    Get PDF
Between March and July 1996, a focalized epidemic outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in General Vedia, province of Chaco, associated to the gallery forest of the Oro river was verified. The incidence rate in the area, which was 0-2/000 cases in preceding years, reached 8/000 cases in 1996. The risk of symptomatic infection was similar between sexes, but was different when analizing the different age groups by sex, suggesting a greater relative importance of the peridomestic transmission for the females and of the transmission in the subtropical forest for the males. Specimens of Lutzomyia intermedia, a species already incriminated as a vector of Leishmaniasis in other provinces of northern Argentina, were captured and identified in the focus locality in May 1996. The possible causes of the outbreak related to the climatic variables and the vector abundance are analyzed and the results in the framework of possible preventive and control activities are discussed.

    Get PDF
Diaphyseal tibial fractures represent 15% of long bone fractures in children. Their treatment should be individualized according to patient and fracture characteristics, although the treatment of choice is closed reduction and plaster immobilization. In the case of unstable fractures, other types of treatment may be required. At present, flexible intramedullary nailing is acquiring popularity. However, there is a simple, effective and minimally invasive method of treatment, although it has fallen into disuse, at present it can still have its instructions. This is the bipolar fixed traction system. This study presents the results obtained in 30 children with unstable diaphyseal tibial fractures treated with this method

Sugar composition and sugar-related parameters of honeys from the northern Iberian Plateau

    Get PDF
This research was aimed to study the sugar composition of fifty-four representative artisanal honeys from the northern Iberian plateau. Moisture, specific rotation, and crystallization indexes were also determined. Sugars were analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) after Pourtallier´s derivatization procedure. Fourteen carbohydrates were reliably quantified: two monosaccharides, five disaccharides, six trisaccharides and one tetrasaccharide. Honeydew honeys showed the highest disaccharides (6.71%) and trisaccharides (1.81%) averages and the lowest monosaccharides (63.10%) average, in contrast to heather honeys that had the lowest disaccharides (4.93%) and trisaccharides (0.69%) averages and the highest monosaccharides (70.96%). Chestnut honeys possessed low concentrations of monosaccharides, sucrose, trehalose, and trisaccharides. Clover and lavender honeys possessed high monosaccharide and disaccharide percentages. As expected, lavender samples showed the highest sucrose concentrations (0.05–5.18%). Isomaltose contents were particularly high in honeydew (1.17–2.49%) and chestnut (1.34–1.74%) samples, and low in lavender (0.6–1.16%) honeys, the latter also being low in raffinose (0.01‒0.05%). Moisture percentages (14.4–18.6%) indicated optimum honey ripeness. Averages for all groups of samples were levorotatory. In contrast to honeydew and chestnut honeys, lavender samples showed the fastest granulation tendency. In the analyzed honeys, the higher the percentage of isomaltose was, the lower the crystallization tendency the honeys exhibited.Junta de Castilla y León” (Spain) for supporting this research under the project BU007A0

Evolution des exploitations ovines et caprines en Méditerranée durant les dix dernières années. I. Proposition d'une méthodologie d'étude

    Get PDF
I. Proposal of a study methodology”. The main objective of this paper is to develop a methodology that could be used in diverse regions to make a comparative analysis of situation and changes that may occur in goat and sheep sectors among different regions from the same or different countries. This process has been elaborated for breeders on one hand, for extension and commercial agents on the other. Statistical analysis of variance is used to build up a typology of farms on the basis of the actual situation and changes in farms for the 10 last years. The method of clinical analysis of variance of ecosystems is used to: (i) determine system strengths and weaknesses and the cause-result relationships; (ii) foresee system evolution based on the established cluster; and (iii) propose actions to optimize future evolution in every system according to real possibilities in each particular case. This initiative is an action of the Monitoring Body of sheep and goat production systems of the FAO/CIHEAM network of cooperative research on sheep and goats

Effect of ozone therapy upon clinical and bacteriological parameters of the oral cavity: an update

    Get PDF
Objective: To review the literature on ozone therapy in oral health, as assessed by different clinical and bacteriological parameters. Material and methods: A PubMed literature search was made using the key words “ozone dental”, and establishing as limits “randomized controlled trial” and “dental journal”. Thirteen articles were identified, with access to only 6 of them. Results: Four studies used ozone for the treatment of caries. One study examined its effect upon dental hypersensitivity, while another evaluated the efficacy of ozone as a tooth whitening technique. Five studies explored the bacteriological actions of ozone therapy in reference to different types of bacteria. Conclusion: The reviewed literature yields a number of studies describing a high antimicrobial potential of ozone therapy in different dental areas, though very few in vivo studies have evidenced the success of such treatment. Further studies are therefore needed in this field

Phlebotominae (Diptera: psycodidae) fauna in the Chaco region and Cutaneous Leishmaniasis transmission patterns in Argentina

    Get PDF
In Argentina, the incidence of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) has shown a steady increase over the last few decades. In the Chaco biogeographical region, specifically, several outbreaks of ACL were recently reported in addition to the usual time-space scattering of ACL cases. However, little is known about the sandfly composition in the eastern, humid Chaco (HC) region or the western, dry Chaco (DC) region. Therefore, phlebotomine captures were performed throughout this region and an analysis of the distribution of reported ACL cases was conducted in order to assess the vector diversity in ACL endemic and epidemic scenarios in the Chaco region. The results support the hypothesis of two distinct patterns: (1) the DC, where Lutzomyia migonei was the most prevalent species, had isolated ACL cases and a zoonotic cycle; (2) the HC, where Lutzomyia neivai was the most prevalent species, had an increase in ACL incidence and outbreaks and an anthropozoonotic cycle. The epidemic risk in the Chaco region may be associated with the current climate trends, landscape modification, connection with other ACL foci, and Lu. neivai predominance and abundance. Therefore, changes in sandfly population diversity and density in the Chaco region are an indicator of emergent epidemic risk in sentinel capture sites.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Intrathecal cell therapy with autologous stromal cells increases cerebral glucose metabolism and can offer a new approach to the treatment of Alzheimer's type dementia

After recent observations that intrathecal administration of autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) increases cerebral metabolism in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), we examined this type of cell therapy in Alzheimer's type dementia. Three patients with clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease received every 3 months 100million autologous MSCs by intrathecal route, until a total dose of 300million. During cell therapy the patients showed arrest in neurological deterioration and two of them manifested clear improvement of previous symptoms. A global increase in cerebral glucose metabolism, measured using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET), was observed after every administration of cell therapy. Our present findings suggest that intrathecal administrations of autologous MSCs can be a new strategy for the treatment of Alzheimer's dementiaWe thank the institutions supporting the development of our cell therapy program, in particular Mapfre and Rafael del Pino Foundation

Prognostic Value of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring in Refractory Hypertension : A Prospective Study

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to establish whether ambulatory blood pressure offers a better estimate of cardiovascular risk than does its clinical blood pressure counterpart in refractory hypertension. This prospective study assessed the incidence of cardiovascular events over time during an average follow-up of 49 months (range, 6 to 96). Patients were referred to specialized hypertension clinics (86 essential hypertension patients who had diastolic blood pressure >100 mm Hg during antihypertensive treatment that included three or more antihypertensive drugs, one being a diuretic). Twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was performed at the time of entrance. End-organ damage was monitored yearly, and the incidence of cardiovascular events was recorded. Patients were divided into tertiles of average diastolic blood pressure during activity according to the ABPM, with the lowest tertile 97 mm Hg (HT, n=28). While significant differences in systolic and diastolic ambulatory blood pressures were observed among groups, no differences were observed at either the beginning or at the time of the last evaluation for office blood pressure. During the last evaluation, a progression in the end-organ damage score was observed for the HT group but not for the two other groups. Twenty-one of the patients had a new cardiovascular event; the incidence of events was significantly lower for the LT group (2.2 per 100 patient-years) than it was for the MT group (9.5 per 100 patient-years) or for the HT group (13.6 per 100 patient-years). The probability of event-free survival was also significantly different when comparing the LT group with the other two groups (LT versus MT log-rank, P<.04; LT versus HT log-rank, P<.006). The HT group was an independent risk factor for the incidence of cardiovascular events (relative risk, 6.20; 95% confidence interval, 1.38 to 28.1, P<.02). Higher values of ambulatory blood pressure result in a worse prognosis in patients with refractory hypertension, supporting the recommendation that ABPM is useful in stratifying the cardiovascular risk in patients with refractory hypertension.Redon Mas, Josep, [email protected]
