of the characteristics of a worm can be used to defeat it, including its predictable behavior and shared signatures. In this paper, we propose an efficient signature generation method based on string similarity algorithms to generate signatures for Zero-day polymorphic worms. Then, these signatures are practically applied to an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to prevent the network from such attacks. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed approach compared to other existing mechanisms

    Human C1q Induces Apoptosis in an Ovarian Cancer Cell Line via Tumor Necrosis Factor

Human C1q is the first recognition subcomponent of the complement classical pathway that plays a vital role in the clearance of immune complexes, pathogens and apoptotic cells. C1q also has a homeostatic role involving immune and non-immune cells; these functions not necessarily involve complement activation. Recently, C1q has been shown to be expressed locally in the microenvironment of a range of human malignant tumours, where it can promote cancer cell adhesion, migration and proliferation, without involving complement activation. C1q has been shown to be present in the ascitic fluid formed during ovarian cancers. In this study, we have examined the effects of human C1q and its globular domain on an ovarian cancer cell line, SKOV3. We show that C1q and the recombinant globular modules induce apoptosis in SKOV3 cells in a dose-and time-dependent manner. C1q expression was not detectable in the SKOV3 cells. Exogenous treatment with C1q and globular heads at the concentration of 10μg/ml induced apoptosis in approximately 55% cells, as revealed by immunofluorescence microscopy and FACS. The qPCR and caspase analysis suggested that C1q and globular head modules activated TNF-α and upregulation of Fas. The genes of mTOR, RICTOR and RAPTOR survival pathways, which are often over-expressed in majority of the cancers, were significantly downregulated within few hours of the treatment of C1q and globular head modules. In conclusion, C1q, via its globular domain, induced apoptosis in an ovarian cancer cell line, SKOV3 via TNF-α induced apoptosis pathway involving upregulation of Bax and Fas. This study highlights a potentially protective role of C1q in certain cancers

    An experimental evaluation of a loop versus a reference design for two-channel microarrays

    Motivation: Despite theoretical arguments that socalled "loop designs" of two-channel DNA microarray experiments are more efficient, biologists keep on using "reference designs". We describe two sets of microarray experiments with RNA from two different biological systems (TPA-stimulated mammalian cells and Streptomyces coelicor). In each case, both a loop and a reference design were performed using the same RNA preparations with the aim to study their relative efficiency. Results: The results of these experiments show that (1) the loop design attains a much higher precision than the reference design, (2) multiplicative spot effects are a large source of variability, and if they are not accounted for in the mathematical model, for example by taking log-ratios or including spot-effects, then the model will perform poorly. The first result is reinforced by a simulation study. Practical recommendations are given on how simple loop designs can be extended to more realistic experimental designs and how standard statistical methods allow the experimentalist to use and interpret the results from loop designs in practice
