    (SC)RMI: A (S)emi-(C)lassical (R)elativistic (M)otion (I)integrator, to model the orbits of space probes around the Earth and other planets

    Today, the motion of spacecrafts is still described according to the classical Newtonian equations plus the so-called "relativistic corrections", computed with the required precision using the Post-(Post-)Newtonian formalism. The current approach, with the increase of tracking precision (Ka-Band Doppler, interplanetary lasers) and clock stabilities (atomic fountains) is reaching its limits in terms of complexity, and is furthermore error prone. In the appropriate framework of General Relativity, we study a method to numerically integrate the native relativistic equations of motion for a weak gravitational field, also taking into account small non-gravitational forces. The latter are treated as perturbations, in the sense that we assume that both the local structure of space-time is not modified by these forces, and that the unperturbed satellite motion follows the geodesics of the local space-time. The use of a symplectic integrator to compute the unperturbed geodesic motion insures the constancy of the norm of the proper velocity quadrivector.     Transforming Consumer Behavior: Introducing Self-Inquiry-Based and Self-Experience-Based Learning for Building Personal Competencies for Sustainable Consumption

    Despite growing educational efforts in various areas of society and albeit expanding knowledge on the background and consequences of consumption, little has changed about individual consumer behavior and its detrimental impact. Against this backdrop, some scholars called for a stronger focus on personal competencies, especially affective–motivational ones to foster more sustainable consumption. Such competencies, however, are rarely addressed within the context of education for sustainable consumption. Responding to this gap, we suggest two new learning formats that allow students to systematically acquire affective–motivational competencies: self-inquiry-based learning (SIBL) and self-experience-based learning (SEBL). We developed these approaches at Leuphana University Lüneburg, Germany, since 2016, and applied them within the framework of two seminars called Personal Approaches to Sustainable Consumption. Conducting scholarship of teaching and learning, we investigated the potential of SIBL and SEBL for cultivating personal competencies for sustainable development in general and sustainable consumption in particular. Our results indicate that SIBL and SEBL are promising approaches for this purpose

    Hippocampal sclerosis affects fMR-adaptation of lyrics and melodies in songs

    Songs constitute a natural combination of lyrics and melodies, but it is unclear whether and how these two song components are integrated during the emergence of a memory trace. Network theories of memory suggest a prominent role of the hippocampus, together with unimodal sensory areas, in the build-up of conjunctive representations. The present study tested the modulatory influence of the hippocampus on neural adaptation to songs in lateral temporal areas. Patients with unilateral hippocampal sclerosis and healthy matched controls were presented with blocks of short songs in which lyrics and/or melodies were varied or repeated in a crossed factorial design. Neural adaptation effects were taken as correlates of incidental emergent memory traces. We hypothesized that hippocampal lesions, particularly in the left hemisphere, would weaken adaptation effects, especially the integration of lyrics and melodies. Results revealed that lateral temporal lobe regions showed weaker adaptation to repeated lyrics as well as a reduced interaction of the adaptation effects for lyrics and melodies in patients with left hippocampal sclerosis. This suggests a deficient build-up of a sensory memory trace for lyrics and a reduced integration of lyrics with melodies, compared to healthy controls. Patients with right hippocampal sclerosis showed a similar profile of results although the effects did not reach significance in this population. We highlight the finding that the integrated representation of lyrics and melodies typically shown in healthy participants is likely tied to the integrity of the left medial temporal lobe. This novel finding provides the first neuroimaging evidence for the role of the hippocampus during repetitive exposure to lyrics and melodies and their integration into a song

    La notion d’incivilité regroupe un très large éventail de conduites : indifférence, impolitesse, dégradations, agressivité verbale. Les espaces publics de la Société nationale des Chemins de fer (SNCF) comme ceux de La Poste sont des lieux de brassage social, d’attente prolongée, de mélange entre besoins individuels et traitement de masse. La qualité de service y est intimement liée à la qualité du lien social. Les salariés de ces entreprises font remonter régulièrement le poids croissant des incivilités dont ils sont les témoins ou l’objet. Face à ces actes problématiques, la SNCF et La Poste ont engagé des travaux de recherche analysant les facteurs de dégradation et les leviers de régulation de la civilité dans leurs espaces.Incivility covers a wide range of behaviours – indifference, rudeness, insults, verbal aggression. The public spaces of the railways [SNCF] and the post office are places of social encounter, long waits, and a mix of mass treatment and individual needs. The quality of service is intimately linked to the quality of social ties. Employees in these companies must regularly overcome an increasing burden of incivilities of which they are the object or a witness. Faced with such problem behaviours, the railway companies and the postal service are engaged in research to analyse the factors that account for this degradation and the mechanisms for regulating civility in their public spaces

    2pWithin the framework of a global French program towards development of renewable energies, Martinique Island (Lesser Antilles, France) has been extensively investigated (from 2012 to 2013) through an integrated multi-disciplinary approach, with the aim to identify precisely the potential geothermal resources previously highlighted (Gadalia et al., 2014). Among the investigation methods deployed (geological, geochemical and hydrogeological), we carried out three magnetotelluric (MT) surveys above three of the four most promising areas of Martinique, namely the Anses d'Arlet, the Montagne Pelée and the Pitons du Carbet prospects. A total of about 100 MT stations were collected in the frequency range 1000 Hz to 10-2 Hz together with TEM soundings for potential static shift correction. 3-D MT inversions of the full tensor were run on each sector which took into account the coast effect. Assuming that the static shift observed is the result of near-surface lateral inhomogeneity causing electric field distortion, it can be accounted for by the inversion scheme used by Hautot et al. (2000, 2007) and no prior static correction was applied before inversion. The model results show that most of the soundings displaying static shift effect are accurately reproduced by near-surface resistivity distribution in the model. However it is generally difficult to prove that the shallow structures explaining the static distortion obtained by the MT inversion are real features at the scale of the survey. Here we consider additional high resolution geophysical data to overcome this problem. We demonstrate with the help of the results from the recent heliborne TEM survey covering the whole Martinique (marTEM project) that the sub-surface resistivity distribution obtained from 3-D MT inversion reproduces faithfully the resistivity distribution observed by TEM data (Figure 1). Data of two of the three investigated sectors (Anses d'Arlet and Mount Pelée geothermal provinces) are presented because there is a sufficient spatial density of MT soundings. To compare both datasets, TEM data were first homogenized over the investigated area by krigging the resistivity distribution by layer. The median resistivity of this new grid is then extracted above each cell of the MT model and compared to the MT resistivity. Cells that do not contain TEM information or are located too far away from the fly lines are removed from the statistics. The results show that 82% of the cells considered have a maximum resistivity variation below 400% for the Anses d'Arlet prospect and 79 % for the Montagne Pelée. Thus despite a widely different sampling scale between the two sets of data (53 MT soundings,> 20000 TEM for the Mount Pelée and 32 MT soundings, >6200 TEM), the comparison between the two near surface resistivity models illustrates the ability of our inversion scheme to take into account and reproduce static shift effects
