Student genres such as the monograph prepare students for research writing and introduce
them to academic expert communicative practices in humanities. Many professors of the Letters
degree (Literature and Linguistics) of the University of Buenos Aires elaborate unpublished writing
guidelines, which provide academic writing advice and details to aid this process. However,
these guidelines have not been characterized as genres yet. This is why we carried out a qualitative
and quantitative analysis of the 22 monograph writing guidelines that we found belonging to this
degree. The results of the quantitative analysis revealed that a significant percentage (69%) of the
courses in this degree provide its students with writing guidelines and that they can be found either
in the university photocopy shop or the online Virtual Campus. On the other hand, our qualitative
analysis showed that there is no unanimity among the courses on the textual organization or the
linguistic aspects that they address on their writing guidelines. Moreover, we were able to
identify the most frequent discursive operations demanded to the students and, as a result, we were
able to identify disciplinary differences between the writing guidelines of Linguistics and Literature
courses.Fil: Pappolla, Antonella. Universidad de Buenos Aires; Argentina.Fil: Santoro, Marina. Universidad de Buenos Aires; Argentina
