A VLA Study of Newly-Discovered Southern Latitude Non-Thermal Filaments in the Galactic Center: Radio Continuum Total-intensity and Spectral Index Properties
The non-thermal filament (NTF) radio structures clustered within a few
hundred parsecs of the Galactic Center (GC) are apparently unique to this
region of the Galaxy. Recent radio images of the GC using MeerKAT at 1 GHz have
revealed a multitude of faint, previously unknown NTF bundles (NTFBs), some of
which are comprised of as many as 10 or more individual filaments. In this work
we present Very Large Array (VLA) observations at C- and X-bands (4 - 12 GHz)
at arcsecond-scale resolutions of three of these newly-discovered NTFBs, all
located at southern Galactic latitudes. These observations allow us to compare
their total-intensity properties with those of the larger NTF population. We
find that these targets generally possess properties similar to what is
observed in the larger NTF population. However, the larger NTF population
generally has steeper spectral index values than what we observe for our chosen
targets. The results presented here based on the total-intensity properties of
these structures indicate that the NTFs are likely all formed from Cosmic Rays
(CRs). These CRs are either generated by a nearby compact source and then
diffuse along the NTF lengths or are generated by extended, magnetized
structures whose magnetic field undergoes reconnection with the NTF magnetic

Identity Performance, Gender and Social Media: College Students and Facebook
As social networking sites (SNSs) have become the dominant form of communication
among internet users, the presentation of identity has become key in creating and maintaining
relationships online. To understand the motivations behind the performance of virtual
identities, this research study inquires how identity is constructed and performed on Facebook.
College students are amongst the most avid users of Facebook, and thus the study focuses on
their performance of identity. This study is unique in that it works to understand how college
seniors intend to be perceived during their transition from college to the professional world. A
qualitative study of their performance of identity during this period of time presented
opportunities to understand issues of authenticity online and professional uses of Facebook.
This study looked at the performance of identity through the lens of gender, and found
that in fact males and females do exhibit some different behaviors when performing their
desired identity. However, across both genders in their senior year college seniors were most
motivated and concerned about performing for potential employers. This study indicated that
performance of identity existed for both males and females throughout their college
experience, although in many ways the performance changed due to a difference in audience

Multi-band Superconductivity in the Chevrel Phases SnMo6S8 and PbMo6S8
Sub-Kelvin scanning tunnelling spectroscopy in the Chevrel Phases SnMo6S8 and
PbMo6S8 reveals two distinct superconducting gaps with Delta_1 = 3 meV, Delta_2
~ 1.0 meV and Delta_1 = 3.1 meV, Delta_2 ~ 1.4 meV respectively. The gap
distribution is strongly anisotropic, with Delta_2 predominantly seen when
scanning across unit-cell steps on the (001) sample surface. The spectra are
well-fitted by an anisotropic two-band BCS s-wave gap function. Our
spectroscopic data are confirmed by electronic heat capacity measurements which
also provide evidence for a twin-gap scenario.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Novel Association of HK1 with Glycated Hemoglobin in a Non-Diabetic Population: A Genome-Wide Evaluation of 14,618 Participants in the Women's Genome Health Study
Type 2 diabetes is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. While genetic variants have been found to influence the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, relatively few studies have focused on genes associated with glycated hemoglobin, an index of the mean blood glucose concentration of the preceding 8–12 weeks. Epidemiologic studies and randomized clinical trials have documented the relationship between glycated hemoglobin levels and the development of long-term complications in diabetes; moreover, higher glycated hemoglobin levels in the subdiabetic range have been shown to predict type 2 diabetes risk and cardiovascular disease. To examine the common genetic determinants of glycated hemoglobin levels, we performed a genome-wide association study that evaluated 337,343 SNPs in 14,618 apparently healthy Caucasian women. The results show that glycated hemoglobin levels are associated with genetic variation at the GCK (rs730497; P = 2.8×10−12), SLC30A8 (rs13266634; P = 9.8×10−8), G6PC2 (rs1402837; P = 6.8×10−10), and HK1 (rs7072268; P = 6.4×10−9) loci. While associations at the GCK, SLC30A8, and G6PC2 loci are confirmatory, the findings at HK1 are novel. We were able to replicate this novel association in an independent validation sample of 455 additional non-diabetic men and women. HK1 encodes the enzyme hexokinase, the first step in glycolysis and a likely candidate for the control of glucose metabolism. This observed genetic association between glycated hemoglobin levels and HK1 polymorphisms paves the way for further studies of the role of HK1 in hemoglobin glycation, glucose metabolism, and diabetes

Maroussia Paré, high level athlete in track and field and psychologist, propounds in this article an analysis of her 2020–2021 Olympic season. From the beginning of the preparation with setting goals, through the failures and the unpleasant emotions, she comes back on the little-known daily life of the athletes who, at the moment of a race, hope to shine with their results. This interview highlights the psychological resources adopted by athletes such as adaptive capacities, self-control and privileged coping strategies. We can see from her experience that this mad rush for performance, both individual and collective, can also lead to significant psychological vulnerabilities.Thus, between prevention and support, the place of the psychologist within the staff of the athlete seems necessary
Oscillating tails of dispersion-managed soliton
Oscillating tails of dispersion-managed optical fiber system are studied for
strong dispersion map in the framework of path-averaged Gabitov-Turitsyn
equation. The small parameter of the analytical theory is the inverse time. An
exponential decay in time of soliton tails envelope is consistent with nonlocal
nonlinearity of Gabitov-Turitsyn equation, and the fast oscillations are
described by a quadratic law. The pre-exponential modification factor is the
linear function of time for zero average dispersion and cubic function for

A VLA Polarimetric Study of the Galactic Center Radio Arc: Characterizing Polarization, Rotation Measure, and Magnetic Field Properties
The Radio Arc is one of the brightest systems of non-thermal filaments (NTFs)
in the Galactic Center, located near several prominent HII regions (Sickle and
Pistol) and the Quintuplet stellar cluster. We present observations of the Arc
NTFs using the S-, C-, and X-bands of the Very Large Array interferometer. Our
images of total intensity reveal large-scale helical features that surround the
Arc NTFs, very narrow sub-filamentation, and compact sources along the NTFs.
The distribution of polarized intensity is confined to a relatively small area
along the NTFs. There are elongated polarized structures that appear to lack
total intensity counterparts. We detect a range of rotation measure values from
-1000 to -5800 rad m, likely caused by external Faraday rotation
along the line of sight. After correcting for Faraday rotation, the intrinsic
magnetic field orientation is found to generally trace the extent of the NTFs.
However, the intrinsic magnetic field in several regions of the Arc NTFs shows
an ordered pattern that is rotated with respect to the extent of the NTFs. We
suggest this changing pattern may be caused by an additional magnetized source
along the line of sight, so that we observe two field systems superposed in our
observations. We suggest that the large scale helical segments near the Radio
Arc could be components of such a source causing these changes in intrinsic
magnetic field, and some variations in the polarization and rotation measure
