An inelastic neutron scattering investigation of the temporal behaviour of the hydrocarbonaceous overlayer of a prototype Fischer-Tropsch to olefins catalyst

The Royal Society is thanked for the provision of an Industry Fellowship (PBW).A dual sodium and sulfur promoted haematite, representative of a candidate Fischer-Tropsch to olefins (FTO) catalyst, is prepared and contrasted with the performance of an unpromoted hematite sample in the ambient pressure CO hydrogenation reaction at 623 K as a function of time-on-stream (0–24 h). In-situ post-reaction temperature-programmed oxidation measurements show the carbon evolutionary phase of the catalyst conditioning process to be retarded for the FTO catalyst. Ex-situ inelastic neutron scattering measurements show the promoters perturb the formation of a previously described hydrocarbonaceous overlayer. Specifically, whilst the sp3 hybridised C–H modes of the hydrocarbonaceous overlayer are almost unaffected by the additives, the formation of the overlayer’s sp2 hybridised C–H modes are noticeably impeded. The results are discussed in terms of the Na/S promoters disturbing the formation of an ordered hydrocarbonaceous overlayer that is thought to constrain the supply of adsorbed hydrogen atoms, which favours the formation of unsaturated hydrocarbons associated with the FTO process.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Population divergence in nutrient-temperature interactions in Pieris rapae
The interaction between larval host plant quality and temperature can influence the short-term physiological rates and life-history traits of insect herbivores. These factors can vary locally, resulting in local adaptation in responses to diet and temperature, but the comparison of these interactions between populations is infrequently carried out. In this study, we examine how the macronutrient ratio of an artificial diet determines the larval growth, development, and survival of larval Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) at different temperatures between two invasive North American populations from different climatic regions. We conducted a fully factorial experiment with three temperature treatments (18°C, 25°C, and 32°C) and three artificial diet treatments varying in terms of the ratio of protein to carbohydrate (low protein, balanced, and high protein). The effects of diet on life-history traits were greater at lower temperatures, but these differed between populations. Larvae from the subtropical population had reduced survival to pupation on the low-protein diet in the cold temperature treatment, whereas larval survival for the temperate population was equally high for all temperature and diet treatments. Overall, both populations performed more poorly (i.e., they showed slower rates of consumption, growth, and development, and had a smaller pupal mass) in the diet with the low protein ratio, but larvae from the temperate population were less sensitive to diet ratio changes at all temperatures. Our results confirm that the physiological and life-history consequences of imbalanced nutrition for insect herbivores may depend on developmental temperatures, and that different geographic populations of P. rapae within North America vary in their sensitivity to nutritional balance and temperature
Explicit asymptotic modelling of transient Love waves propagated along a thin coating
The official published version can be obtained from the link below.An explicit asymptotic model for transient Love waves is derived from the exact equations of anti-plane elasticity. The perturbation procedure relies upon the slow decay of low-frequency Love waves to approximate the displacement field in the substrate by a power series in the depth coordinate. When appropriate decay conditions are imposed on the series, one obtains a model equation governing the displacement at the interface between the coating and the substrate. Unusually, the model equation contains a term with a pseudo-differential operator. This result is confirmed and interpreted by analysing the exact solution obtained by integral transforms. A comparison of fragmenting lead-based and lead-free bullets for aerial shooting of wild pigs
In response to the health threats posed by toxic lead to humans, scavenging wildlife and the environment, there is currently a focus on transitioning from lead-based to lead-free bullets for shooting of wild animals. We compared efficiency metrics and terminal ballistic performance for lead-based and lead-free (non-lead) bullets for aerial shooting of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) in eastern Australia. Ballistic testing revealed that lead-based and lead-free bullets achieved similar performance in precision and muzzle kinetic energy (E-0) levels (3337.2 J and 3345.7 J, respectively). An aerial shooting trial was conducted with wild pigs shot with one type of lead-based and one type of lead-free bullets under identical conditions. Observations were made from 859 shooting events (n = 430 and 429 respectively), with a sub-set of pigs examined via gross post-mortem (n = 100 and 108 respectively), and a further sub-set examined via radiography (n = 94 and 101 respectively). The mean number of bullets fired per pig killed did not differ greatly between lead-based and lead-free bullets respectively (4.09 vs 3.91), nor did the mean number of bullet wound tracts in each animal via post-mortem inspection (3.29 vs 2.98). However, radiography revealed a higher average number of fragments per animal (median >300 vs median = 55) and a broader distribution of fragments with lead-based bullets. Our results suggest that lead-based and lead-free bullets are similarly effective for aerial shooting of wild pigs, but that the bullet types behave differently, with lead-based bullets displaying a higher degree of fragmentation. These results suggest that aerial shooting may be a particularly important contributor to scavenging wildlife being exposed to lead and that investigation of lead-free bullets for this use should continue
Particle creation, classicality and related issues in quantum field theory: II. Examples from field theory
We adopt the general formalism, which was developed in Paper I
(arXiv:0708.1233) to analyze the evolution of a quantized time-dependent
oscillator, to address several questions in the context of quantum field theory
in time dependent external backgrounds. In particular, we study the question of
emergence of classicality in terms of the phase space evolution and its
relation to particle production, and clarify some conceptual issues. We
consider a quantized scalar field evolving in a constant electric field and in
FRW spacetimes which illustrate the two extreme cases of late time adiabatic
and highly non-adiabatic evolution. Using the time-dependent generalizations of
various quantities like particle number density, effective Lagrangian etc.
introduced in Paper I, we contrast the evolution in these two limits bringing
out key differences between the Schwinger effect and evolution in the de Sitter
background. Further, our examples suggest that the notion of classicality is
multifaceted and any one single criterion may not have universal applicability.
For example, the peaking of the phase space Wigner distribution on the
classical trajectory \emph{alone} does not imply transition to classical
behavior. An analysis of the behavior of the \emph{classicality parameter},
which was introduced in Paper I, leads to the conclusion that strong particle
production is necessary for the quantum state to become highly correlated in

Separation of breast cancer and organ microenvironment transcriptomes in metastases
Background: The seed and soil hypothesis was proposed over a century ago to describe why cancer cells (seeds) grow in certain organs (soil). Since then, the genetic properties that define the cancer cells have been heavily investigated; however, genomic mediators within the organ microenvironment that mediate successful metastatic growth are less understood. These studies sought to identify cancer- and organ-specific genomic programs that mediate metastasis. Methods: In these studies, a set of 14 human breast cancer patient-derived xenograft (PDX) metastasis models was developed and then tested for metastatic tropism with two approaches: spontaneous metastases from mammary tumors and intravenous injection of PDX cells. The transcriptomes of the cancer cells when growing as tumors or metastases were separated from the transcriptomes of the microenvironment via species-specific separation of the genomes. Drug treatment of PDX spheroids was performed to determine if genes activated in metastases may identify targetable mediators of viability. Results: The experimental approaches that generated metastases in PDX models were identified. RNA sequencing of 134 tumors, metastases, and normal non-metastatic organs identified cancer- and organ-specific genomic properties that mediated metastasis. A common genomic response of the liver microenvironment was found to occur in reaction to the invading PDX cells. Genes within the cancer cells were found to be either transiently regulated by the microenvironment or permanently altered due to clonal selection of metastatic sublines. Gene Set Enrichment Analyses identified more than 400 gene signatures that were commonly activated in metastases across basal-like PDXs. A Src signaling signature was found to be extensively upregulated in metastases, and Src inhibitors were found to be cytotoxic to PDX spheroids. Conclusions: These studies identified that during the growth of breast cancer metastases, there were genomic changes that occurred within both the cancer cells and the organ microenvironment. We hypothesize that pathways upregulated in metastases are mediators of viability and that simultaneously targeting changes within different cancer cell pathways and/or different tissue compartments may be needed for inhibition of disease progression
Particle creation, classicality and related issues in quantum field theory: I. Formalism and toy models
The quantum theory of a harmonic oscillator with a time dependent frequency
arises in several important physical problems, especially in the study of
quantum field theory in an external background. While the mathematics of this
system is straightforward, several conceptual issues arise in such a study. We
present a general formalism to address some of the conceptual issues like the
emergence of classicality, definition of particle content, back reaction etc.
In particular, we parametrize the wave function in terms of a complex number
(which we call excitation parameter) and express all physically relevant
quantities in terms it. Many of the notions -- like those of particle number
density, effective Lagrangian etc., which are usually defined using asymptotic
in-out states -- are generalized as time-dependent concepts and we show that
these generalized definitions lead to useful and reasonable results. Having
developed the general formalism we apply it to several examples. Exact analytic
expressions are found for a particular toy model and approximate analytic
solutions are obtained in the extreme cases of adiabatic and highly
non-adiabatic evolution. We then work out the exact results numerically for a
variety of models and compare them with the analytic results and
approximations. The formalism is useful in addressing the question of emergence
of classicality of the quantum state, its relation to particle production and
to clarify several conceptual issues related to this. In Paper II
(arXiv:0708.1237), which is a sequel to this, the formalism will be applied to
analyze the corresponding issues in the context of quantum field theory in
