    Defect chemistry of Ti and Fe impurities and aggregates in Al2O3

    We report a theoretical evaluation of the properties of iron and titanium impurities in sapphire (corundum structured α-Al2O3). Calculations using analytical force fields have been performed on the defect structure with the metals present in isolated, co-doped and tri-cluster configurations. Crystal field parameters have been calculated with good agreement to available experimental data. When titanium and iron are present in neighbouring face and edge-sharing orientations, the overlap of the d-orbitals facilitates an intervalence charge transfer (FeIII/TiIII → FeII/TiIV) with an associated optical excitation energy of 1.85 eV and 1.76 eV in the respective configurations. Electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory confirm that FeIII/TiIII is the ground-state configuration for the nearest-neighbour pairs, in contrast to the often considered FeII/TiIV pair. Homonuclear intervalence charge transfer energies between both FeIII/FeII and TiIV/TiIII species have also been calculated, with the energy lying in the infra-red region. Investigation of multiple tri-clusters of iron and titanium identified one stable configuration, TiIII–(TiIV/FeII), with the energy of electron transfer remaining unchanged

    Sex differences in dietary consumption and its association with frailty among middle-aged and older Australians: a 10-year longitudinal survey

    Background Nutritional status has been considered as a key factor in preventing the development of the frailty syndrome. However, sex-specific dietary consumption transition over time and how it impacts of frailty status are unclear. Method We assessed 113,039 adults (aged 50 years and over) from the 45 and Up Study who had completed both baseline (2006–2009) and follow-up (2012–2015) surveys. Dietary consumption was assessed by a short food frequency questionnaire. Frailty was identified by the FRAIL scale. Multinomial regression models were used to examine the association between a long-term dietary consumption and frailty, stratified by sex. Results Of a total of 113,039 participants, females had a higher percentage of pre-frailty and frailty than males (pre-frailty: 35.5% for female and 30.1% for male; frailty: 4.86% for female and 3.56% for male). As age increased, males had significant decreases in overall dietary risk scores, while females had significant increases in overall dietary risk scores. Males and females with a long-term consumption of adequate fruits, high grains or had a variety of foods were related to a low risk of frailty. Females with a long-term consumption of adequate vegetables or high lean meats and poultry were related to a low risk of frailty. Females with an unhealthy diet at both surveys [Relative Risk Ratio (RRR) = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.18; 1.49], and those with unhealthy diet at either surveys (RRR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.12; 1.47, RRR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.04; 1.37) had a higher risk of frailty compared to those had a long-term healthy diet. No association were found between overall dietary risk and frailty for males. Conclusion Males and females changed their dietary consumption as they age. These changes affect its association with frailty, particularly for females. Sex-specific dietary advice in prevention of frailty needs to be further developed

    A transfer-learning approach to feature extraction from cancer transcriptomes with deep autoencoders

    Publicado en Lecture Notes in Computer Science.The diagnosis and prognosis of cancer are among the more challenging tasks that oncology medicine deals with. With the main aim of fitting the more appropriate treatments, current personalized medicine focuses on using data from heterogeneous sources to estimate the evolu- tion of a given disease for the particular case of a certain patient. In recent years, next-generation sequencing data have boosted cancer prediction by supplying gene-expression information that has allowed diverse machine learning algorithms to supply valuable solutions to the problem of cancer subtype classification, which has surely contributed to better estimation of patient’s response to diverse treatments. However, the efficacy of these models is seriously affected by the existing imbalance between the high dimensionality of the gene expression feature sets and the number of sam- ples available for a particular cancer type. To counteract what is known as the curse of dimensionality, feature selection and extraction methods have been traditionally applied to reduce the number of input variables present in gene expression datasets. Although these techniques work by scaling down the input feature space, the prediction performance of tradi- tional machine learning pipelines using these feature reduction strategies remains moderate. In this work, we propose the use of the Pan-Cancer dataset to pre-train deep autoencoder architectures on a subset com- posed of thousands of gene expression samples of very diverse tumor types. The resulting architectures are subsequently fine-tuned on a col- lection of specific breast cancer samples. This transfer-learning approach aims at combining supervised and unsupervised deep learning models with traditional machine learning classification algorithms to tackle the problem of breast tumor intrinsic-subtype classification.Universidad de Málaga.     Tungsten Bronze Barium Neodymium Titanate (Ba 6–3 Nd 8+2 Ti 18 O 54 ): An Intrinsic Nanostructured Material and Its Defect Distribution

    We investigated the structure of the tungsten bronze barium neodymium titanates Ba6–3nNd8+2nTi18O54, which are exploited as microwave dielectric ceramics. They form a complex nanostructure, which resembles a nanofilm with stacking layers of ∼12 Å thickness. The synthesized samples of Ba6–3nNd8+2nTi18O54 (n = 0, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) are characterized by pentagonal and tetragonal columns, where the A cations are distributed in three symmetrically inequivalent sites. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and electron energy loss spectroscopy allowed for quantitative analysis of the site occupancy, which determines the defect distribution. This is corroborated by density functional theory calculations. Pentagonal columns are dominated by Ba, and tetragonal columns are dominated by Nd, although specific Nd sites exhibit significant concentrations of Ba. The data indicated significant elongation of the Ba columns in the pentagonal positions and of the Nd columns in tetragonal positions involving a zigzag arrangement of atoms along the b lattice direction. We found that the preferred Ba substitution occurs at Nd[3]/[4] followed by Nd[2] and Nd[1]/[5] sites, which is significantly different to that proposed in earlier studies. Our results on the Ba6–3nNd8+2nTi18O54 “perovskite” superstructure and its defect distribution are particularly valuable in those applications where the optimization of material properties of oxides is imperative; these include not only microwave ceramics but also thermoelectric materials, where the nanostructure and the distribution of the dopants will reduce the thermal conductivity

    Risk, balanced skills and entrepreneurship

    This paper proposes that risk aversion encourages individuals to invest in balanced skill profiles, making them more likely to become entrepreneurs. By not taking this possible linkage into account, previous research has underestimated the impacts of both risk aversion and balanced skills on the likelihood individuals choose entrepreneurship. Data on Dutch university graduates provide an illustration supporting our contention. We raise the possibility that even risk-averse people might be suited to entrepreneurship; and it may also help explain why prior research has generated somewhat mixed evidence about the effects of risk aversion on selection into entrepreneurship

    Quality of Life Changes Following Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation and Participation in a Mixed-Type, Moderate-intensity, Exercise Program

    Summary:The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of undertaking peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBST) on quality of life (QoL), and to determine the effect of participating in a mixed-type, moderate-intensity exercise program on QoL. It was also an objective to determine the relationship between peak aerobic capacity and QoL in PBST patients. QoL was assessed via the CARES questionnaire and peak aerobic capacity by a maximal graded treadmill test, pretransplant (PI), post transplant (PII) and following a 12-week intervention period (PIII). At PII, 12 patients were divided equally into a control or exercise intervention group. Undergoing a PBST was associated with a statistically but not clinically significant decline in QoL (P<0.05). Following the intervention, exercising patients demonstrated an improved QoL when compared with pretransplant ratings (P<0.01) and nonexercising transplant patients (P<0.05). Moreover, peak aerobic capacity and QoL were correlated (P<0.05). The findings demonstrated that exercise participation following oncology treatment is associated with a reduction in the number and severity of endorsed problems, which in turn leads to improvements in global, physical and psychosocial QoL.     HUNGARIAN EXPERIENCE IN STRUCTURAL DESIGN CODING (HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS OF EUROCODE-2)

    This paper gives review of the historical antecedents of Eurocode-2 in Hungary and East Europe. The method of permissible stresses, using uniform safety factor was first changed in 1950 in Hungary by the semi-probabilistic method using partial safety factors. This new method was accepted with some resistance on the part of the leading structural engineers. Nevertheless most of the East-European countries accepted the new method with some political overtones', to be follow the Soviet example. The authors assert in the papaer that due to the economic necessities. Hungary and the other East European countries gained experience with the regulations affording less safety than the EC2, and this offers an interesting set of experience to the West European countries which have intoduced or are introducing the semi-probabilistic procedure. The most significant point all the experience is the recognition that only one part of the parameters in the structural analysis determining safety can be handled statistically. During design the statistically not significant data such as the error of the structural model must also be taken into consideration.
