EXPLORING BISEXUAL-IDENTIFIED PERSONS EXPERIENCES OF BELONGING

    Get PDF
Belonging is a basic and fundamental human need (Baumeister, & Leary, 1995) that is associated with psychosocial health (Cohen, 2004). Unfortunately, community belonging is a challenge for those with a bisexual identity. Binegativity, minority stress, and the invisibility of bisexual-identities may interfere with attempts to develop a sense of community belonging (Bradford, 2004). Little systematic research has examined bisexual-identified people’s perceptions and experiences of belonging to a community. This project addressed the question, “What are bisexual individuals’ experiences of community belonging/social exclusion?” Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample of 12 bisexual-identified persons. Interview transcripts were analyzed using a constructivist grounded theory methodology (Charmaz, 2006). Findings indicated that bisexual-identified persons encountered stigma and at times concealed their sexuality in order to create community belonging. However, risking authenticity, rather than concealing identity, seemed to help participants deal with stigma and develop more meaningful community belonging. Bisexual-identified persons who risk disclosing their identity and develop a sense of authenticity may increase their opportunities for community belonging. These findings are discussed in relation to their implications for counseling bisexual-identified persons and educating the communities in which they live

Exciton photon strong-coupling regime for a single quantum dot in a microcavity

    Get PDF
We report on the observation of the strong coupling regime between a single GaAs quantum dot and a microdisk optical mode. Photoluminescence is performed at various temperatures to tune the quantum dot exciton with respect to the optical mode. At resonance, we observe an anticrossing, signature of the strong coupling regime with a well resolved doublet. The Vacuum Rabi splitting amounts to 400 μeV and is twice as large as the individual linewidths.Comment: submitted on November 7th 200

Over the last few years, there has been a great advance in regenerative medicine, with various studies that have observed the ability to repair or regenerate dysfunctional tissues with the patient?s own cells, such as with mesenchymal cells. In this area

Inner Alpine conifer response to 20th century drought swings

Tree rings from the Alpine area have been widely used to reconstruct variations in summer temperature. In contrast, estimates of changes in the hydrological cycle are rather scarce. In order to detect altitudinal and species-specific patterns of growth responses to anomalous dry and wet conditions, a large network of 53 tree-ring width site chronologies along the Rhone valley (Valais, Switzerland) covering the 1751-2005 period was compiled and analyzed. A total of 1,605 measurement series from four conifer species—pine, larch, spruce, fir—were detrended to allow inter-annual to multi-decadal scale variability to be preserved. Site chronologies were combined to four altitudinal (colline: 1,450m asl) and species-specific mean time-series. These records were compared with temperature, precipitation, and drought (scPDSI) data. Among the altitudinal records, the colline chronologies showed highest correlation with June precipitation and scPDSI (0.5 and 0.7). Altitudinal effects, via control on climatic conditions, were superimposed upon species-specific characteristics in affecting tree growth and response to moisture variations. In particular, species-specific differences affected the significance level of drought response, with decreasing drought sensitivity towards higher elevations. Growth conditions were found to be optimal at ~1,300m asl, with precipitation/drought limiting tree growth below and temperature above. Common years of extreme drought and low growth for the colline sites occurred in 1921, 1944, 1976, 1992, and 1998. Our results demonstrate the potential of lower elevation conifers for reconstructing long-term changes in Alpine hydro-climat

Sports Field Localization using Memory Networks

Sports analytics derived automatically from broadcast footage is agrowing interest because it provides advantageous data to teamswithout the need for specialized equipment or trained staff. A fundamental step in automating sports video analytics extraction is registering the playing surface and transforming the broadcast footageto a top-down view. In this paper, a novel method is presentedthat performs automatic top-down registration of sports fields using temporal information. Using richer input data will increase the performance of the network and will not require an additional correctionnetwork

La ressemblance a encore frappé ! Effets de l'iconicité sur des tâches d'apprentissage en maintenance aéronautique

    Get PDF

BenderNet and RingerNet: Highly Efficient Line Segmentation Deep Neural Network Architectures for Ice Rink Localization

    Get PDF
A critical step for computer vision-driven hockey ice rink localization from broadcast video is the automatic segmentation of lines on the rink. While the leveraging of segmentation methods for sports field localization has been previously explored, the design of deep neural networks for segmenting ice rink lines has not been well studied. Furthermore, the exploration of efficient architecture designs is very important given the operational requirements of real-time sports analytics. Motivated by this, BenderNet and RingerNet, two highly efficient deep neural network architectures, have been designed specifically for ice rink line segmentation. Experiments on a dataset of annotated NHL broadcast video demonstrate high accuracy while maintaining high model efficiency, thus making the proposed methods well-suited for real-time ice hockey rink localization
