A new characterization of Talagrand's transport-entropy inequalities and applications
We show that Talagrand's transport inequality is equivalent to a restricted
logarithmic Sobolev inequality. This result clarifies the links between these
two important functional inequalities. As an application, we give the first
proof of the fact that Talagrand's inequality is stable under bounded

The HH34 outflow as seen in [FeII]1.64um by LBT-LUCI
Dense atomic jets from young stars copiously emit in [FeII] IR lines, which
can, therefore, be used to trace the immediate environments of embedded
protostars. We want to investigate the morphology of the bright [FeII] 1.64um
line in the jet of the source HH34 IRS and compare it with the most commonly
used optical tracer [SII]. We analyse a 1.64um narrow-band filter image
obtained with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) LUCI instrument, which covers
the HH34 jet and counterjet. A Point Spread Function (PSF) deconvolution
algorithm was applied to enhance spatial resolution and make the IR image
directly comparable to a [SII] HST image of the same source. The [FeII]
emission is detected from both the jet, the (weak) counter-jet, and from the
HH34-S and HH34-N bow shocks. The deconvolved image allows us to resolve jet
knots close to about 1\arcsec from the central source. The morphology of the
[FeII] emission is remarkably similar to that of the [SII] emission, and the
relative positions of [FeII] and [SII] peaks are shifted according to proper
motion measurements, which were previously derived from HST images. An analysis
of the [FeII]/[SII] emission ratio shows that Fe gas abundance is much lower
than the solar value with up to 90% of Fe depletion in the inner jet knots.
This confirms previous findings on dusty jets, where shocks are not efficient

Optimized quantum nondemolition measurement of a field quadrature
We suggest an interferometric scheme assisted by squeezing and linear
feedback to realize the whole class of field-quadrature quantum nondemolition
measurements, from Von Neumann projective measurement to fully non-destructive
non-informative one. In our setup, the signal under investigation is mixed with
a squeezed probe in an interferometer and, at the output, one of the two modes
is revealed through homodyne detection. The second beam is then
amplitude-modulated according to the outcome of the measurement, and finally
squeezed according to the transmittivity of the interferometer. Using strongly
squeezed or anti-squeezed probes respectively, one achieves either a projective
measurement, i.e. homodyne statistics arbitrarily close to the intrinsic
quadrature distribution of the signal, and conditional outputs approaching the
corresponding eigenstates, or fully non-destructive one, characterized by an
almost uniform homodyne statistics, and by an output state arbitrarily close to
the input signal. By varying the squeezing between these two extremes, or
simply by tuning the internal phase-shift of the interferometer, the whole set
of intermediate cases can also be obtained. In particular, an optimal quantum
nondemolition measurement of quadrature can be achieved, which minimizes the
information gain versus state disturbance trade-off

A study on PDC drill bits quality
The quality of innovating PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) bits materials needs to be determined with accuracy by measuring cutting efficiency and wear rate, both related to the overall mechanical properties. An original approach is developed to encompass cutting efficiency and wear contribution to the overall sample quality. Therefore, a lathe-type test device was used to abrade specific samples from various manufacturers. Post-experiment analyzes are based on models establishing coupled relationships between cutting and friction stresses related to the drag bits excavation mechanism. These models are implemented in order to evaluate cutting efficiency and to estimate wear of the diamond insert. Phase analysis by XRD and finite element simulations were performed to explain the role of physicochemical parameters on the calculated quality factor values. Four main properties of PDC material were studied to explain quality results obtained in this study: cobalt content in samples that characterizes hardness/fracture toughness compromise, undesired phase as tungsten carbide weakening diamond structure, diamond grains sizes and residual stresses distribution affecting abrasion resistance
Advancing the link between ocean connectivity, ecological function and management challenges
Ocean connectivity is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field of research in marine science, partly because there is an increasing demand for information on connectivity that informs effective assessment and management of marine resources. Achieving this will require a better alignment between ocean connectivity tools and developments and the needs and challenges of assessments and conservation. For these reasons, the ICES Journal of Marine Science solicited contributions to the article theme set (TS), Beyond ocean connectivity. We briefly summarize the nine articles that appear herein, grouping them into four general topics: methodological advances, population dynamics and assessment implications of connectivity, spatial and management implications, and connectivity in ecosystem processes. We also discuss the challenges facing ocean connectivity research if it is to effectively support advancing fisheries assessment frameworks and integrated ecosystem approaches. We hope that the contributions included in this TS serve to convince managers and fisheries scientists of the need to incorporate results from research on connectivity

Strategies for Territorial Peace: The Overcoming of the Structural Violence in Women Living in Palmira, Colombia
Women experience different types of violence, and poverty is one of them. The aim of this work was to show the situation of poverty experienced by women in Palmira and how this condition affects both their participation in and contribution to the achievement of territorial peace—a central political target in our country. For this, a descriptive and predictive study was carried out by applying a survey to measure the different types of violence affecting Palmirana women. The results demonstrate the predominance of structural violence suffered by women, which creates unfavorable conditions for the construction of peace in Colombia
